Shiny: a grey trench would be marvellous. Soïa and Kyo have grey in their Summer collection, but it's a very, very pale grey. Not sure if this will be flattering:

(available in off-white too)

Bluefly and Revolveclothing are selling a few S&K coats from last year's Spring collection. They have a darker grey:

Hi Cricket

You're right, unbelted trenches are hard to find. Unbelted trenches in green (if not apple green) or purple are even harder to come by.
If I see one more beige, black or khaki trench, I'm going to scream. It's downright depressing!

The purple Boden coat really is lovely. A bow is different than a 'full belt', so I wouldn't discard it just yet.

Here are some more possibilities. Some are double-breasted, but I find that sometimes they can work (probably depending on how close together the buttons are?):

http://www.net-a-porter.com/am.....7uNUUefJkw
Purple but very expensive

I don't like to belt trenches as I haven't got a defined waist, so I look dumpy if I do, but I will get a single breasted trench and tie the belt at the back and this can work well if the trench is nicely shaped with princess seams.

I have never tried on a belted trench I liked either. Maybe its a short-waisted thing? I'm not big on belts period.

Loulou ... Good point about sizing. I just realized that one reason I love my winter coat is that it fits snug, therefore looks smoother.

Antje ... I'm sure those stores have amazing clothes, but I don't live near any of those.

April ... I loved the purple Boden coat. That is the exact color I pictured. I'm not sure that front bow would work for me, for the same reason belts don't (draw more attention to my waist). The Lands' End one is cute though I wonder if its shaped enough at the waist.

Shiny ... I thought I remembered you saying the same thing about belted trenches not working for you. And I agree about epaulets. For my strong shoulders, I need just a simple shoulder line.

I don't have any suggestions but just wanted to say that I commiserate.

I do own one belted trench, which is black and made of "packable" material (very lightweight nylon - no lining), from BR several years ago. Even if it's not warm at all, since it has no lining, it looks fantastic, so I keep telling myself it's all in the cut and fit. But alas this is the second spring in a row I've tried on a gazillion belted trenches -with lining for warmth- and can't find a single one that flatters. I look thick and frumpy. :-(

I am now thinking my ideal would be grey.... which only complicates matters more. (The right white was hard enough).

Also even if I found one with a belt, I'm not sure I *want* a belt. I find they are a hassle and I end up tying them in the back to make sure they don't drag on the ground. But worse than the belt are the darn epaulets and the buckly nonsense on the sleeves. Sigh...

Cricket, I saw spring trenches in the colors you describe (green, purple, as well as mauve and some blues) at a couple stores in Germany two weeks ago, I think it was at either Esprit or Benetton, and also at Mexx. If you have these stores around you, you might give them a try. Not sure this is helpful, but often the same merchandise is carried in US stores too, so it might be worth a try.

I found the same when trying on trenches they all felt too big and too much fabric i ended up going for a size smaller than i usually wear i can't wear anything too thick under it as it would be too tight but perfect for spring summer, just a thought x

I didn't want to hijack Patience's thread so thought I'd start a new one.

I'm looking for a non-neutral, single breasted, unbelted trench . Has anyone seen anything like that?

More specifically, I'd like green (not apple) or purple. And whenever I try on a belted coat, I feel thick and frumpy, but my winter coat with princess seams looks sleeker and fitted, so that's why I'm looking for one without a belt.
