I dropped it off to be hemmed yesterday but I won't have it back for a week or so. I can't wait to share the finished results. If I had even thought this was possible before Afterism mentioned it, I'd have debubbled a few years ago!!

Freckles, I'll tell you what - this all pretty new for me and I'm excited at how much it's breathed life into old items. Just this last month or so I've taken a 12+ year old dress to have the straps shortened, hemmed 5+ year old cargo capris into bermudas (which I am wearing more than anything in my wardrobe right now!), and then taken the bubble out of this 3+ year old dress. Of course, I've also altered stuff that never fit right to start with and just threw good money after bad, but tweaking 'okay' or good items to make them fit great is awesome!

Thanks so much for posting the look once debubbled. I never think of changing something I don't like about my own clothes and seeing what can be done is fabulous.

I think it looks simply stunning on you this way and probably a lot more versatile. Hope your trip to the tailors is a happy outing.

Ha! Thanks, Patty - I sew little repairs or shortening straps, whatever. But doing this whole hem by hand would kill me. It took over an hour just to seam rip it apart!
And I'm so happy everyone likes the change from bubble to slightly asymmetrical. You never know what you'll end up with, do you? It was fun to find out. I think I will wear it a lot more this way. Yay for resurrecting 'back of closet dwellers'!

It looks evenly uneven ha ha, equal on both sides, that is. There is a definitive crease where it was hemmed that looks to me like it could easily be used for the new hem, but I don't sew so what do I know?! If so, this would be it's final length/hem because the crease is staying folded under on it's own (only about 1/8 or 1/4 is folded back). The lining is now a good 5 or 6 inches shorter than the hem but that's fine by me, the dress is opaque - the lining was more of a vehicle to hold up and bubble the hem I think. I'm happy I tried this - thanks again Afterism!

Thanks for the affirmation, gals! I am in the midst of tedious seam ripping right now lol. Girl X, it was sewn up a good 2 inches under and attached to a mesh inner lining to create the bubble. Before hemming I'd say I have 2 1/2 more inches in length - yay! I don't own a machine, so I'll have to send it in to be hemmed. Can't wait!!

In terms of look, I'd definitely lose the bubble on this dress, but I'm not sure you'll gain much in length. Since bubble skirts have a seam at the bottom where the dress connects, that often acts as the hem, if you undo that seam and then hem the dress normally, you might actually wind up losing a bit of length. You'd probably have to add a strip of lace or ribbon or something to extend it - this would look awesome, but it might require more effort than you were intending.
