Janet, I'm either in the large or maximalist category myself (haven't counted in awhile)! And happy to be there, so I didn't mean it to be judgmental. Just sharing my mental image of different closet sizes, because of Viva's subject line. :)

Viva, I don't want to be a wardrobe minimalist either. I am when I travel, and it works, but I miss being able to put a wide variety of outfits together. I also never feel overwhelmed by my large closet, and it doesn't slow down my decision making in the morning, so while I find things like Project 333 fascinating, I'm not the target audience. I am much more of a minimalist in other areas of my life: linens, the kitchen, bathroom (I have 1 soap for my face & body that doubles as shaving cream, 1 shampoo, and argan oil that I use as both a face and hair moisturizer), and I generally live life on a small, studio apartment scale, because I'm content to have only a few things, but my closet and bookcase are the exceptions.

Viva, I just assumed you weren't a skirt person! Hehe: I actually only have 2 pairs of denim jeans, because it's just not a huge part of my style. Like Janet, I really admire your year round closet. You know, I could probably have a reverse almost year round closet right now (since our winters are short and usually not really cold) if I were a closet minimalist, but fall/winter style is my favourite, so I won't give up my woolens and corduroys and velvet blazers and wool coats, even if I don't get to wear them often right now. Hopefully I'll be moving north fairly soon anyway & then they'll come into their own.

@Lynn, the 10 pairs of boots includes 3 pairs of tall boots, 1 pair of mid-height Frye harness, 1 pair of 25-year-old cowboy boots, and 5 pairs of booties. Shooties (1 pair) are in the shoe count.

@Claire, followed your advice and culled 5 pairs of dupe / ill-fitting work pants last night. I'm going to re-review my tops and sweaters today!

@Janet, I really like the year-round wardrobe, and I think you are exactly right -- it is because our summers in Maine tend not to be as hot, and they are very short. Also, in the summer, I freeze in AC, and in winter I can run really warm in heating. So I do layer. I strive for year-round dressing, with just a few really heavy things for winter. And I only own 3 pairs of shorts (2 of which I bought this summer for our vacation!!!!).

Interesting! I perceive your wardrobe as having enough variety I never would have guessed it falls closer to the minimalist end of the spectrum, although as E says, these measurements are all arbitrary. (Ulp, I'm maximalist by those measurements -- I did a loose count, and I have almost 100 tops hanging in my closet, and that's not counting tee-shirts! but that is counting 4 seasons).

It's also interesting that we've gotten into such a purge/analysis mode around here lately. I do agree with Suz that NAS seems to spark this to a degree. This is the heaviest shopping time of the year for many of us, so I think it's natural to want to overhaul when you're bringing in a significant number of new pieces. I've been so anxious to (thoughtfully) purge that whenever I go up to our room to put laundry away or do some other little task, I'll walk quickly into the closet to see if something strikes me. Lately it's really helping me to let go of something if I think one of my nieces will enjoy it, so I'm specifically asking myself that question when I look at a piece. I have a BIG box to mail to my one niece in Texas, which makes me happy. She's a single mom working three jobs and can use all the help she can get.

Anyway, I digress. The other thing that struck me about your analysis is that you get use out of your pieces year-round! I feel like my summer and winter wardrobes are two entirely different entities. Maybe because our summers are so hot here -- I barely wear jeans. It's great that your wardrobe works so well for you in all seasons. I'm a little envious.

Back again to say that I think I AM happy with my numbers, except that I forsee a shoe cull in the future of maybe 2 or three pairs. These are ones that have only been worn once or twice in the last 12 months, and 2 were thrifted.
When you say 10 boots, are you including ankle-boots and shooties here?

Oh, yes, E, I've completely let go of the idea that I am minimal. I could never meet the demands of what you outlined, nor do I really want to. I think I was just shocked that some of the numbers were so low. 1 skirt? Really?

But then again, not so shocked -- because I am a serial purger of everything. When my girls were little, I would wait until they were on a play date and then ransack their closets with a garbage bag. I got away with it until they were about 8 and started demanding I leave their toys alone. haha

Claire, I am going to take your voice with me back into my closet. I need to try on every pair of pants in there. Some of them must have to go at this point. There really is no reason for me to still have them all. I don't think I can pare down to only the Vince but I am sure I can let go of 2 pairs for sure, maybe 3. And I will feel good about that. I also may begin 1 in, 1 out, from this point forward except maybe shoes, because I think I have a little room to build.

Thanks for all the feedback and help. This is a huge step for me -- I didn't realize how big until I counted and started really thinking about what it all meant.

I would think you're on the smaller side but not a minimalist, but that's probably because I read minimalist/voluntary simplicity blogs & books where anything more than 5 pairs of footwear at most and, say, 2 coats (one for winter, one for fall/spring) is seen as excessive. Not to mention, they only have 1 purse and maybe 5-7 outfits/season.

If I think it out, my mental scale is like this:
minimalist = 50 items or less including everything except socks & undies for year round
small=50-120 including everything except socks & undies for year round
medium=120-180 including everything except socks & undies for year round
large=180-250 including everything except socks & undies for year round
maximalist=more than 250

Of course, that's completely arbitrary! What's interesting to me is that there are so many different methods/strategies to achieve the same wardrobe size. If 2 women bought 25 new clothing pieces a year, but one of them followed 1 in/1 out or was hard on her clothes and one of them didn't and was gentle on her clothes, within a couple of years one's closet could be double the size of the other's, despite the same amount of shopping. Or if one's shopping secondhand and one's shopping retail, their spending will be very different even if they're both acquiring say 1 coat, 3 shoes, 1 pair of boots, 10 tops, 5 bottoms, 3 dresses, and 2 toppers of similar fabric/quality. I found things like that fascinating!

I find these posts so interesting. I have a similar size closet and it makes me anxious too. I often feel like I have too much stuff for my lifestyle, but then I read the posts where people have 3 times as much clothing and wonder if I belong here. I just do not want so many things and I want to really wear what I have.

Just thinking out loud but thanks for sharing. I learn so much here.

I'm enjoying reading about your wardrobe counts and thoughts viva! I love the discussion going on.

This is the way it would work for me. I'd receive the Vince pants (that you have coming) and then when I went to put them in the closet, I'd see 4+ other pairs of black work pants and I'd think, I don't need all these, which one(s) am I going to get rid of? And I'd choose a pair or two that seemed redundant. Then, because I really like to live on the edge, I'd try to decide if there was any earthly reason why I needed to have any more than that one new pair. Is one pair wide legged and hemmed for heels and the other pair slim? If they are both similar silhouette and fabrication--essentially playing the same role, I would (gleefully, 'cause that's just how I am) get rid of all but the new pair. So, then you might think that's bad, because now the new pair will get worn to bits. They might wear out in just one year, or maybe two! Well, then you get to buy a newer, even more current pair. You know you'll want to choose your favorites to wear over and over and not have to wear one of those old pairs just because of guilt.

I think I shop first and culling is a natural product of that. There's a new favorite in the closet, and something has to go. That's why I immediately felt dissonance when I brought home a second pair of black jeans the other day. Why did I need two? Since the new ones are more versatile than the old ones, I decided last year's pair have to go. It sure makes getting dressed faster. When I want to wear black on the bottom, I only have one option.

@Suz: Guilty! I have two kinds of churn going on. No--maybe three! 1) the item just doesn't feel like me and I'm not wearing it much due to wrong color or style (or wearing it and hating it--re. the striped dress), 2) the item was bought for my fantasy life and I'm not able to wear it much (moto jeans and Okalas) or 3) it was a painful purchase (having to do with ill fit, like the pointy-toed shoes). I'd like to cut down on all three of course. I'd ideally like to be discarding because of hard wear only, but as you know, I have a way to go!

LynD: We are twins! I had to count.

- 8 year-round purses (includes one large clutch and one evening clutch -- did not count totes)
- 15 pairs of shoes (3 are summer only)
- 10 pairs of boots (2 pairs heavily loved but I cannot part with them)

How do you feel about your wardrobe? I still want more shoes and boots. I think I still have to call my wardrobe small (as opposed to medium) only because my non-Fabber friend Pam is my real point of comparison, and she gives away more clothing than I own every year. :)

And Suz, yes, my summer is very casual. Very little work travel. And this is a huge tourist area, so it's all about the beach and fried clams and grilling. My friends are really busy in the summer so ladies' nights are rare... I'd better stop because I am getting too depressed. I'll be much happier and more fashionable in September! :)

I am going to have to count mine!!
I think that seems like a perfect size wardrobe, and well matched to your lifestyle.
I think it is okay to keep a couple of older items that are rarely worn, but that you do still pull out IF you still love them, or at least like them a lot. I have a couple of things in this category-a silver silk jacket, a multi -coloured silk shirt - both stunning, but only called on once a year or every second year. But because they are truly classic and unusual (if that makes sense) I feel okay to keep them.

Your numbers are a small amount in my opinion too (I can't believe you only have 22 tops!). I think your planned purchases are very smart since they will work well with your existing pieces and will have nicer/different details that will make them different and bring you joy when you wear them. My closet has a slow, "revolving door" with items being sent to consignment once a month. After I read Lisa's old thread about the accident in her closet (the rod falling and finding all her clothes on the floor!) I live in fear :) so I'm careful to have enough but not an overload. Still working on it.

ETA: I basically do live in my pyjamas, by the way. Just a street worthy version thereof. This is true summer OR winter when I am working at home.

Jeans (or shorts or a VC tube skirt)
Sweater (or linen tee or button down)
Belt (if part of outfit)
Slippers (in winter) or bare feet (in summer)

That's it. Pretty basic, no? Yet it has been more fun due to the shapes and quality of the items I bought.

Ah, Suz. Such wisdom. I think that you've really defined my approach -- or our approach -- so well: a tightly curated closet with a predictable degree of churn every year. It's a bit like getting a diagnosis; the label alone makes me feel better.

But reviewing more carefully what I do have and what I haven't worn will be very helpful to me going forward -- great idea.

Although we're alike in a lot of ways I think we are opposites seasonally. I have zero interest in my own fashion in the summer. I could live in my pajamas, or a t-shirt and shorts. I love looking at what everyone else is wearing but I have no motivation to do anything myself. Already I am counting the days until fall, when I can start dressing again! Perhaps in that Vince sweater.

You are so right! It's as if we are kids with a big project due....down to the nitty gritty of analysis we get! :)

I also think the NAS brings it out in us. We start thinking ahead to fall, purging what we don't want to make room for what we do want.

It's so funny -- late in the fall I wrote a post almost exactly like this. I think at that time I had 87 items across all four seasons not counting coats, bags, belts, scarves or shoes. Or workout gear.

Now I have more like 115 items -- a big shop this spring made that happen! But I am sure I will be culling again very soon.

I suspect you and I are similar in preferring a tightly curated but not truly minimal wardrobe with regular updates. I am not sure how to deal with this dilemma, either -- I mean how to handle (or even think about) the buy/ purge cycle.

Our wardrobes (unlike some people's -- even like my own, pre YLF) are not small because we don't actually buy anything. Our wardrobes are small because we buy, wear for a season or two, and then recycle in favour of something new.

Also -- I've noticed that Claire -- with her TRULY minimal wardrobe -- does the same thing. I am not sure if it is even possible to change the pattern when you get down to numbers as low as hers. At least it wouldn't be for me. Because I would wear my clothes out in a season if I only had ten items. Maybe not the jeans, but certainly the knits and shoes.

Even at my own numbers, I pretty much wear out some summer tops in a season of wear. Ditto shoes. And some knits almost seem to self-destruct.

(BTW, LOVE that Vince sweater Jackie linked to....)

Anyway. I have no real advice. What I'm trying to do now is think about what seems like a reasonable amount of churn. It's going to happen -- there's no question. So how small do I want to keep my closet, and how much churn should I allow? I'm going to go over the UNWORN items from this summer to make some deliberations about that.

I have never in my life before now HAD unworn items (apart from special occasion wear); it just didn't happen. I didn't have enough clothes not to wear every one of them! This year, I will have a few unworn items. I'm going to go through a process of asking myself why I didn't wear:

Fit?

Style? (This is probable -- they didn't feel current enough, I'm betting).

Practicality? (Also a biggie)

And then asking myself if I was bored with the outfits I DID wear. (Not so far, not this summer.)

I think for me, personally, I get bored the most in our long winters, and I need to allow myself more options (and a more generous closet) during the winter. Summers are shorter and easier. I can probably pare back there.

Maybe people like us just have to allow ourselves a certain amount of churn every year? Angie does that. She recycles articles while they are still current and gives someone else some pleasure. Of course, it is her JOB to look up to date and amazing. But no reason why we can't look that way, too. If it fits our budget and makes us happy?

Jackie, I love that ... I could make that work in my budget if I didn't buy anything else for a little while. Might be worth it. Do you think black or charcoal?

Great analysis! LOL about doing our homework while Angie's away :)

Have you seen this? ... I saw it first on the Vince website after you mentioned your pants in another thread...now I see it on Nordstrom...not on sale though...

I'd love to try it on

Whoo hoo! I'm loving these closet analysis posts lately!

I would say that borders on a smaller/minimal closet - although of course everyone's version of "minimal" is going to be different.

Your questions about purging older items that you still wear is one I'm wrestling with at the moment. I have the purple Amber Sun swing-style jacket from NAS three years ago. It's still in great shape and I adore the color and style. But I'm not sure it's still current, you know? So do I purge or keep? No clue.

I think it's very interesting what we do when Angie is away. It's like we all get down to business and do our homework! And Shannon is the teacher! I've done some more purging -- which I do regularly -- and I thought I would follow some of you and count, for the first time.

I always knew I had a small wardrobe:

- most of my things live in one side of one closet,
- many are year-round (despite living in Maine),
- many suit both casual wear and my work life (which is business casual at best),
- I like to buy, but I think about buying more than I actually do it,
- some of my items are pretty old (fave sweaters and shirts from 7+ years ago),
- and I purge a lot.

But some of these numbers surprised even me. I'd love some feedback on my assessment and also on my plans for the fall/winter (below).

I did not count loungewear, outwerwear, or shoes -- but those numbers would be completely in line with what you see here. That is, low.

22 tops
- shells, dressy tees, etc.: 6 casual/dressy only, 5 also for work
- button down, cotton/silk/etc.: 3 casual only, 8 also for work

18 sweaters
- 10 casual only
- 8 also for work (but wear for work rarely because they have sleeves and can be too warm for moderating)

11 dresses
- 1 for winter only, casual or work
- 4 year-round, can be worn for work
- 4 for going out, year-round
- 2 for summer only, super casual

11 Bottoms (non-denim)
- 1 full-length pale gray cotton, 3-season for work
- 4 full-length black or charcoal for work
- 4 ankle pants, for work (limited locations in winter for work travel)
- 1 navy curator pants
- 1 black skinny cargos, for casual

9 Bottoms (denim) - ETA 2 pairs I forgot about
- 3 blue full-length (BF, relaxed skinny, straight)
- 1 blue skinny cropped (wear year-round, tuck into boots)
- 1 blue flared cropped (may wear into fall, but they are getting to be too big)
- 1 white cropped (wear mostly warm months)
- 1 white full-length straight (wear year-round)

- 1 black Paige straight

-1 grey Kut skinny

6 jackets
- 1 leather for cold weather only (I am not counting my leather biker jacket which is more outerwear)
- 3 year-round, work and casual
- 2 warm weather only

1 skirt -- :)
- VC Tube

Here's how I feel about it all.

- I am glad my wardobe is small. I don't like having a lot of stuff; it actually can make me anxious to have a lot of things around.
- I often reach for the same things, so I know that I do love a lot of what I have.
- But I know that in my heart I am not a uniform gal. I follow trends and get excited seeing what everyone is wearing and buying. I don't know that my small wardrobe brings me quite enough joy.
- The trick for me is to make purchases that I won't want to purge at the end of the season. This happens frequently. Or, maybe that's okay if I'm not spending a lot? I don't know. I do know that I would like to have a bit more to choose from, and a few more pieces that make my heart race.
- Also, what about all those older items that I still occasionally wear? I'm not sure what to do with them. I finally purged some outdated work pants this year after getting feedback from YLF. I wonder if I am hanging on to some other stuff that is past its prime. (But that would make my wardrobe even smaller.)

I have on order the following:

Black Vince wool pants with white piping; could be worn for work or out. I'm not sure this was the smartest purchase, now, because I have a lot of work-friendly pants. But they are final sale so it is done. I do really love them (I remembered that I tried them on in the spring) and a couple of pairs of my work pants are more than 4 years old so maybe there is a swap in there somewhere. They are much more interesting than what I've got.

JCrew: some basics from their current super sale online: a black wool pencil skirt (totally justifiable, and I will wear it), 2 short-sleeve cashmere tees which will be better for work (camel and peacock blue), and a navy cropped sweater that I just liked. All the tops will work great with those navy curator pants I recently got and love.

Thinking about purchasing from NAS: Hudson or Vigoss Baby Bootcuts, a knit jacket (do not own, must be sleek tho), heeled black booties, black Vince sneakers.

Also planning to purchase burgundy Okalas (not from NAS).

Any thoughts / advice?
