Best with PT and other treatments. It does sound like you need the time and the flexibility (!) to follow a good back therapy program, and it's hard enough to do that with juggling work, or negotiating leave and work. I'm glad you could postpone travel and family issues because usually you have even less control over how that goes.

Good decision to postpone visiting your father. Self-care needs to be where it all starts sometimes. Hang in there.

Oh Anna! That is a blow.
I agree with what everyone has said, that you can't drive for five hours. As the owner of a dodgy back (caused by another surgery!) I know time in the car is almost the worst thing, and doubly bad as you won't be there long, and will be coming back again quickly, so it is two long drives in a short period.
Blame your doctor. Who could complain about doctor's orders?
*Hugs*

You may want to try an Osteopath instead of Physio. The one I see is actually trained as a physiotherapist too, but now practices Osteopathy exclusively (but can bill as a Physiotherapist for insurance purposes), I have had way more success for back problems with Osteopathy.

Don't recommend the long drive. If you must, you need to get up every hour and walk around for 15 minutes so you don't seize up.

I am so sorry, Anna, it really has been one thing after another for you lately, and that must feel awfully overwhelming.

As Angie mentioned, I have been dealing with the same kind of back problems for several years now, and I know that when the pain is pretty acute, it really isn't a good idea to drive for that long. Then again, sitting in an airplane seat isn't the best idea either (I don't know how long the flight out to your Dad would be, of course). Nor is schlepping around with bags or suitcases...

I hope PT can bring you some relief soon. I did a specialized back exercise programme at the hospital two years ago, which really helped. The thing is that you need to be vigilant about continuing doing the exercises at home (my specialist told me: "this is for the rest of your life"), but of course, sometimes you just don't get around to it. Pilates, swimming and walking are all recommended too (never overdo it while you are in an acute phase though, listen to your body!).

Osteopathy has helped for me more than once to get the pain back under control, so that might be worth looking into.

Strangely enough, or maybe not as strange as we would think, I've also found that when I'm stressed, my back acts up more quickly too. Unfortunately, life is full of stress and unexpected events for many of us, so it's not something you can avoid, but trying to find ways to help us deal with it and keep us sane are important.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you want to chat, Anna! In the meantime, please take care of yourself first! Like the other ladies have said: you have to feel better first before you can help your Dad (very tough to do and accept, I know...)

Hugs,

No 5 hour drive for you, missy. I'm sorry your dad is being needy...he's focused on his own woes and just wants you to come solve them...but you can't make yourself any worse and continue to function. He's going to have to wait. Yes, call out the Dr excuse.

Lower backpain is truly miserable.

You absolutely don't need to go to see your Dad (sitting on a plane and schlepping through airports would also exacerbate the problems, I'd think) unless you feel like that's the right thing for you to do.

Keeping fingers crossed that PT helps.

Even when my back is ok, a long drive is enough to give.ots of pain. You need to tell Dad that it just isn't possible to one see him right now. You MUST take care of yourself. The stress is probably not helping either.
There seems to comes time when one needs to let parents know that you are now an adult and care for them but have to set limits. You have a job and other responsibilities too.

It's awful. I don't think the long drive is a good idea either. I empathize with this problem because I had a few months of neck pain that painkillers didn't work on either and it was totally demoralizing. The physical therapy did help though, and I'm thinking it will for you too.

Maybe the flight is the way to go? Could he contribute to the cost? Even if you stay only a short while maybe it's worth it just to put the topic to rest when you're already stressed? I'm sensing you're alternating between feeling compelled by, and a little trapped by, the responsibility of caring for your dad.

Man. If a person doesn't have problems, they're probably dead. That's a bugger. My mother gets like that...

Some of you may have seen in my latest WIW, my back spasmed up. It's in the same area, lower back where my compressed discs are (L4-L5, L5-S1). My doctor doesn't think it's another compressed disc based on my symptoms. I lost a week of work, and due to being out of sick time, I'm now using precious vacation time. I've been given two kinds of painkillers and a muscle relaxant. The whole shebang makes me very tired and still doesn't quite kill all the pain. I will be doing physical therapy, so that should help.
I'm supposed to go home next weekend to see Dad. But I'm not sure if I can handle the long drive (5 hours). Flights are really expensive. I told this to Dad, and he seemed to be pressuring me to visit. His house was broken into in the spring and he wants my help to compile the final list of what's missing. But some of the stuff he's convinced is missing, I think he just can't find or remember where he put it. I more than a bit annoyed about him pressuring me to visit, he's bailed on visiting me on more than one occasion (including two Thanksgivings) due to various issues.
I was hoping now that summer is winding down I could get back on track with getting my life under control. But now I'm back at minus square now.
