I do not see sophisticated as being incongruent with the type of items that EF offers. Must sophisticated always mean tailored/structured? I think there are many ways to incorporate EFs offerings into a Sophisticated Fun wardrobe. In fact, her styles would be the first place I might look to effect this rubric. I have confidence you will pull off this style shift in fabulous ways, Shannon.

You and El Cee are on the right track. By all means get the same dress again - why not!

Look for structure in the blazers, bags and footwear. Add retro and boho jewellery and shoes. Add colour wherever you can find it. And you need flared crops. Read this!

Of course you can keep wearing your beloved EF and still make positive shifts in your style! I love Carter's pics -- they can give you some ideas for new silhouettes! I wonder about a long vest to top the dresses and tunics -- almost like the dress/coat combos so popular in the late twenties and thirties. Remember the sleeve scrunch as a way to use skin for structure, and I've also found that a well-placed true shoulder seam can work wonders!

How are your feet doing? Footwear might guide your journey, too.

El Cee - next to YLF, Une Femme...is the blog I read every day. I adore her style and the way she merges chic and boho lite.

Deborah - sorry to have caused you any distress I think because I'm an "all or nothing" kind of person, I thought this need for a style refresher meant a complete overhaul when in fact I just need to find a way to incorporate what I already love and some new tweaks so I look current. And yes...I still love my dark red items!

I have to confess that I was a little distressed thinking that you might be moving away from your beloved EF.

I think El Cee is on the money. I find EF pieces (and another confession, I spend quite a lot of time pouring over their website and videos) to be classic in a modern way, simply elegant, a touch alternate and somewhat timeless. The magic is that you can definitely spin the look your way. I am looking forward to seeing how you do this :)

BTW I thought of you the other day when I saw #1 and wondered if you were still loving your deep red/burgandy items?

One more thought Shannon -- you may want to go out and look at the blog "Une femme d’un certain age". The blogger (Susan), who is also a petite size, wears a lot of Eileen Fisher and styles the pieces in a Parisian Chic way. She also occasionally wears outfits that lean a bit toward boho-light. http://unefemme.net For her outfits go directly to http://unefemme.net/category/outfits

El Cee - what positively brilliant suggestions! And I adore visual aides Those two outfits are precisely what I'm after and I would absolutely wear them both. I like how you indicated EF can be my "canvas" - great way to look at it. Thank you :)

Kiki - nope, have never had an EF orphan. In fact, they are without a doubt the most worn items in my wardrobe.

Rachy - EF doesn't work for every body type that's for sure - but it sure works for me! So I'll wear it for you...you know, take one for the team :)

Roxanna - I need your color and you need my neutrals - lol! But you're right - it's about taking what we know works for us and skewing it into a style refresher.

Lisa - that's it!! I have GOT to get to Cha Cha Palace. Can you believe I've never been? I just checked out their website (which is dismal I'm afraid) but it does give me hope.

Carter - SQUEEEEE!!!! Thank you for posting you in these gorgeous outfits. This is pretty much what I'm looking for - and then I'll add my own twist with a retro handbag or chunky jewelry. Thank you.

Thanks so much all for the validation that I can make my old love and my new direction play nicely together :)

Shannon, I like this post because it is thought-provoking. I'm also in the middle of a style shift, but sometimes get frustrated because I can't find the things I like in my style. Thinking about using the things I already know work for me and using them to go in a different style direction is brilliant. For example, I was going through an extreme colour phase and have the J Crew No. 2 pencil skirts and Blythe silk shirts in a rainbow of colours. Now that I'm on more of a neutrals/luxe sophisticated kick, they are getting less wear. But you have inspired me to see if I can find ways to work them into my new direction, since they work so well for my figure.

Which sort of gives you to green light to be less price sensitive, since you know this is a proven value concept for you. You can spend most of your budget on your workhorse basics, and then find some value-priced, punchy fun accessories to mix it up.

Shannon -- I see absolutely no reason why you cannot do this. You have a knack for accessorizing and could take (for example) a simple, beautiful shift or sheath and go in different style directions with that garment. I do this with simple summer dresses. To go boho -- I add a funky medallion or fringe necklace or something made of wood, shells or natural elements and a wrist full of colorful bangles or leather bracelets. I then add some gladiator sandals and a fringed bag and I have boho light. Likewise, the same dress could go Parisian Chic with different accessories -- a simple beautiful clutch, some pretty flats and a couple of elegant bracelets. I think the EF pieces could be a very good canvas for your style goals. I see that there are some nice colors in the EF Spring line and lots of fabric options (like linen for a boho look). Here are a couple examples of what you could do to achieve a specific look using a basic solid summer dress.

The last two evenings I have gone shopping to try on a number of various items, including the three I'm looking to replace (black blazer, pencil skirt and simple frock). I thought I wanted to move past drape but I found NOTHING in stores that fit my petite apple body better than the Eileen Fisher items I already possess. I know EF is cut too generously for many, but for my current figure/shape, that cut works brilliantly.

So now I'm thinking of how to make EF work for my style going forward. Specifically, I was wanting less black/more color, structure, hints of boho/Parisian chic/retro. If I were to choose EF pieces in white and blue, that would add color. If I were able to find a couple of blazers locally that worked, that could be my structure. Hints of boho could be found with footwear and handbags locally, as well as hints of retro through jewelry/accessories. And maybe I can replace my black EF draped front dress which is positively raggedy due to love and wear with a duplicate? That dress fit me perfectly and worked so well with so many things.

So I guess I'm wondering if I can find less voluminous EF pieces with lighter colors that could combine my love of the EF comfort and fit, and still move into my new style moniker of Sophisticated Fun???

Would absolutely love your feedback on my ramblings :)
