I'm guilty of all of the above, but the Stitch Witchery which just takes an iron would be the best choice short of sewing them by hand. The fashion tape is expensive and needs to be removed before washing or you will end up with sticky spots in your dryer. Duct tape might go through the washer but can also be a mess and leave sticky residue on the fabric.

I use the Hollywood Fashion Tape that carambola linked to. It comes in a few different formats including a roll that you can cut, out of which I made a tangled mess. I'm inept with needle and thread, and not much better with glue or tape so I order the little tins from Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/FOUR-PAC.....038;sr=1-1 (sorry, don't know how to add link more neatly on iPad).

When I can't get to a tailor in time, I've used this on Theory wool trousers, EF silk and ponte, and Zara linen. The Zara linen fake hems are still going strong 2 summers in -- somehow have survived dry cleaning!

Thistle, just ask for fusible hem tape or fusible tape at a fabric store. (It's iron-on tape that is sticky on both sides; Stitch Witchery is one kind.) I don't think the brand matters all that much. It will probably last long enough for your purposes, but if it doesn't last through multiple washings, you can always redo it.

I do my hems by hand; usually I don't need to hem so much so I just fold it in and tack down with a whip stitch (for lighter fabrics) or back stitch (for jeans, or other hems with visible stitching). In a pinch, you can use stitch witchery (get it at joanns or similar stores) but like others have said it doesn't last through many washes.

I do some hems by hand using a running stitch--if the amount and fabric type works out right, I can somtimes just turn it under with the existing hem still in place. Won't work with strong taper or flare, of course, due to puckering or bunching. You do have to measure, pin, hem and press. The fabric needs to allow for you to "pick up" and inside thread without coming through to the "good side" where the stitch would be visible.

There is a product I got for my daughter that is for re-positionable temporary "hemming of jeans" --special tapes, probably at 4 points per pant leg. You could check fabric stores.

Ha, Gaylene - I was about to suggest a stapler! It was how I got through years of Catholic school uniforms with pleated skirts. Sorry Thistle. I always turned to Grandma when I needed real sewing. I will be no help here. Good luck!!!

Well, my husband once used a stapler to staple up the hem of a pair of pants, but I wouldn't recommend that.

If you didn't want to use a needle and thread like Liz suggests, then I'd go to your nearest fabric or craft store and ask for the fusible web tape that Carter has linked to in her reply. It's super simple to use because you just fold up the hem to wherever you want (and I wouldn't even bother removing the old hem unless you have enough turnover to cut it off), sandwich the tape between the two pieces of fabric positioning just beneath the top edge away from the fold, and then use a hot iron with a press cloth so the tape melts and fuses the fabric together. If you don't want even bother with an iron, you could also use dots of fabric glue to hold the turned under fabric in place--just be careful if the fabric is very lightweight because the spots of glue can show through on some fabrics.

Actually, my quick and dirty method for hemming a pair of casual pants that only need to be shortened an inch or two is to just fold under the original hem and then quickly stitch it in place either with my sewing machine or by hand. with a needle and thread. It makes the hem a bit thicker but I've found that actually helps some pants drape a bit better.

ETA: It's true that the fusible web won't last through repeated laundering, but you'll have more than enough in the roll to do a quick fix if the hem starts to fall down--and maternity pants usually aren't worn forever!

Yep, I use stitch witchery in a pinch, too.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb.....20on%20hem

But... It will wash out, so it's not a good long term fix. If I pin my hems myself, my drycleaner will hem and return next day. I wouldn't trust my drycleaner with other alterations, but hems are fine. You may have an option like this that is faster than your usual tailor.

In the UK we have Wundaweb. You iron it on in between the inside of the hem and the inside of the pants. Here's and example : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like.....038;lpid=1

Actually, there is no need for a sewing machine or special sewing skils for this. All you need is a seam ripper or pair of small scissors to rip out the old hem, a ruler, some pins, and a needle and thread. I'm sure there is a how-to video somewhere out there on the internet that will show you how to sew a hem stitch.

Take out the old hem, use an iron to steam the bottom flat. Measure and turn up the hem to the new length (pin it), and then stitch away.

I do not know how to operate a sewing machine.

However, I have a pair of ankle maternity pants that could use some hemming. I have maybe another 6 weeks of summer in which to wear these pants, at which point it will be too cold. They will then be donated as we are planning to be done with our family.

It will take me 3-4 weeks to get these back from the tailor, so I am wondering if there are any easy cheats for a non-permanent pair of pants.
