Oh, Joyce. What a sweet and precious boy Simba is. He's so lucky to have your enormous care and love - which he has given to you all these years. Beautifully reciprocal, and heart warming. Much love and hang in there. I get how stressful this is. xo

Yesterday the nephrologist gave him a feeding tube to let his tongue heal from painful lesions that developed and made eating very difficult. He also switched his subcutaneous fluids and meds. He thinks Simba had an acute kidney injury and a background mild renal failure.
He had the tube placed yesterday.
Now I am nursing him hopefully back to good health, with tube feedings and subcutaneous fluids.
Thank you Angie and all for your support.

Joyce, I hope the nephrologist is able to help. You can totally do the subcue fluids. My sister did that with her dog and I did it for a guinea pig a million years ago. Those guinea pigs have tough skin.

Hope you're getting some good news on the pup. Mine almost died of liver failure a few years ago, and after heavy nursing and special diet is still pootling around at 13.

(He gave himself pancreatitis once, too, by eating crap he found in the street and would not drop.)

Joyce, Bob Barker did that once - he gobbled down a dead mouse he found in the gutter. I couldn’t get it away. I thought about why a dead mouse was laying in the gutter and thought it might have been poisoned. I hurried over to the vet and they made him vomit it up. I don’t know if it was poisoned, but the vet thought it was a good possibility.

Angie, thanks for asking. He has an acute renal injury superimposed on a baseline mild renal failure. He ate something in the street that he totally refused letting me take out of his mouth, he clasped so tight. And then he got very sick. The vet had no hope for him. He is still on IV fluids and his lab values, although abnormal, are going down. Yesterday he was feeling better, wagged his tail for us and ate the grilled chicken I made for him, though he is very sad at the hospital. He has lost a lot of weight. We were able to get a vet nephrologist to see him next monday. I am praying that we will have more time together.

Thank you very much, Tina and everyone for your support.
Tina, thank you for sharing your experience. You have been through a lot. I wish you continued good health and many blessings.
I am looking for low potassium foods, I always avoid sodium so that is easy.
I will keep in mind the treatment to prevent anemia.

I have no advice on pets with kidney failure but if it is anything like human kidney failure I have lots of experience. I have been through it twice, my second transplant is 18 years old.
I lived with very low function for a number of years before my second transplant, extreme fatigue and high urea were my main issues (the urea made me lose my appetite). One thing that can help is to really restrict any foods that are high in potassium and sodium. Trying to keep hemoglobin stable was tough because of the role the kidneys play, there was a shot we could get that would boost hemoglobin- not sure if that is available for dogs.
Hopefully you can at least get your pup to the point where it can rest comfortably and you know they are not feeling terrible. Unfortunately, with time there is no help outside of dialysis.
