Aida, I did consider a lighter coat, too. I have not found the perfect light (or possibly red) one yet, though, and I need something ASAP. For the price, I can take my time and hunt down another color next year - for a quick fix, it does seem like the biggest assortment is in black.

Angie, I'm glad you don't see the dropped waist in the model-less pic! The modeled pic is what came up when I entered the style name the seller gave me... not out of the realm of possibility that it is incorrect. I DID size up to a 6 after studying the KM size charts and asking for measurements from the seller. Seems right, since the chart says a US 6 is a UK 10/ EU 38, which are my normal sizes.

Rae, is that the same black coat - on the model and in the photo without the model? It doesn't look like a dropped waist in the photo without the model.

HUGE Karen Millen fan!!! Sizes do run small though. Did you size up?

For what it's worth, I almost NEVER wear my double-breasted coats unbuttoned; they just flap around way too much. If I do, I usually have the belt tied I'm also finding I don't like to wear my black wool coat as much because I kind of turn into a wall of black with my (nearly) black hair, often dark scarf, often black footwear, and dark/denim bottoms. AND usually dark purses. My lighter coats are getting more use this season.

Though I must say, the vibe of this coat seems perfect for you and I can't wait to see it on you Hope the waist is at the right spot!!

Well, I actually won the auction at a ridiculously low price - $90 shipped for a $600 Karen Millen (I believe I remember the brand as Angie-approved for quality?), so I can definitely resell it if it doesn't work out.

Angie, don't disown me! I went for it based on the waist definition in the auction picture (runs from spanking)...

Rae, I always love the photos where women are pictured with their coats flying open but in real life, I am usually too cold. However, sometimes I wear them like that and a coat being double breasted doesn't faze me. Sometimes I will "tilt" a coat so that it is more forward on the shoulders and the sides fly out and back a bit at the bottom. Experiment with an open double breasted coat and see what you think.

Interesting, I did not think of #1 as having a dropped waist. I finally figured out how to take the pic from the listing... duh, screenshot... I must be losing brain cells from all this rash medication. The buttons seem to come down lower than the actual waist in this shot - does that make a difference? I kinda want it to work out, because it'd be a fantastic deal...

My current coat is double-breasted, too. Looking back now, I don't remember ever really wanting to wear it open that badly. Ack, theoretical shopping is hard.

I'm not sure whether the dropped waist is a win in #1. Also, I do not think that the coat will look that great open.

Sorry to be a mare :(. I have been coat shopping with clients all season and coat fits are very much on the fore front of my mind.

A fellow "wuss" here weighing in. I just read your other thread and just want to offer a few thoughts.

One, are you ok with wearing a double-breasted coat open? I feel like this is a RATE look and you have to be ok with the belt dangling and the extra-big front placket flapping. Some people love it, and I'm trying to get used to it with my coat but it doesn't come easy for me.

Second, now that I live in the Valley of the Sun, I am constantly amazed how a black jacket is SO much warmer in the cold sunshine than a white jacket made of exactly the same fabric. My white windbreaker has not been cuttin' it lately......brrrrrr!

Third, you look fantastic in black! Not just ok, but fantastic. So while I might choose another dark color for myself, black would be warm and beautiful on you (I noticed you said both coats were available in black).

But I will love you no matter which coat you choose!

From something Rachylou? said I realized that all my favorite coats have no belt.
Ya feel less like the South Park characters.

Also, I think military is more of a utilitarian/masculine vibe than it is classic/feminine.

I think you'd look fabulous in this coat, Rae, and I like both the styling and length of the coat. I took a quick look at the other two (some of the photos were gone) and I did like the stone one, but if you like the trench style and no belt, this new one may be perfect and in black, too.

Still, I keep going back to that stone-colored one. There's just something about it. Do you think it's too classic? I vote for one of those two (stone/black from the first link or this one here). I hope you get it!

I'm following an auction for this black coat below, considering it as an alternative to the ones I posted yesterday (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-real-coat). Although I like the other coats a lot, I'm considering this one because:
- the front closure seems like it would work equally well open, trench style, or fully closed
- looking at my work wardrobe, I'm thinking black would go with more things (ETA some wardrobe pics)
- this one has no belt for me to deal with
- it's cheaper (I know, but I spent a lot this year before I realized my other wool coat isn't cutting it)
