I went to a brick and mortar store last Friday for Lulu... I ended up getting a top (it's a bit long but I like the fit everywhere else..I just have to tug it down every time it rides up but it's not too big a deal. Nothing I've not encountered before). It's a final sale one and I just really got it for a test in quality. It's... all right I guess. What primarily bothers me is the fit (well of course) and the fact that the seams don't look like they're done very well (the fabric keeps bunching up on them if it's not pulled down all the way). Either of which way, going to see if it'll last.

The pants though are a different story. I never liked long pants but I got this one pair (the track ones) in store because heck, it was the only pair that really fit me and didn't make me look like a sausage. And while I really liked the fabric, it's still too long in the hip area (it works out because the legs end in an elastic that I think will wear out eventually) and I still don't like working out in anything that isn't shorts. (Not to mention because of the different fabrics I would fit a 4 here, a 6 here, and even an 8 in another. Camel toes, bunching up, and whatnot are such a problem for me for some reason...) And I'm not comfortable showing my thighs so I'm probably going to return these pants this Friday and going somewhere else.

I'll keep Lycra in mind! Nice to know it doesn't wear out too much.

I have some C9s from Target that I use for shorts, still am using them, but sometimes I want something a bit cuter and flattering just to motivate myself to work out more (hey if I look good now, how much better will I look later? XD) And the Targets I go to well.. They're not very well stocked on exercise gear and the ones they carry are too garish or aren't well made :c I'll check again Friday when I go to return my pants to Lulu.

I've never heard of Lucy, Sue, but I'll check that out. Maybe there's a store here in the city that sells them and I never figured it out... Athleta I've heard about and if the quality is good I wouldn't mind investing. But I'm not sure how to return the stuff if I want to (it looks like to be in line with Gap too... I wonder if the stuff is preshrunk now because I know Gap clothes and jeans have horrid shrinking problems).

And also thanks for the support guys. I really appreciate it! :)
Carol, when I was first starting my own fitness journey 2 years ago, I bought my workout clothes at Target. Perfectly fine. AND since it was also a weight loss journey, I didn't mind so much putting those clothes in the donate pile after a year or so. All the pants and shirts I bought at Target fit me just fine - again, I'm 5'2". Good luck!!

Remember, black Lycra doesn't wear out! I've got lots of ancient black bottoms. Put colour on the top with bright t's or tank tops with built in support. Get good sports bras!

Try bricks and mortar department stores, and sports stores. I've located high end gear in 'designer discount' places.

Good lock with your new fitness regime.

Hi Carol,

I wear Althleta, Lulu and Lucy. I like Lucy because they always have great sales and their workout wear is nice quality. I like Athleta because they have cute stuff, alter free alterations and the quality is there. I like Lulu because their stuff lasts a long time and is really cute. Others have had good luck at Target and Old Navy. Since you are starting out, I would suggest Target, Old Navy, etc to see what you like. Once you have figured that out, I would splurge on the high end clothes. I workout everyday, teach bodypump, run, spin, do interval training, etc. so may clothes get used a lot.
I was hoping it wasn't Lulu D: They're really expensive for me >.< Wonder if they have student discounts.... (I know they have a "we made too much section" but I was reading the reviews from those articles of clothing and they seem to be cheapening out the fabric).

I wouldn't mind if they never wear out though (or wear out in like 3 years lol). I'll see if I can find a brick and mortar store to go to tomorrow in the city after work.
I highly recommend Lululemon. I thought it was overpriced stuff but the quality is there. The pants suck you in and you look nice and trim. My feeling is if you look nice, you might work out more often. ;-)

I'm 5'2" and pants and shirts fit me with no problem. Pants are a bit longer on me - but that's just fine. Good luck!!

ETA: BTW, I wash in cold water, and hang to dry.
I'm starting a new gym regimen (yay for me!) but I'm in dire need of more attire now that I'm going much more frequently. Does anyone have a good place to hunt some cute gear? I've looked at places like athleta.com and fitcouture but I'm not very sure of their quality..
