April I now have to wear Altra Escalante. Altra's are zero drop and a wide toe box, soft on the foot yet stiff so as not flare up bunions and neuromas, a challenging combo to find. I sized up, a whole size, they run short, and also got them in wide to accomodate the bunions, but the regulars might have also worked. They are "gearish" but streamlined and lightweight so not bulky. My feet are happy in them.(I put metatarsal pads under the insole to help too). In looking for a link for you, I see they come in a lovely floral as well: https://www.altrarunning.com/s.....m_content=

Actually I have the 2.5 they are a little slimmer https://solemates-shoes.com/pr.....1619947586

Now I want those florals in an 8.5 wide :)

Just adding that the combo of wide toe box but narrow at the heel and also the cloth top that just seems to let everything be where it wants instead of squishing toes together has been very good.

I finally found a brand that works for my fussy feet...high arch, wide foot: Sole Bliss. Love their sneakers...I have 3 pairs now...burgundy, black and white ones and two pairs of boots...taupe and black. Highly recommend. Customer service has been great.

Had forgotten all about this thread, but my Oesh sneakers have by now been passed along (comfy but could not bear the look) as have my:
Lems (same issue)
No Bull florals (high tops without a zipper: impossible to put on)
and several pairs of Allbirds (for sizing issues).

Mommoo, will have a look at the Keens - thanks for the suggestion!

Hello April! I empathize with your current situation as I tried cortisone shots, sclerosing injections (7 per foot), and custom orthotics. The only solution that worked was surgery and it took three to rid myself of the neuromas.

I now need to wear shoes with a rigid sole and they also must accommodate orthotics. I finally found a pair by Drew Shoes that works. After continued pain, my Podiatrist noted shoes with too flexible of a sole were aggravating the former neuromas sites.

The style I purchased is Ruby. Another brand with rigid soles or rocker bottom soles is Dromedaris.

Sorry, I hadn't realized that the Alegrias were that bulky. If your amazing sock collection doesn't help, then nothing will. Why is it so hard to find comfortable AND stylish shoes? So frustrating!

I only wear Camper, Born, and FitFlop but I have different foot issues

Thanks, Jorja. Yes, many of the shoes that turned out not to work for me were good fits for the Barking Dog writer. Different issues, I guess. I love that she focuses on fussy-foot styles, though, and hope springs eternal!

Elle; it's the overall bulkiness of the Alegrias that irritates me. It is a little hard to tell from the Find, but they are immensely more bulky than my Franco Sarto oxfords which are metallic green BTW.

Oh, and when my socks might show, they are never plain. I seem to have lost some of my Finds, however. You get the picture, though.

Clarks and Naturalizer are comfortable for me- but I just wear their heels, not sneakers. Nike and Saucony for runners, but they're purely gear shoes, not daily shoes.

DF - I hate when retailers say a 37 is a 7 and a 38 an 8. In reality, a 37 is a 6.5 and a 38 a 7.5.

Not sure why European sizing doesn't more often include half sizes.

Comfort has to trump style. Could you perhaps replace the laces of the Alegria with colored or ribbon laces to soften the look a bit. Or wear them with fun patterned/polka dot/lace socks?

I have problem feet, and even athletic shoes are not my perfect answer although Brooks Addictions come closest. My Dansko clogs are no longer all day shoes.

Amazon just delivered the Alegrias yesterday. I don’t want to like them because they are so masculine, but darn, they are soooo comfortable, maybe even more than the Josef Seibels which are even more masculine. (Maybe this is why men have fewer foot problems?) They can be worn with straight leg jeans and probably anything else that looks okay with clogs.

FWIW, the Alegrias list their 37 as 7-7.5, whereas most places say a 37 is 6.5-7. Maybe it is that extra half size that keeps these shoes off my bunions and from squeezing my left little toe?

Just for kicks I also added two more pairs of my most comfy shoes to demonstrate that comfort doesn’t necessarily have to mean comfort brands; they just need to fit one’s own idiosyncrasies.

April, if the Oesh shoes seem like they might work, you could also look at Altras. They are mostly real gear shoes with a few "lifestyle" models in the mix. But they are zero drop and wide toebox. Worth considering for when you need to log serious miles. There are also lots of barefoot/minimalist brands out there with a "foot shaped" toe box if you are open to a thin, flexible sole.

I feel you on the fussy feet. I've had bunions before but two years ago I also developed a neuroma..healed now, but can't squish my feet into anything narrow any more... and the also, the bunions keep getting worse. My always favorite flat shoes like Blundstones and Frye's didn't work any more. In google searching I found a brand called https://oeshshoes.com/ Oesh. They are zero drop and make a shoe that I can wear. There are some styles that you can put an insert in, like the Elite clog and also their sneakers. I've bought several over a few years and they are very good on customer service. The combination of a thick sole that is gentle on the foot, not too bendable and wide enough to accommodate all the toes is hard to find. How I wish someone would make a chelsea boot. The Birkenstock one is nice, but the soles are too hard for me. Good luck with your search.

You should check Nike or Skool Skate Sneakers. I like both of them in white.

Shiny, socks are a whole other problem. If they fit correctly, they squeeze my feet side-to-side such that my neuromas start wailing. If I size up, they slide down and wad up inside my shoe. So I have started preferring shoes meant to be worn without socks. And I have the wool Allbirds.

Laura, I had not wanted a running shoe because the molded insoles often create new pain, and because I don't want a gearish athletic shoe. But I must remember to leave no retail stone unturned.

Thanks, Inge - will check out Mephisto.

TW -- that's a new brand to me, and I'll be happy to give it a go.

Of course, we've all had that frustrating (and expensive) situation where by the time you know the shoe won't work for you, you've worn it for a full day and can no longer return it.

April do you have the tree or wool runners? Have you tried wearing them with socks?
