Tanya, New Mexico is a nice state. There are lots of cultural opportunities (e.g., the artists' colony at Taos mentioned by Ana), historical sites (like Pueblo ruins), outdoorsy activities (such as skiing), etc. I don't know what the shopping is like in Albuquerque. If you love Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food, you'll love the dining available!

Ana, thanks for the support! Yeah, we'll be doing the whole long distance thing: we've been together for 5 years and will probably get married pretty soon after I graduate. So as soon as I'm done with grad school (hopefully about a year or so) I'll join him. Oh, and the city is Albuquerque. Anyone here knows anything about it?

Good luck you guys! Post the outfits you make out of your closet, I always enjoy seeing what you put together.

Tanya, sorry to hear about your boyfriend moving. Are you guys going to do the long distance thing? I've done that before and it's tough, but it can work. Where in NM is he moving to? I've driven through the state before, and it's really beautiful. It's not all artist colonies and cacti either, Taos is a nice city, kind of a resort town, and Santa Fe is pretty metropolitan (although not as much as NY or the East Coast, it's true).

Maya, I have done more shopping for myself in the last few months then I have done in years. But I'm at a point where I feel I have a working wardrobe and am done shopping for specific items. I had been focusing on my kids and husband for a while, and ended up with a closet full of cheap clothes that didn't work for me.

I'm excited about creating new outfits and mixing and matching my new pieces. So you and Tanya can count me in too. You have a creative element and you will probably get more emotional satisfaction from creating outfits from your current wardrobe then from shopping.

No, Maya, you don't shop the least of anyone here! We have no good shopping opportunities where I live, and I'm not familiar enough yet with mainstream stores' sizing and fit on me (AT, ATL, BR, etc.) to order confidently online. I guess it's good for the wallet, though... *sigh*

I'm not much of a stress shopper. I really think I might do the least shopping of anyone here, which surprises me because I always thought I was kind of out of control. I'll only indulge in things I don't need if they're cheap or once in a lifetime opportunities, like my H&M Marimekko stuff. I think that's why it's so hard to bring myself to put in the effort into a shirtdress. I don't need it and I doubt I'd get much mileage out of it. I also definitely will not buy something if I don't have anything to go with it.

If anything, shopping under stress just stresses me out more.

I don't think I need a replacement, nor do I think it will be that hard. I think it might sound harder for you guys because you seem to shop as a hobby/stress reliever more than I do. I shop because I did a wardrobe overhaul not too long ago and I'm still working on building it up again. There is going to come a time where I feel like my wardrobe is complete and I don't need anything new, and at that point, I will probably work more with what I have and maybe supplement it with some accessories. I don't really enjoy shopping much anymore, so it won't be like I'm giving up something I really loved.

Very good points Shiny and Ana!

In my case, shopping is stress induced only partially. I am currently in extremely stressful situation with my grad school and it will only get worse till I'm done. I am also without my ballroom dancing for the past two years so shopping sort of became a substitute hobby. Finally, my BF just decided to accept a great job offer that will make him move to NM starting September, so this brings a bunch of new issues: we'll have to be separated till I graduate, once I do graduate I'll have to move there and find a job there, and I'm type of person who likes super urban environments such as NY the best and I'll need to find a roommate for our pretty new apartment we just moved in :(

Anyway, these are partially the reasons, but the rest is that I simply enjoy a lot fashion, shopping, clothes and such, it's something I have always been drawn to.

Shopping in my closet shouldn't be a problem at all, I have a lot of stuff plus quite a few items I bought for this summer that I haven't even worn yet. I will concentrate on : editing mu closet- donating and consigning stuff, alterations, and build up my accessories a bit. Accessories are really the most neglected wardrobe component in my case.

So no worries please, I think I should be able to do this and come out of it with (hopefully) more knowledge about clothes/fashion and myself. We'll see how it goes- I shall certainly enjoy the challenge!

Shiny, you bring up some good points and I can totally relate! When I get stressed I really like to go shopping. Luckily I don't go nuts and run up debt, I try to stick to cash on hand, because I know people that do run up debt like that and it's scary. I'm sure there are "better" things I could do like exercising or something, but I also agree with you that it does make me feel a little better to get dressed in the morning and do my hair and feel put together, too, and I'm sure the shopping sort of feeds into that. I think as long as you're responsible and don't put yourself into debt, stick to your budget/cash on hand, that shopping is a valid form of dealing with stress. It's really demonized ("consumerism" and all that), but I think people tend to have their one thing that they go overboard on when they're dealing with stressful situations, whether it's exercising, or shopping or smoking or whatever it is that they do. Mine happens to be shopping.

Tanya and Maya, if you tend to do this, then you need to think about doing something different to replace shopping as your way of dealing with stress or else you won't be successful at staying away from shopping because your coping mechanism will be gone and there won't be anything in its place. Does this make sense?

Congratulations on quitting smoking! My mom smokes and I know how tough it can be to quit, I wish she would. And I'm sorry you have to go through this health thing with your family. I definitely know how stressful that can be.

I was thinking maybe you all could work on building up your accessories collection or something if you want to shop in your closet more? They seem to really transform an outfit and make it feel "finished." Although, you all seem like you have a lot of great accessories already. I tend to neglect accessories, myself. That's what I'm going to try to focus on I reach my "minimum" summer wardrobe (I have a serious dearth of suitable summer clothing right now).

Good luck you guys!

I have been shopping wayyy to much lately. In a frenzied manner. I enjoy shopping and always have, but lately it's gotten out of hand. My initial excuse was the weight I lost last year - it is true I had to replace most of my Spring closet, because very few things fit. But, it's more than that.

My own psychoanalysis is pretty simple: when I'm under stress in my life, I tend to shop as a distraction. Other people might abuse substances or kick the dog, I go shopping. (Okay I also used to smoke like a chimney when stressed... but I quit smoking nearly two years ago so that's no longer an option!)

I would prefer not to say why I'm under stress lately, because I come to YLF as an enjoyable distraction, a place I don't have to think about it; I'll just say I've been dealing with health problems of a family member and leave it at that.

I think there's also been this magical-thinking element of... "gee as long as I look snappy everyday, everything else will hold together and things aren't going to unravel further." If I didn't have YLF lately, I might just stay in my PJ's all day and never take a shower and just cave into the stress and never get out of bed. And I can't do that. Need to be strong right now!

Okay that was more than I really wanted to say on that topic...

Although, maybe there is an element of truth in that? Not necessarily the shopping part, but the looking snappy every day? When life gets stressful and you have that urge to just curl up into a ball and wallow in depression, it can be helpful to focus on the simple things, like getting dressed. It's self-care.

You don't need to shop and spend money to do that. I like the idea of shopping in your closet. I could do that for awhile myself.

Hugs to you both, Maya and Tanya!

No worries Ana, I'm not going to disappear from the boards at all, quite the opposite. I'll be glad to help other members shop and try to shop within my closet with your help. waiting to arrive plus I'm planning to get those few more I described, so there will be plenty to post about. I'll announce the official ban begging date soon:)

Tanya, it would definitely be great to have a teammate! When I last did this, I just stopped looking at clothes online and that helped tremendously. You definitely have enough clothes to shop inside your closet. It's not as bad as it sounds.

I'm also still going to allow myself accessories and used clothes, but nothing new. My 6pm.com shoes will be my last purchase for a long time to come.

Well, sounds like you have figured out a cause! It's good to know why we feel the way we do. Strangely, I feel opposite: when I have no money I like and want so many things and once I can get some of them the balloon usually explodes . I am thinking on going on a shopping ban myself - really have too many things. I have a little chunk sum to spend on a couple of items now, I'm still trying to figure what I'll actually get from my want list that's huge ( I'll probably get the Cole Haan shoes, citron clamdiggers and that ArdenB black tunic I posted a while ago). Afterwards, I'll limit myself to only spending up to $20 monthly ( for a random accessory so I don't feel totally deprived) and whatever money I earn on consignment. I'll focus on shopping (and editing ) my closet. We can be each other moral support for this! I'll probably start in about two weeks or so.

OK, I hate psychoanalyzing myself so it took me a long time to muster up the will to respond to this, but I think I figured out why I'm so down about shopping lately. I think I'm in such bad shape financially that I'm convincing myself I look bad in certain things so I don't feel tempted to buy them. Obviously when you're out of a job, ANY purchase is really out of your league. I shouldn't be shopping at all really, and I knew that. Angie's post today convinced me that I need to just stop. Stop looking at store websites. Stop reading fashion blogs (except this one because I'm addicted). Stop digging for coupons. I'll just have to learn how to be innovative with what I have.

Maya, Do you think there could be any connection between your mood and leaving NYC and going back home? Do you have mixed emotions about this decision?

You had not mentioned the move back to NJ until a few days before you moved. THen once you moved your posts started to get a little depressing.

There is nothing wrong with taking a break from shopping. I'm not sure of the retail cycle, but maybe you're just tired of looking at the sameoldsameold. Know what I mean, Jellybean?

Maya, Antje is totally on target. You have a lot going on in your life with trying to find a job and moving around. When things get out of line with your expectations, it is hard to have an objective outlook on even simpler things.

You are beautiful and have so much confidence for such a young age! I wish I had it half as together as you do when I was your age! Take a break if it frustrates you. You can always just go browse. Sometimes I have more fun that way then when I'm on a quest for something.

I agree with other's comments about shopping in your closet. You have some wonderful outfits you've posted here and I bet you have more up your sleeve!

Oh Maya, that sounds really frustrating. I honestly think you should consider taking a break. The fact is, you don't "need" new clothes (none of us here do), so if shopping doesn't give you joy and enhance your sense of style and self-confidence right now, then I really don't see the point.

I also wonder if there is more going on. On a different post this morning you talk about your "monstrous butt". Now, all of us who've seen your beautiful self in the pictures know that there is nothing monstrous about your butt or any other part of your body. But sadly it seems like you don't really know or believe it. So it seems only natural then that shopping isn't fun for you. I remember phases in my life when shopping wasn't fun not just because I had trouble finding things I liked, but also because I was hyper-critical and didn't like what I saw in the mirror no matter what I put on. Maybe you need to gain back a little more lovin' of your shape, before you can enjoy shopping again? You mentioned you wanna start exercising, which is so perfect (and mind you I'm not saying you should lose weight, but exercising often helps one appreciate the body one has). Sorry if I'm going "Oprah" on you or something. I just get really bummed when you berate your body, and hope it doesn't get too much in the way of your enjoyment of fashion!!

And by the way, those shorts are super cute

I can totally relate - that's how I feel about most shopping trips (yup, I'm definitely an odd one out here!).  I hope a break helps you feel better.  Trying to find a job is really stressful too (I spent 3 months in jobless limbo earlier this year, so I sympathize) so I'm sure it's not helping. {{{Maya}}}

The shorts look really cute!

Maya I totally understand how you feel. I too have shopping fatigues from time to time. I need to be in the mood to have a successful shopping trip. If I force myself to do it, I'd be disappointed and depressed at the end.

Why don't you just shop in your closet for a while and see how you can assemble good outfits with existing pieces, eventually you'll recover from the fatigue and enjoy shopping again.

I'm in a break now myself. I donated my monthly clothing budget to the China Earthquake relief fund so I can't shop this month. I've been enjoying shopping in my closet instead and found out that I have so many clothes that I don't really need to shop for a while.

I know how you feel Maya. My last shopping trip was a bit like this too. I never did find the things I really wanted (red heels, dark denim skirt, and fitted Tanya tops), but I got some other things. I, however, can't take a break from shopping, because I've gotten rid of a bunch of old clothes and need some new ones so I have something to wear. At least there are sales this weekend. It's back to the big mall for me.

I'm sure everyone's tired of this, but mine will be short:

I got these shorts at my new go-to store, Lord and Taylor:

http://www.lordandtaylor.com/g.....3&c=1

Mine hit lower down on the knee than in that picture, which I think looks better. The front rise was nice and high. Only problem is that the back gapes, but that always happens to me and it's an easy enough fix. They're nothing fancy but they do what I need them to.

I went to Arden B to try on that tunic that we have all been talking about for weeks, and it was just awful on me. It was clearly designed for someone much taller than I am. The belt loops were almost around my hips and the overall length made it more of a dress than a tunic on me. It wasn't fitted enough without the belt either. I could have had it shortened and had the belt loops removed and reattached, but I just can't bring myself to put that much effort into something that's not really going to serve me in the long run. I also realized after trying it on that my enthusiasm for the shirtdress-over-jeans look has kind of plummeted. I still love it on other people, but on me it won't work without a lot of effort which I am not willing to put in. So I think I have closed the chapter on that.

Then I went to NY & Co for some belts, and as usual, they only had M-XL, so I didn't get anything.

After that it was off to J Crew to see if they had that ladybug belt (they didn't) and to see how the clamdiggers look. I suspected I wouldn't like them but I thought I might surprise myself. To my relief, they looked just as bad as I had expected (I didn't want to like them because then I'd be tempted to buy them for $85!...though I kind of did want to like them because it would have really boosted my mood).

To conclude, this is how almost all my shopping experiences go lately, and it's kind of depressing. I'm feeling all shopped out. Does anyone else ever feel like this? I spent 85% of the time feeling frustrated, and 15% of the time feeling satisfied but not really thrilled, like today. I liked my shorts and all but I'm not really dying to wear them or anything. I got them mostly for practicality's sake since it gets so hot here. And everything else was just a letdown. Either my size isn't in stock, or the product isn't available, or it just doesn't look good. I've been carrying around this gift card I got for months hoping to use it on something fabulous, perhaps something I normally wouldn't buy because it's too expensive or not that practical. But it just sits there at the bottom of my purse.

I think I might need a break from shopping, and now would be a good time for it, since I still haven't found a new job yet. It kind of freaks me out because I have NEVER felt that way before. There has never been a time in my life where I just hated the idea of shopping, but lately it feels like more of a chore than something fun. I am guessing most of you couldn't imagine taking a break from shopping, so I guess I feel a bit funny posting about that here :x

Sorry if that was a depressing read!
