Hanna, I totally agree, it is a dilemma! You bring up a good point about the money made from positive advertising being put to negative use, such as paying off women. It's tough, and it's not the only situation like this. It makes me think of the Curves gym franchise, and the owner who regularly donates profits to pro-life charities. I know women who say they'd never go there, despite liking the idea of working out in an all-female atmosphere, because of the owner's politics.

I guess the fact is that we can't really control where our money goes or gets used for, if we choose to shop somewhere. For all we know there could be horrible people behind many of our favourite brands and shops! The best we can do is weigh the issues, make our own decisions and hope for the best.

In terms of the sizing, I admit that I don't care TOO much about that. Like Angie, I don't think sizes should be standardized or anything, and I think it's perfectly fine for a company to have a target consumer, and base its size range around that consumer. Not everything can fit everyone- it's not perfect, but it's the way the industry works. That said, a company that produces basics like AA, especially one that touts the ethical line so often, would definitely do well to expand its size range!

ele, i understand your point, and every debate i've ever had about AA comes down to supporting a socially responsible company with a socially irresponsible CEO. what a dilemma!

there are a lot of reasons i wish i could support AA more -- the ethically sourced materials, the use of diverse models, etc -- and the fact that it "glamorizes" these things really brings these kinds of efforts out in the public to a market that wouldn't generally be aware of them.

i guess i just don't like the fact that money i would like to think is well-spent on such endeavors also goes to line dov charney's pockets -- which means the women who take him to court for sexual harrassment get paid off, to some degree, with my moolah. there are many other sources for ethical, free-trade, organic clothing that doesn't have to be AA.

there's also, of course, the matter of the gawker article combined with the fact that AA sizes extremely small. the company has an aesthetic, it makes it very clear what its aesthetic is, and you can only partake of their responsible clothing if you fit into it. that doesn't seem fair.

these are totally my gripes about AA, of course, and ele is right -- looking at the big picture, there are lots of things to like in the company's practices. i'm just glad this has provoked so much discussion, because as a company i find it fascinating!

Hmm- Dov Charney is undeniably a pig. This is gross, but nothing compared to the judgments Abercrombie & Fitch has been throwing at its employees for years. I have some old school friends who work there in Design & Prod and the stories they tell are crazy.

While I don't go in for the whole AA aesthetic, I admit that I do buy some t-shirts there. I like the Deep V Summer Tee, which I have in seven different colours! The short sleeves are slim and longer than you normally find (not remotely capped, which I hate on tees), it fits me really well, and it comes in good colours.

In general, I get a bit upset when there's bad press surrounding AA. Not that it isn't deserved with the disgusting advertising and the CEO's personal antics, but it's just that there are so many good reasons to shop there, and I hate to think this other stuff is putting consumers off. Putting aside everything else, this is a company that uses responsibly sourced (and often organic) cotton, pays its employees a fair wage with good benefits, doesn't use child labour, and uses many alternative energy sources for its factories and shops.

I know not everyone will agree with me, and that's fine, but shopping (and living) ethically is very important to me, so I'm willing to overlook some other stuff.

I agree with Maya, that was my same reaction the first time I went into AA, and honestly, I've never been back.

Are we sure this Gawker article is real? I do not know this site, so I have no way of judging the authenticity of this report. I would hate to spread what turns out to be only gossip. But, if it is verifiable... then I don't mind spreading such facts.

What boggles my mind is that Dov Charney is possibly the most unattractive creature since the aardvark. Who is he to judge ANYONE? If he is firing people based on their appearance, I hope that means he is voluntarily stepping down as CEO.

Shana, I am young and I find AA clothing incredibly tacky. When I first heard of AA, I didn't know anything about it other than that it was anti-exploitation, so I decided to check it out. Even without knowing anything about the advertising and unsavory behavior of the CEO, I was left disappointed. The clothes are often just poorly fitted and constructed, as if they have never been on a real human body, and they are so hopelessly basic and unremarkable for the price.

yuck. I actually went into AA for the first time a few months ago. To be honest, I didn't really get it - most of the clothes reminded me of tacky 80's aerobics gear (a la Jane Fonda). I figured I was just not young & hip enough to appreciate the aesthetic. Or maybe I just wasn't pretty enough????
