Re ZoeyGirl & Peri -many mall brands have dates on their care tag. 2 examples, ones from the Gap and ones from JCrew. Also, some brands have disappeared so you can date from that. (The Limited for example closed in 2017, so it’s possible this store was using that to make there decision). And i know that were i sell, some of the staff, but not all, are just super knowledgeable about what and where something was sold…

I suppose that’s fair enough Peri, perhaps I shouldn’t have been angry. I suppose if they’ve had their store for any length of time they have a feel for what may sell and what may not. It just made me feel really bad the way they dealt with me, not pleasant. I had taken good brands all clean and well presented, some of the shoes hardly worn. I donated them to Dress for Success in the end.

ZoeyGirl, I don't know! I guess they are knowledgeable enough on the clothes from the stores they generally accept to know when things came out. It was interesting...she took almost everything Talbots, J Crew and J Jill and a few things WHBM. The one Limited pair of pants I had she said "we don't carry things from the Limited". I didn't ask why.

But, nothing of mine was that new so who knows. I asked her how she decided and she just said basically it was whatever she felt might sell.

As far as the rule, yes, pretty strict. It's okay. I won't get much but I donate a lot too and don't get anything from that.

I had what I felt was the most horrible experience with a consignment store in 2019 where they had very strict rules that I swore off ever going there again. I did manage to sell a beautiful 1988 silk skirt at a different vintage one but didn’t get much money. In that case I just hoped that the new owner might love the skirt as I had since she paid good money for it- I had given information on its year of purchase and where (Singapore), and that it was real Thai silk.
Happy to hear you had a better experience!

Awesome that you had a good experience! Question - how would the store be able to tell how old it is anyway?

Glad it went well! Basically what Rachy says - what any given consignment shop takes reflects what they think will sell to their particular clientele. It is not a judgment on your clothes per se.

Well...that went better than I thought! She took 20 items out of the 32...I had been thinking 10 would be doing well. Now just the waiting and tracking what sells.

I'm glad it turned out well so far. I hope the things sell but really I find it kind of fun to see what does. I don't expect to earn back anything more than pennies on the dollar but that doesn't make me feel bad...I got use out of the things so anything coming back is gravy.

I do what joy does - I just go down the road to another second hand store - they usually take 1/2 what the first didnt. then I drop off at Salvation Army/good will.

in season is always better. but that doesnt always go for designer brands -

Each consignment shop is a little different. The one I try first is. Dry picky about condition and likes things to be dry cleaned. If they have lots of black pants, etc. already they will reject any you bring in. No pet hairs or strong scents, including fabric softeners. Basically like-new condition. Many will say they want something bought in the last couple of years, but ignore that. I see brands in those places that have been out of business for years.
If the picky one does not take things, I try them again at a different store. Things in season are the best.

if they are designer or designer adjacent, try the realreal. they may not take much, but you can do it without leaving your couch.

I worked consignment. I don’t know that there’s anything special one can do except clean and neat (altho lots just bring in a pile). Condition and currentness isn’t the only thing - the buyer is shopping for the store’s clientele. I’ve had designer pieces I couldn’t sell because they were too unconventional for my neighbourhood of professionals. Goodwill was a better bet, ‘cuz artists and young people.

Wow, I’m doomed then! Two years is brand new to me!

On the plus side, I guess I’m not doing constant closet churn. These things are way past that mark.

The shops near me only take things within 2 years, even if the things look current. They take 50%, so for me I may as well donate and write it off.
That said- I do appreciate the people that consign nice things in my size

I've done a long overdue Fall/Winter closet clean out and I'm taking 34 items to a consignment store appointment tomorrow. I've done this a few times in the past with this store and had a decent experience, but I don't expect her to take more than about 1/3 of it.

I'm not emotionally attached to having her take the things...I figure it's a learning experience for me. I tend to hang onto things too long so my attitude is that anything she thinks no one will buy even at consignment prices is too worn or dated for me to be wearing either. Those things will be dropped off at a donations store on the way home.

To give them the best chance though, I've:

Hung everything on matching hangers.

Steamed out all the wrinkles in sweaters that were stored folded.

Taken a close look at everything to make sure I didn't miss anything like a stain or tear.

Any other advice for making these things look tempting and well presented?

Thanks!
