Just to give an update, it has been super hot in Germany so I wish I had packed more short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts, and could have left some of the outerwear at home. I did add a couple of sleeveless shirts at the last minute, which was a good idea. I seem to have been climbing up and down hills on cobblestones, so both Caspians and Born Arlettas came in handy (and no heels, thankfully!)

Today on the train I noticed a lot of younger women wearing silky, loose-fitting trousers ( sort of like track pants but in very airy, brightly patterned fabrics). Seems perfect for the weather.

Super jealous of your travel capsule, very together and practical and trendy!!! I am struggling with packing for a 3 day trip, going to a formal outdoor event that will be cool in the morning, but scorching in the afternoon... very difficult to dress appropriately yet not be sweating after lunch... Also thunderstorms may arrive, but still with the high temps. Ah, such is adventure and life! Have fun on your trip!

We went to Rüdesheim in December and really enjoyed the cable car trip up the mountainside. The town was all rather crowded with Christmas market stuff when we were there but it was very picturesque. My brother-in-law has been there in summer and says it is very nice. We didn't take a boat ride but we took the train line which runs along the river on our way from Darmstadt to Liege, and it was lovely! I'd love to go back there in summer. My husband was not impressed with the Christmas crowds.

Such great advice, thanks, Astrid! And thanks for the beautiful photos!

What I find interesting is that the area where I live (north of New York State) seems to be somewhat similar - the weather is nearly identical right now, we have nice boat tours on the lake, some easy hikes, and lots of little wineries that make nice rieslings and gewurztraminer. And everyone dresses quite casually, too.

I am really looking forward to comparing my experience here to that in Germany.

Just like I thought. I went to school in Bingen and the family lives just next to it. Rheinfels and Marksburg Castle are great, I think that should be enough castles for the visit (although there are many more of course). #1/2 shows Bingen on the right with Rüdesheim on the left and the view down the river (typical little after coffee walk). If you live in Boppard you can take the train to Bingen (that's on the same side) and start your tour from there. If you want to visit Rüdesheim and the Drosselgasse and you have some time to spare I would recommend making a little detour to the Niederwalddenkmal before you start your boat tour back. You can buy a ticket in Bingen where the ferry trip to the other side, the trip up to the monument and the trip down after the walk to Assmannshausen are all included. So when you get to Rüdesheim you can have a walk through Drosselgasse before you take the ropeway up(#3-5). From there you can talk a walk (it's signposted) of maybe an hour (with some nice observation points on the way, see #6) and then take the ropeway down to Assmannshausen (#7). You can start the boat trip from there too, all the boats starting in Bingen usually stop there as well. Although you should check departure times ahead to make sure your timetable works out.

You can eat more or less everywhere and get local food and wine (just not in the Drosselgasse, that's overpriced) when you look for a 'Straußwirtschaft' - many vintners have one where they serve food and their own wine in the main season. The food is usually simple but good. The boat trip is much nicer if you can sit on the roof deck, so depending on weather you need to bundle up! It can be quite windy and cold on the river (and the sun doesn't always come into the valley). And don't wear heels, at least not if you're planning to walk anywhere in the villages. Some of them have very nice historic city centres with timbered houses and cobblestone.

You don't need any special clothes or shoes for what I suggested btw, I just wear comfortable sneakers and jeans for a walk like this. Same for the castles, you should be fine with sturdier sneakers. And the crossbody bag looks good too. In our neck of the woods you don't see many people with clutches in general. Even people going out in the evening for a glass of wine and a nice view on the river wouldn't dress up very much. All very casual and practical.

ETA

If you need some help figuring out something specific, just ask.

This sounds like a great capsule, Makrame. In sheer numbers (and even types of items) it is quite similar to what I took for my recent travels; I was gone for a month but could do laundry. However, the weather conditions were more varied and I had to prepare for that.

Hi Astrid,

Great, glad to hear this is an area you are familiar with!

I will have 2-3 days between the conference in Freiburg and giving a talk near Nuremberg so I plan to take a train to Boppard, where I booked a hotel for a couple of days. Next day I was going to try to go up the river by train (I think it is to Bingen or Rudesheim, if I remember correctly) and take the KD boat tour down the river. I was thinking of visiting Rheinfels and Marksburg Castle and also just wondering around some of the smaller villages along the Rhine. If I find any places to taste local wine that would be great, too. Any advice or suggestions for good, not-too-touristy places to eat or visit would be much appreciated!

Boat tour on the Rhine and castles/ruins sounds just like where I'm coming from. Can you tell us where you have planned to go exactly? If I'm right I could maybe give some tips.

I'm on the phone right now, so I'm going to comment on the capsule later on.

Sounds like a great capsule to me! This is similar in weight to what I brought to London, with similar temps, so I think you're right on the money.

Are you comfortable wearing the raincoat when it's not raining? If not, I'd bring a trench as well. I wore mine every single day in England (it was waterproof enough for the typical light drizzle there).

Shoes: I wore my Arlettas for most of the super walking-intensive days. I had also brought my lace up mid calf boots (with 2" block heel) but found that the totally flat Arlettas were better for balance on the very uneven cobblestones. They were great on the day we walked 28K steps according to J's fit bit. So I'd say bring the Arlettas!

ETA: I did have a clutch in London since I had formal events to attend. I don't usually bring one but I liked having the fun bag option. Mine has a cross body strap that is detachable and is not tiny so I actually used it as a day bag a couple of times. I wouldn't personally take a clutch with no strap when walking around an unfamiliar city, even if just going to dinner. Too risky IMO. (Although these days I'm paranoid about bag thieves!)

This seems like a great and practical travel capsule, Makrame!
Most of your items are lightweight and packable, you've got variety but a reasonable amount of clothes, you've got good walking shoes: it seems like you're prepared for just about anything!
Those Eddie Bauer raincoats are the greatest. I took my similar one (with a detachable liner) to Paris in March, and it was perfect for the drizzly days.

Looking at Carter's gorgeous travel capsule and reading the thoughtful advice on her thread has been very helpful in trying to finalize my capsule for Germany. I am leaving soon, and the temps are expected to be 48-55 low, 65-75 high. I am aiming for semi-minimalist packing - on the one hand, I am traveling around by train so don't want heavy luggage, on the other hand, I am not planning to do laundry and would prefer not to re-wear tops. I am planning to take mostly lightweight tops with sleeves that would hopefully only need toppers in the evening.

The plan is for 5 days of work (conference and presentations, most likely smart casual is fine) and 5 days of travel/sightseeing, including a boat ride on the Rhine with some light hiking to castles and castle ruins. I also have to bring running shoes because the conference has an 8K planned - I will probably take really old shoes and throw them out afterward but I might also use them for hiking.

An earlier iteration of the capsule is here http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....or-germany

Also, a couple of nice finds - Kipling Europa bag is going to be my main travel bag (crossbody, lightweight, can fit lots of stuff in there); I also bought a couple of lightweight, packable Athleta pants made out of their "Featherweight" fabric - Prima capri and Andale ankle pants. My only concern is that these are cropped - not sure if that is a problem but I think the ankle pants might be good for the plane.

Bottoms: 2 pairs of Athleta pants in dark grey color; GAP real skinny black pants for "work days", VC tube skirt either in grey/black thin stripe or black/white rugby stripe. I want to bring one more pair of long pants and cannot decide between GAP grey khakis or GAP real straight jeans.

Tops: 2 cotton-silk shirts with long sleeves, 3 long-sleeved t-shirts, 2 short-sleeved t-shirts, 1 or 2 lightweight cotton sweaters, Icebreaker merino wool short-sleeved t-shirt.

Dresses: black dress with 3/4 sleeves and blue faux-wrap sleeveless dress with lightweight blue cardi. I am also tempted to bring a silk sleeveless top with a lightweight coral cardi - not sure if that is wise (I will post a photo in the evening).

Toppers: silver raincoat (can use it as an extra layer if it is really cold), blue quilted moto jacket, black knit blazer. Not sure if I need another topper - I wish I had a lightweight neutral jacket like the ones Parsley suggested on Carter's thread but I don't have anything like that (no utility jacket etc.).

Accessories: infinity scarf, probably another larger scarf that can serve as a wrap, crossbody bag. I am not taking any leather purses - I am wondering if I should bring a clutch in case I am having dinner out etc.

Shoes: Josef Seibel "Caspian" sneaker, running shoes, DV Giya black flats; maybe Born Arletta oxfords.
