The Macy closest to me is a little like your Nordstrom; I would not wish its selection on my worst enemy. How can the buyer choose such ugly stuff? Does he or she want that branch to fail?

For NAS, I probably won't venture to a b&m except for returns. Among other things, I ordered a white gear jacket, a light gray unlined jacket, and a deep blue 1/2 sleeve T-shirt -- so nothing particularly particularly F/W! In fact, I'm wondering if that knit jacket will be too light in color and weight for winter. I've never been thrilled by the Caslon blazers (and hope springs eternal!), so maybe this one will go back anyway.

I agree that Nordstroms vary from region to region. I shop in Philly and DC Nordies and they definitely have very different merchandise.

Marley! Eleven stores within 40 miles!? Lucky girl!

Peri - I soooo know what you mean! I have 11 Nordstroms stores within 40 miles of where I live - and each one is different. I used to get so frustrated when I would go in one, expecting to find something that I'd seen in another, and it would be nowhere to be found - and the store had no intention of ever getting it in! Pretty weird - but I guess the way that Rae explains it, it all makes sense!

I find that all the stores are really different. When I lived in the Bay Area and had lots of time to shop, I would go to different stores and check out all the different merchandise. They really stock what works in each market. Online is good since it does have everything and even some online exclusives but I miss that touchy-feely you get with seeing stuff in person.

I guess I wasn't very clear! The main point wasn't winter in July...the main point was that this Nordstroms is just nothing special. I've thought that before, that it really doesn't live up to Nordstroms reputation. The departments are small, very few selections, and the lingerie fitters are really bad.

All the staff besides lingerie is really friendly and helpful, it's the store itself. I don't know why that is, but when I read about how great Nordstrom is it's a little disappointing to know "mine" doesn't live up. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

But, as Suz says, I've got online. so it's all okay.

This is the first time I have bought anything out of season - meaning I can't wear it right now. Wile it is so hard to shop in July for fall, at least for spring and summer, I thought the best pieces were out by March and was pretty unimpressed with any of the new pieces after that.

I can see what you mean. The buyers for each store are different, and they should be tailoring what they pick to your specific area. Even around here, The Grove and Santa Monica stores stock different items from my Westside store (tourists versus locals), and we carried a lot of lightweight items since our winters are not that cold.

I totally understand shopping for winter stuff right now (I'm in the south as well).

If you like the colors now, I've say go ahead an get the scarf. That way you can wear it as long as possible in our short falls and winters.

You know, in the past I could never imagine doing this, either. But this year, for whatever reason, it is making a lot more sense. I feel as if by buying a few judicious purchases (in my case, mostly footwear) I will get a head start on my fall wardrobe. I guess it helps that I know some actual needs (including boots) so these are items I'm going to have to buy in any case.

Jules, if you are right, then you'll be able to guess the trends, too, by looking at their daily top sellers during the sale. (Maybe only those with access to the sale can do that...not sure.) But I will say, it has been an interesting exercise. There are actually a lot of basics represented on the bestsellers (so far) -- meaning real basics, as in underwear and PJs. But also quite a lot of juniors' wear. I am wondering if some moms aren't getting ahead on their daughters' back-to-school wardrobes. The sale would be great for that.

Peri, you can always order on line, and return for free, so you're in a pretty good spot even if your local store is not the best. At least by grumpy Canadian standards, LOL!

I'm in Canada and can't even imagine trying on sweaters and coats right now! And it hasn't even been that hot this summer. The thought just has no appeal.
Side thought - I wonder if Nordies uses the sale as a way to gauge what trends are going to catch on and what they should order more of?

I have a hard time shopping for fall and winter in the heat of July. I live in the Pacific NW and we wait so LONG for it to warm up that it just doesn't feel right. I am usually uninspired unless I have something I really need, like shoes, boots, bag etc. those items are fun to shop for year round. Sweaters and coats not so much.

I went yesterday just to see what was going on...I don't have a card so couldn't shop.

The store was no more crowded than usual for Friday mid day. They had several small curtained off areas, but not many people in them. I peeked through the curtains and the selection seemed pretty small. I think the idea of winter clothes in July does not translate well in the South.

I did ask a sales person if the cashmere blend scarf I want would be on sale and she said no. Stink! So I think I will just buy one now...she said the colors change with seasons and I like the colors now.
