It sounds like you have come up with a good solution for you.
I think I am down to only one item in my closet with tags still on, an old Nordstrom purchase so returnable. I’ve been looking for the right piece to go with it and I have a new idea. I recently returned another Nordstrom item I’d held a while when I picked something else to wear over it when it would have been the perfect occasion to wear it.
Only one item in the past year was an unreturnable mistake as I did not return it before the deadline-a red scarf with wonderful texture that was the wrong red. I might try toning down the color.
Often I am unsure of an item, but once I wear it it becomes a workhorse. And sometimes I have to wait for the right occasion. Or weather.

I am guilty of not committing to new pieces for awhile. Shoes are my biggest problem in that I put them through their paces in store and at home and they can feel like they will be comfortable but after wearing for 6 hours or so, they may suddenly pinch or rub. Jeans can stretch out more than I'd thought and not stay up without a belt.

"I think my challenge is getting excited about the possibility but not taking time to build outfits or plan looks, so the item joins the closet but doesn't get integrated, and then 2 months later I realize the fit was off, or the color not quite right and decide I've made a mistake".

*happy dance*

Thanks all for the support - just dropped a huge load of returns off at UPS. I'm definitely good at identifying the true "No's"!

I think my challenge is getting excited about the possibility but not taking time to build outfits or plan looks, so the item joins the closet but doesn't get integrated, and then 2 months later I realize the fit was off, or the color not quite right and decide I've made a mistake.

So I think it's a need for 3 things (and a time commitment to do them!):
1. Keep the tags on
2. Make them visible - front of the closet
3. Do the outfit building to make sure they work.

It's a cold rainy weekend - perfect for some outfit labs once I do Angie's assigned homework and clean-out the basics drawers. :-)

Oh, I get it completely! More and more, I am a serial returner too. I wait until I have an item home, have tried it on again at home, and have decided to wear it before I will cut the tags. I actually returned two things to Anthro last week that had been in my closet with tags on since September — yikes! Thankfully they granted me a store credit, which is fine by me. And I returned two NAS items to Nordstrom because they just didn’t work for me once the true wearing season came around — again, thankfully Nordstrom personnel seem to be understanding of that.

My biggest errors seem to be in overlooking some small issue of fit or how the item will play with outfits I think it will complete, or in buying for an elusive season that barely exists for us (I sat on my hands even though I was tempted by Angie’s Free People dress because that is NOT a summer dress for me).

I’m carrying these lessons, and a desire to purchase less and be more content with what I have, into the new year. So far, I have only one purchase to show for the new year and one possible one that’s being evaluated (both great deals, and the burgundy coat has already proven a winner).

My rule going forward is to hang new purchases on the valet rod in my closet, where they are front and center and I have to decide every day whether I will commit to this new item or not. It forces me into considering a decision pretty effectively. If I’m not excited to wear it, why? There is often a good reason. Maybe there is a prominent place you can put your new purchases too?

I think that is a great idea. I have had that happen too often where I tear off the tags and wear something once or twice and all of a sudden realize it just isn't right. Ugh. Definitely I find that if I don't want to wear it right away then it should just go back.

Great resolution and it is making me think I need to return that cape that I thought would be such a great statement piece that I got on sale. My problem is that I wear the same things over and over to work and don't have the social life or time to wear the things I really want to wear!

Good idea. I find online shopping very difficult. Also, like Sisi and others, I often don't know if something is going to work out until I actually wear it. I agonize a lot about purchases which means I miss out on some pieces.
I try not to buy too much from places where the return policy is exchange or store credit only. I might bend this rule if I am on vacation or the piece is really special.

I do agree. I find myself thinking that what I’ve bought will be perfect and then finding it isn’t.

For me there is something about getting bored with thinking about whether it is right or not for so long, that I’m better off sending it back, because I’ve used up any love for the item before I’ve decided if it is right or not.

That said, I do get FOMO with summer clothes. I’ve just received some Birkenstock’s that I ordered because last year by the time I decided I wanted some, all the right sized nice colours had gone. Even worse now I’m thinking I’m needing another pair of Birkenstock’s. May be this thread is timely for me!

Here returns are usually 14 days and for some places only for store credit. I definitely return for online shopping but rarely for instore.

sale goggles are real. as is mis-predicting clothing needs or wants.

I'm a serial returner. I love Nordie's because of their generous returns policy. this is really key when I purchase during the anniversary sale in the summer and get around to wearing the items in the fall/winter.

I like amazon prime for similar reasons, though it's only 30 days return. otoh, I don't purchase a lot of clothing here. mostly Hanes cotton pants and fun inexpensive belts.

late last year, I've adopted a policy to immediately return anything that does not make me smile right away. if I have any doubt at all, I have to return. surprisingly, it makes me feel lighter and I am less likely to compromise.

I prefer mail-order shopping. As long as I can return things by the deadline, I figure it's all good. I do not in any way expect everything I order to work out. There are often multiple waves of returns. I just ordered a ton of stuff, need to take a few hours to try it all on, in all the combos. But I got antsy & opened the box with 2 dresses. One of them is not what I pictured at all, so it's already gone back. I'm not quite sure about the other. I'll decide about it in the context of all the other stuff. The company who's stuff hasn't reached me yet, White Stuff, has the shortest return policy--14 days (which is the legal minimum here, as I understand). Other return periods are Desigual & Massimo Dutti, 30 days; Zalando,1 year (I think). Oh, and I got plaid pants on final clearance from Asos, so I'm stuck with those & hope I'll like them.

It's not a popular way to do things around here, but I when I'm trying to lose weight, I sometimes order things that are a size too small from places with long return periods, so I have a target to work towards right there in my face. Very superficial, but until I get my mojo back, I need tricks like this.

I cut tags on the outside of the clothing first time I wear it, inside tags first time I wash it.

I have a similar tactic - on a similar vein as Anchie, I leave the tags on until I am ready to wear it - and if the tags don't come off in short order, back it goes. I like your idea though - it also prevents shopping for instant gratification while not preventing shopping per se.

I mentioned earlier that I want to be more mindful about my shopping, most of which is done online. I’ve also noticed recently that I’ve been rethinking or changing sizes on several purchases.
- bought a Lafayette 148 suit and swore the pants fit, but 2 weeks later decided it’s better to go up a size and tailor down,
- pulled tags on an AT factory cardigan, then realized it’s just too heavy for me
- ordered a sweater dress and cardigan, but 3 weeks later still haven’t reached for them.

So, in an effort to be more mindful, I’m going to make myself put new purchases in a closet holding space for at least a week (date depends on return policy). This will give me a chance to put away the sales goggles and make sure this is something that really needs to be added to my wardrobe.

Anyone else have a similar problem? How do you address it?
