I missed the original post, but if you've experienced anything like an anxiety/panic attack, I sympathize. My mom was very susceptible to them.

I've gone through it twice -- both times under extreme stress, almost exactly like what Barbara Diane described. The first was when my dad died, and the second occurred when my mom was in the ICU in her final weeks. I literally thought I was having a heart attack and would end up in the ICU next to her. A nurse helped me through it.

Hugs to you. I hope everything is OK. PM me if you need to talk!

I think it's St Teresa of Avila, but don't quote me on that. She called those little twinges of almost imperceptible feeling 'alligators.' I think it was her. Pema does a better job of describing what to look for.

Oh and btw who is St Teresa? I wasn't sure if you were being literal or not (suffice it to say, I am NOT Catholic).

Thanks, texstyle. I'm already sure I'm deficient in b12 and probably other things are out of balance. Definitely low-iron. I'm not a huge caffeine drinker, but I'm pretty sensitive.

rachy, I have one of Pema's books I bought over a year ago. I have to read it! Of course, I have trouble focusing Thanks for reminding me, though.

I wonder if most anxiety isn't mostly nutritional deficiencies showing themselves. Low iron, thyroid issues, low B12 and low magnesium and other mineral imbalances are just a few of the things that I've learned about that seem to cause over sensitivity to minor (or major) stress. Not to mention caffeine or allergies and toxic exposure to things all around us.

Proper breathing can usually help tremendously but the underlying cause may still be lurking.

I like Pema Chodren. I feel she's better than St Teresa at describing the barbs of anxiety, the little pricks. St Teresa called them alligators. What? Pema calls them hooks... I mention this because it's an overlooked topic in practicing meditation... am on break, am being abrupt...

I had my first anxiety attack when my husband was in the ICU after quadruple bypass surgery. I didn't know what it was but my mother did. So, she helped me breathe through it, but I ended up getting checked out at the ER anyway, because, as one of the doctor's said, if I had any undiagnosed heart issues, with the stress of the situation it could be problematic.
I now can tell if the symptoms start, and using breathing techniques I keep it under control.

I do think that possibly, since you do have complicated responses, it might not hurt to see if acupuncture could help. And I think that there are many practices that can help, especially if we front load it, meaning use it to increase our equanimity daily, so our baseline is less reactive, and then also use it when a situation arises that tests us. Wow, that sentence needs editing.

Sorry your therapist is on vacation. Maybe try practices like an experiment to see what helps you. Even 3-5 minutes once or twice a day can have an impact. It doesn't have to be something that you have to drive somewhere to learn, and spend lots of time.

Journaling, reading/memorizing certain poems, breathing, etc. A simple mantra to remind yourself that while you are having ____ reaction, you are not that reaction. Any other mantra. Singing a certain song to yourself. Imagining yourself at the beach, or wherever is a healing spot.

Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi,

I can have a hard time getting started in the morning.

I have a children's picture book I read to myself and it helps get me pumped for the day. Whatever works, as they say.

Good luck to you. I'd suggest that if you can, let go of the label, look at the suggestion and see if there is any validity to it, and appreciate that the person cared enough to suggest it.

Sorry I deleted about the worries (kind of ironic) I had about a friend referring to my possible anxiety attacks...which I wasn't sure I have.

Yes, thanks, Beth Ann. I think I just have to expend so much energy in certain situations where there are a handful of things I need to worry about (as in this class, which I deleted information about--it's dance, so I need to worry about my actual performance/technique, worry about whether I should stick with the men's or women's role--I'm given the green light to do both within the class based on my and other people's needs--I worry about not getting upset! with some of the personal dynamics within the class from past experience...)

In the post I deleted, I had had a friend mention to ME about the anxiety, and whether an acupuncturist I was planning on going to for an unrelated matter could give me something for this.

I feel like I'm just pretty highly emotional and sensitive, a perfectionist, as well as easily frustrated, and I have limited coping strategies, but outside of meditation I'm not sure what would work.

Overall in my life I do NOT think I am an anxious person.

I'm certainly not qualified to diagnose anyone, but my understanding of Anxiety is that, along with Depression, it is the most common of all diagnoses, and you don't have to experience "attacks" to be diagnosed. There is "Generalized Anxiety Disorder" (GAD), and probably some other varieties I know nothing about it. At any rate, diagnoses don't matter -- but your well being does! Since you already have a therapeutic relationship, it wouldn't hurt to bring it up in session.

I'm also a very emotional being, and it causes me (and sometimes those around me) distress sometimes. However, I think it is also a real strength. So many people don't "feel the feels," if you know what I mean, and they don't connect to the emotion in others. Also, I've found that "overfeeling" sometimes works as an early warning system, and "overthinking" sometimes helps me find the best solution to problems before others are even aware of the issue.

Finally, as a music therapist and performer, I find that music (and I imagine dance) uncovers a lot of emotion, which is partly why we love the arts! You might find yourself more sensitive in this environment because you're touching, and being touched, and experiencing music meant to stir the pot!
