Your organized sock drawer looks fantastic!

Too many of my socks seem to disappear in the laundry, or to get holes in them, so I resupply at least once a year. I haven’t counted, but I’m guessing I have about a two-week supply of cotton and knit socks. I also have at least a dozen “footie” socks in black, white, and fun colors for walks in warm weather. And I like to also keep about half a dozen “trouser socks” on hand for wearing under work pants some days.

Smart wool socks were a happy discovery for me a few years ago. They have worn well, come in heavier and lighter weights, and are available in a wide assortment of colors and patterns. They definitely help keep my feet warm outdoors in winter.

What a lovely organized sock drawer!

In a multi-season climate I think it's inevitable that one will have a large number of socks since one needs different types for different seasons and purposes. I've got about 35 in my own drawer just now, plus another handful that I wear just as loungewear/pj socks.

La Ped, i agree and thus I’ve largely given up on the idea that there’s some perfect iteration of every needed item out there if we just keep trying to find it. It’s not just financial but the time and energy spent on things that maybe just don’t matter to me that much. I’d rather ‘make do’ per my previous thread. For my latest sock purchase, I was running low on cozy socks for at home. Facebook saw me checking out some options and sent me an ad for a small business in Montreal. They seem earnest and the socks were cute and reasonably priced. I chose some with decent natural fibre content and they came in one day. So far so good but I’m also not super invested in the long term outcome - they’re just socks that make me happy for now, chosen somewhat mindfully rather than just from the available options at my usual stores. Meanwhile I also need leggings and I’m absolutely paralyzed about $20 fleece lined ones, fast fashion but at least from a local store, vs $60 locally made organic cotton I suspect won’t wear that well, vs $130 locally made, more sustainable bamboo that apparently last a long time but then so did my old $20 fleece ones. ARGH it’s making me nuts and meanwhile I’m wearing out some favourite skinny jeans that I’d rather reserve for future ‘real life’ but actually cost less than the most expensive leggings so what even makes sense anymore I don’t know!!!

Sorry for my long thread highjacks suntiger! Apparently socks are a touchy subject with me, lol

Such a great collection! I have a small collection of socks. I had to replace all my socks after our house was flooded a few years ago. I am very picky about socks, so it takes me some time to find the right ones.

That’s frustrating! And I find if it’s not packs, it’s other pricing tricks that get me with in-person shopping - for example, I buy cheap underwear that’s sold in bins (classy I know). It’s always priced ‘5 for the price of 4’ or something, such that I spend way too much time picking through the bin looking for 5 pairs in my style, size and colours. And sometimes leave empty handed because I can’t find 5 I want. I’m at the point where I’d rather buy more expensive underwear sold individually, but honestly haven’t had any luck finding any that work as well. And expense and frustration of trying those duds is there too. Complicating my efforts to simplify

Yes Jules! Underwear is the worst about that- they'll always put white in the packs for some reason :/
The packs I got were straight black, and these brown. The ones that look cognac are beige in person, too light to pass as a nude on me. Wish they were true to the pic.

The packs drive me slightly nuts because they so often don’t have matching pairs, and they put the desirable pattern or colour in with less desirable options... with my conditioning to buy two pairs of each I very easily go from wanting one pair to buying 6 (two packs of three). I’m convinced it’s a scam to get me to buy more But seriously, I get the marketing appeal of the mixed packs. I’m just trying to be more mindful about buying what I only actually want and need, and it’s amazing how that can lead to spending more money (in this situation by buying individual pairs in duplicate rather than packs). Less clutter and waste in the long run though, hopefully.
*This isn’t a lecture about anyone’s buying habits, just some musing.

Wondering if my tight snow boots fit with my thinnest socks now!
Most of mine came in packs- so can be re-paired when needed. There's at least 1 singleton in that drawer.

Buying say half a dozen pairs in one simple style and neutral colour of choice definitely makes laundry simpler. And as they get holes or just vanish, it doesn’t matter because you still have matches (yes you have an odd number but the extra can stay in a drawer until it’s needed). It’s something to consider if you’re ‘pairing’ down going forward. My mom always told me to buy at least two pairs of any given style for this reason, and it’s some of the only clothing advice that’s stuck! It has a disadvantage in that it does cost more to try out a new brand or style.
I go back and forth on patterned vs. plain. Since I’m home all the time now and wearing very basic neutral clothes, I just ordered some fun striped socks from a small business in Montreal (yes Mom, two pairs of each style!). I appreciate the reminder here to wear slippers to reduce the wear on the socks since I’d like to wear these frequently and keep them nice.
I spent about $60 to try out this brand and get free shipping. The last time I tried to ‘invest’ in new socks I spent well over $100 and the brand (Bleuforet) didn’t turn out to be good quality. I could see it as soon as they came out of the dryer all wrinkled up. They wore thin and got holes relatively quickly, and some of the roll top ones wouldn’t stay up while others do (so it’s not just my body but something about the knit).

For everyone saying they wear socks without slippers around the house, and that the socks wear out quickly—the slouchy otk socks with rubber dots on the bottom that Angie found for me/my sister at Free People sold out quickly, but they have lots of other styles of yoga/house socks that might not wear out so fast.

I also have probably at least 50 pairs of socks! But I have a variety and each type has its own purpose: a whole collection of athletic socks includes mid-calf height thick hiking socks, and different weights of ankle socks for cycling, running and walking in varying temperatures. Then I have a little collection of around-the-house socks (I only started to wear slippers in the house again in the past six months), and those take a beating. Then there are knee high trouser style socks in a couple of different thicknesses, and the biggest collection: calf-height socks in a variety of thicknesses, including dark neutrals and fun prints. I bought new hiking socks in 2020 to replace some that were getting thin in the sole, so I've vowed NO MORE SOCKS. I simply don't have room for any more.

Hahaha. I have a LOT of socks because I seem to need different weights and types for different shoes snd seasons. ( Waving to rachylou!)
So it’s a bit complicated.
I have off- season sock storage! Because of wearing quarter- top socks and some no- shows in summer. And certain wool socks for gardening. Very thick fuzzy “ heat socks” on winter nights. Thin socks for some boots and thicker for others.

Believe it or not, I have been culling socks this year. Some years back I wore black knee socks with dress pants many work days, so I had over a dozen pairs. Maybe more like 20, counting Gold Toe types and thinner “ trouser socks”. Then after a while they no longer fit in many newer shoes. They all fit and feel differently, so tried them all on. I will still wear black pants of several styles, but not daily & don’t have to worry about any laundry bottlenecks. So kept only a few that fit great, don’t slide, a couple different thicknesses.

Since my foot issues and shoe fits for comfort were making socks more complicated, I looked for more ways to “ overlap “ uses. I find that hiking and gardening overlap, because I wear similar shoes/boots and I found I prefer wool even in summer, so there is overlap of function and some season.
This summer I found I like the Icebreaker low- top merino socks for athletic sneakers even in warm weather , so will likely phase out my cotton/ blend “ golf socks”. May try a no- show.
I have a Smartwool knee sock that I’m wearing a lot this winter , but previously had to give up several Smart-wool socks as being too tight/ small. Since they come in sizes, I think I maybe had the wrong size- unfortunately have no idea what these good ones are! But may try more in target size.

Also I’m moved on a bit from some years of thinking I needed lots of patterns and colors as an accessory- kind of like the scarf thing. Instead I am identifying my favorites, and my foot comfort needs ( which are real and part of feeling good all day ) and quit reflex-buying more socks until I actually need to replace or I have a real style goal for a certain thing.

I keep my socks in small drawers in my closet, and do use some of those sock- organizer dividers. So goal there is to have “ total pairs socks = (divider holes -2) “ in each drawer, to avoid overstuffing.

I love socks and love how organized yours are! Nice neutral palette too. Like Jenn, I need to get more strict about buying neutrals instead of novelty prints in this category.

At this point, I've switched almost entirely to merino socks with a lifetime guarantee (Darn Tough, which set the bar for all other sock makers, and also Icebreaker and Bombas). It's taken me a long time because good merino socks are expensive, but it means I'm essentially one in/one out with socks, and no widows! Darn Tough uses the worn-out pairs to aid with product development, so I feel good about giving them back. I still have a few cotton novelty socks lying around (sentimental concert schwag and such) and a few pairs of sheers for the rare dressy occasion, plus some bargain bin cheapies that seem to never die. I'd estimate I replace on average two or three pairs of socks per year due to holes. It sounds like a high turnover rate, but I live in a winter-dominant climate and walk a minimum of 2 miles a day. If it's really cold, I even wear socks inside my slippers at home.

I'm not strict about numbers, but I like to have at least enough pairs to get through a whole week without washing, so minimum 7 - 8 pairs each for boot weather and sneaker weather (tall and thick vs short and thin). And that doesn't factor in different heights/thicknesses/colours for different outfits. I'd say any less than a dozen pairs would be a dire situation for me! :)

I’m with you on the socks! I also have vowed to only purchase neutral socks if and when I need more. I rarely lose them, and the socks I purchase wear like iron. How many socks does one person really need? Like you, I wear socks at night to keep my feet warm. The problem I encounter are specialty socks: socks for exercise to prevent blisters; no show socks to wear with my sneakers and with ankle length jeans/trousers; knee length socks for warmth to wear with full length pants in the winter; thick socks for boots; thin socks for certain shoes; patterned and neutral socks! It ends up increasing the numbers and then they take up so much space! Ugh!

Nice looking drawer. I am the opposite - just started buying socks recently. I never wore them before. I was always barefoot at home, and wore nude knee highs outside, even in winter. But this winter because we ventilate much more than before, I felt cold barefoot so had to start wearing socks finally. My collection is still minimal - I have 5 pairs now.

Maybe its just me, but every year i find that about 25% of my socks are widowed...and so I’m constantly rebuying...

I’m also “heart eyes” over this pic, lol.
What to do with worn-out socks? I have taken to mismatched socks if I’m just hanging out at home all day long. I have new “sets” made out of widowed socks. But there are only so many uses for the worn-out ones. I have enough/only have space for so many rags of that size. I’ve seen instructions to make masks out of them, but so far none of mine that have died seem like good candidates for that (ie, a black cabled face mask?). Neither of us wear sweatbands on our wrists. There must be other uses...

They are so neat and
Organized. What a collection

I go to the men’s section and buy a pack of white and a pack of black 3x a year. Maybe you need to branch out.

It’s summer here, apparently. 88° today.

Anyway, I have too many socks too, but I wish my collection looked more like yours. I get all heart eyes for cute printed ones, and then end up wearing the same, plain, black ones over and over. Between that and the endless summer, I have a lot of seldom-worn pairs I should probably just clear out.

Your socks look so organized. For washing, try a pair or two together in a lingerie bag. After washing I take them out of the bag and hang them together to dry. No more searching for matches. I only buy new socks when I need a color like olive to blend with pants. I often change socks during the day in winter to keep my feet warm.

:) Nuancedream- I thought of Rachy and her sock drawer when I posted it. But I'm sure my socks are much more boring!

I won't rewear socks either- but wear them all day in the house. No slippers for me! I bought many of the black ones as replacements this year cause a certain =^-^= took to chewing my clothes :/
