I bought pheromone traps for clothes moths this spring. Interestingly, I trapped a number of moths behind my dresser in the weeks after I'd meticulously vacuumed every crevice in it and the rest of the room too. Another trap in my closet has no moths. Go figure.

The traps were purchased after I found 6-7 moth holes in a cashmere sweater that had been unworn in my dresser for less than 10 days. It had been cleaned prior to storage. I couldn't believe the damage in such a short time. After that, I put all of my freshly washed woolens in ziplock bags and thence in the freezer for two weeks (DH's comments were hilarious).

We once had an upright freezer in our mudroom that I donated because we didn't keep enough food in it to justify the electricity. I wish I'd kept it. I would have turned it into cold storage for my sweaters. Grrr. I hate moths.

Oh, you know, I had a carpet beetle issue, but with just very specific items. They were especially fond of the one 100% pashmina cashmere wrap I own (and then nibbled a couple of neighboring scarves but not as eagerly).
I washed, dry cleaned, vacuumed, etc, nothing worked. Then I washed the affected items again, dried them well, and put them individually inside ziplock bags. No more new holes! And the existing ones didn't get bigger! (The wrap is too nice to give away because of a few holes that I can easily disguise, so I kept it... :O)
I have no idea if storing clothes so hermetically is recommended (I usually like them to breathe) but it saved my natural-fiber scarves.

Thanks, Suzanne. I suppose moths like company so there is more than one bug to worry about. I did all the things that you mentioned and still moths ate some cotton Gap tops that were cleaned before storing in the closet. They also ate a clean Loft sweater that was acrylic, nylon, spandex and 20% wool.
I keep my yarn stash in rubbermaid containers and also put soap bars, lavender, tea bags. I hope it is safe there.
What I find about moths is that they love humid areas. They thrive on the East Coast but I never saw any in the dry Southern California heat. That is an indication that maybe I should move there...

Yes, you can have them without carpets. The adult beetles fly, and, just like with pantry moths and flour or cereal and that kind of thing, they can ride in on things even new from warehouses and such. As a knitter, I once got some yarn shipped from a company that was already chewed on a little (they replaced it free).

They're very different species so I'm sure prevention is also. But I've never tried to get rid of moths...I don't use mothballs or anything as toxic as that. The last moth problem I saw was years ago when I lived elsewhere, so hasn't been an issue for a while!

Other than keeping items clean before you store them (they tend to like wool that has been worn/used), I don't know what to recommend to prevent them showing up. Thorough vacuuming, including of all crevices, is one thing to do. I have also put bars of soap in my tubs of yarn to throw them off the scent, but like with lots of these things, there are all kinds of remedies that who knows if they actually work...see what the internet recommends nowadays.

Suzanne, can you have carpet beetles even if you don't have carpets? Do you get rid of them (or try to ) the same way you do for moths?

Just a note that often, the isolated holes one finds in clothing containing wool are likely to be from carpet beetles rather than moths. I've seen wool items completely eaten by moths, but carpet beetles are more "hit and run."

K.M., I am in the U.S., too. I will research online shopping for those little critters. If they are not too expensive and are not going to affect the bees outside, I am game.

Joyce B, I had no idea about these wasps till I read people talking about them in an email list where most people are based in Europe. (Not sure how easy they are to find in the US where I am--not sure where you are located.) Everyone who shared their experience said they never even saw the wasps! And the moths disappeared. And they said it was the only thing that worked. Apparently they could order it online...

Thank you all for the input!
Jill, those seem nice, I will keep an eye on them.
Julie, so good to hear that pheromones worked for your pantry! Maybe they will help my closet, too.
K.M., that was such an interesting read, thanks for sharing it! At first I thought the wasps were usual-sized but now that I see they are small I will see if my museum of natural history has those for sale.
Other than the above, I may need to borrow a small lizard but I will need to trim their nails first

I've used pheromone traps for pantry moths and they were extremely effective (we used these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.....1Qv9WxDdAL). These particular ones will not work for clothes moths (different species), but I would definitely try the appropriate pheromone traps based on this success!

I recently followed a discussion in another forum where people used wasps (yes, live wasps--a special kind) to get rid of their moths.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new.....olution.ht

Can't vouch from personal experience, but they were all saying it was the only thing that worked...

Have you tried them? Can you share your experience with them?
I read that they are supposed to work but are very pricy. I just found moth holes on a blend type fabric with 20% wool and the rest synthetic, these are hungry moths for sure.
You can also share anything else that has worked for you. TIA.
