Here's the website: http://www.hilaryradley.com

There's a store locator on the website but the links don't work -- might be better to type in the name at individual retailers named.

My Hilary Radley coat is 4 years old now -- it's a wool/ alpaca blend, very soft, quite lightweight, and warm, although not as warm as a puffer coat, of course. It's a slightly different style than the one depicted this year but has that same convertible collar -- can be worn as a funnel (if you have a longish neck and short hair), and "envelope" collar, or open.

Wow, many options to consider--thank you!

Jeanie and Laura: I've found the sizing on Lands End outerwear to be unreliable, but I may be able to find a Sears that carries them and try on.

Suz: That Hilary Radley coat is particularly gorgeous. I've actually haven't seen that brand here in the States. I can almost certainly track down the others, though.

Love those Hudson's Bay coats. I forgot to say that I have the JC Lady coat in black and I wear it as a dress coat for a night out. I don't find it very warm though. Perhaps it would be better with the Thinsulate opiton? I noticed that the Lands End coats are rated for warmth.

A few more options -- I got these on a Canadian website but the brands are available in the US. Frustratingly, the site does not list the actual fabric composition in most cases.

The London Fog comes in multiple colours and neutrals. The Hilary Radley also comes in black.

This probably sounds nuts, but check H&M. I found a well-made, classic, wool dress coat there last year for my daughter for under $100.

Brooks Brothers also has sales, and some kind of points/membership program - maybe with a credit card? My dad is a happy BB customer and says that the quality is still quite high.

I echo the rec of Lands' End for coats, as well. What about vintage? I see vintage wool coats in the thrift and consignment stores all the time, since a lot of people prefer more casual coats these days.

Land's End is good sometimes. They have a higher wool content. Here is one example but there are others.

I'm on the hunt, too, lthough I'm looking more at the $200 or below range, and a size 14, which is even harder!

I'll let you know if I find something promising. I've also noticed a big decline in quality recently, and as very disappointed in Macy's.

Can't vouch for quality as I have not seen them in person, but a couple to try at different price points. The Brooks Brothers one is out of your range but I always find that it can be worth looking at the more expensive items for comparison's sake.

My nicest wool coat (bought four seasons ago) came from a big department store in Canada but is a Hilary Radley New York coat -- I am sure those must be available in the US also.

Here's my dilemma: I need a new winter dress coat. I've never had much trouble finding one I liked in the past, but this year it's a struggle. If anyone has any suggestions for a coat that matches the following criteria, I'd be grateful.

1) At least 75% wool (or cashmere). So many coats now seem to be 50% wool or less. That won't cut it in a New England winter.
2) A classic shape. I really dislike this year's oversized coat trend (on me). I also tend to keep my coats 4-5 years, so I don't buy trendy.
3) Suitable for a size 8-10 curvy hourglass.
4) Well made. Looking at coats in stores, I've been kind of horrified by how far quality has declined in the few years since I bought my last one. I do not want the button falling off or the lining ripping within a few months.
5) $400 or less.

The best I've found so far is the J.Crew Lady Day coat, but I had to size up to get it to fit in the chest, and so it's clearly a bit big in the waist.
