fashintern, what a GREAT question!! I have been thinking menswear isn't modern, probably because I've worn it for so long that I have this idea that it can't really be modern. Now that you ask it that way, I realize it can and is modern! Duh, slaps head. My desire to move away from it is for a change, not because it looks old fashioned.

I DID see your outfit with the long shirt, I'll have to consider that before I hack/hem. I don't own any nice tanks/camis in white or light grey but should be easy enough to find one, at least the white would be. And I love the grey column of color idea that Gretchen suggested too. Great ideas!

Is looking menswearish not modern? I think that to do menswear with sass you have to up the traditional menswear components, not de-emphasize them. That’s not my thing, so the only ideas I can think of are a fedora (ha! No, not what you want) and cuff links, which can be menswear and pretty at the same time. If you follow the style, I bet you can come up with much better accessories/accents for that.

I haven’t read the other comments, but before you cut off that flowing tail, take a look at the outfit suggestions for striped maxi shirts from a few weeks ago. I don’t think the whole outfit has to be floating and flowing to include a long, flowing shirttail. Idk how flowing it is, but the long striped shirt in my recent WiW got more compliments than anything else, and I had it on with slim-fitting pants and a tank top that fit in the conventional way.

Besides, it sounds like you like the shirt the way it is. Go with it!

ETA: read the comments, love Gretchen’s idea with the cami. Do you have a silky one or a shell in one of the colors of the stripes? You could keep the jeans, or try light-colored pants, or maybe even a column of color with grey pants and a lustrous grey top underneath the shirt.

Thanks CJ, great suggestions! Your shirt reminds me that one of the things I like about the one I got is that it has no pockets which I think makes for a more streamlined look particularly when you are short like me.

Thanks Katerina, great ideas. I think you are right that the sparkle and thin material do take it away from a menswear look.

Cindysmith, yes I think I agree on that burgundy sweater. I love the texture and color but not so crazy about the shape/silhouette so I'm going to return it.

Thanks La P. The burgundy sweater look is ok, but I'm trying to move away from classic and more toward artistic or dramatic or something.

The only one that felt (a little) menswear to me was the burgundy topper, but accessories could soften it up really easily.

I like it with the moto jacket and grey sweater best

Very nice shirt and versatile. I like it as you wear it in 1 and 2. You could also roll up the sleeves there and wear your lovely bracelets with it and/or add a scarf. It looks great layered, too. If it’s comfortable - certainly a lovely, classic and practical piece.

ETA I don’t think this shirt looks menswear-ish, the sparkle and thin material soften the look.

i bought a gauzy long sleeve shirt from Anthro this summer. I love the light fabric, possibility of rolling the sleeves up and have worn it with denim skirt, summer ankle pants, etc. I must wear a camisole underneath due to its see-through which defeats the keeping cool idea. It dresses up casual wear, a plus for me.

For Fall, number 9 looks like a winner! Earth tones might be fun to play with. I tried front-tucking my long sleeve blouse and it worked for the denim (olive) skirt and the ankle pants. I haven't tried it with my jeans but I'm pretty sure it will work.

Thanks Gigi. Your reasoning is just like mine

Angie, great idea, black pants and earthy accents. Will try that too!

Canada, HAH, those red shoes are indeed great although I don't reach for them as often as I thought I would. Maybe once the heat finally leaves....(I posted the find in case you are interested, they come in quite a few colors..or at least they did but seem sold out at Nordstrom). And I do absolutely love pale grey.

Gretchen, YES wearing it open over a grey or white tank is a great idea! Your other ideas are good too although I don't have a maxi skirt or asymmetrical sweater at the moment...

Thanks Jessie!

Karen13 thanks, and yes the gaping is very manageable.

Jessiekams, my thoughts exactly! I had a white shirt sort of like this but it didn't button all the way down (so more of a tunic style) and the neckline was too wide so it always felt sloppy. This one seems a great upgrade with all the uses you describe and more.

I find a gauzy long sleeve shirt to be super useful in summer. Especially for travel! Good for layering in case of cold weather, good for modesty if visiting churches or temples, good for A/C coverage.

Keep! Versatile and classic. The only gapping I see is a tiny bit in 8. And normal and fixable. I really like it tied and with both toppers.

I like it - especially with the higher contrast top. It looks like it would be a good versatile piece.

Could you/would you wear it as a topper over a camisole or light tee? If it's more lightweight it might help you get more mileage. I could see it open over a silver tank with gray or lighter bottoms.

Also, would it work to add structure to an outfit? Maybe over a maxi skirt, or as the grounding of an asymetrical sweater?

Just thoughts. I love finding a basic with extra details!

I guess if it were me...since you don't have anything similar and this seems to fill an important wardrobe hole (lightweight, noncrisp button-down that will also work under shirts), I would probably keep it since you paid quite a bit less than full price.

Good question Angie, yes I did try the sit down test and the overall fit is fine. Every button-down shirt I've ever owned or tried on, whether regular or petite, fitted or loose, has had some amount of gaping, so I always have safety pins in my closet and pin the gaping area from the back. I've been doing this so long I don't even think about it. And yes,, earth toned toppers would be great too!

I found this shirt at Anthro last week in the sale section, and am mulling whether to keep. It’s a soft gauzy fabric with grey pinstripes and a pattern of little tiny sequins. Cindysmith’s recent posting about fit
issues with shirts gave me some things to consider. There is nothing in the description to indicate this, but the shirt is very oversized. An XS fit me well (I typically wear a 10/12P size in tops) except that it’s too long, and the sleeves are loose enough that I can fold them up easily unlike many shirts I try where the sleeves are too tight.

Pros

I really like it. I am not so fond of button down shirts in stiffer fabrics but like them in softer flowy ones like this one. I generally prefer the classic shirt style over more modern shapes with bell sleeves etc.

The fit is quite good, I’ll have to shorten the hem but that’s easy enough.

After my trip to Albuquerque last May I wanted to get a couple more light colored gauzy summer shirts for hot days when I want to be covered up – this is the first one I’ve found that checks all the boxes

Anthro quality is consistently good, the pieces I’ve bought from there always last a long time.

It will work for fall under sweaters.

It was about ¼ of the original price at end of summer sale

I could see wearing it with a flowy skirt (like Angie’s midi skirt posting today), although I don’t own one and don’t feel inspired to look for one right now.

Cons

I have to think carefully about styling this so it stays reasonably modern looking and not super menswear-ish. That could be tricky because a pinstriped button down shirt is inherently menswear-ish. .

Outfit creation lab

With Jeans and red loafers, showing the original fit.

Same outfit, with a half-baked attempt at what it will look like shortened.

….with a waist-tie styling on the shirt…this would work with white jeans too.

…add light blue moto

Switch to darker jeans and grey booties. Like this outfit better - jeans are more flattering and less contrast with shoes

Just the shirt, tucked into the darker jeans. Don't like the tucked look, much better to go with the waist tie or leave it untucked

With a lightweight burgundy cardigan, silver necklace. I need to add a cami once it cools off enough to dress like this.

This last look is very classic, with a gorgeous Theory cashmere
vneck I just found at TJmaxx. All the pieces are very nice quality and fit well, and there is a part of me that loves this look, but it's more about loving the pieces than the outfit. I am not liking such classic menswear looks as much as I used to and want to go with more artistic/modern ones. I may keep the sweater but not wear this shirt under it.

Would love to hear any and all suggestions, thanks in advance1
