I find charcoal grey as versatile as black 99% of the time.

I'd go with the grey, personally. I think the pattern adds some style to the coat, which is nice but very practical. In black it would look even more "gearish", IMO. black is nice for dressier coats, I think, but I prefer other colors or at least a patter on non-dressy coats.

I would get the gray, if you plan to keep the old parka and wear it sometimes (in dryer or milder weather, for example). But if you're going to let go of the old one, you might want black as a replacement? Unless you want a change. (I can't make a decision, but I thought at least I'd point out some considerations.)
I like the subtle pattern in the gray; it looks like a fun change.

Grey! My skiing parka is black, I'm beginning to wish I got one in a different color. Luckily my ski pants and helmet are white.

I've found gray to be more versatile, esp. if it has a subtle texture or pattern. If you wear black pants or a longer black skirt with a black jacket, the two blacks can sometime clash. A shiny black is more forgiving. JMHO.

I'd say to go with the gray. It sounds like that's the one that excites you more, and it looks like it would be just as versatile while looking a little less stark.

I would probably choose the charcoal gray. Being older, it is less harsh with my skin tone. I like the idea of a subtle pattern, too, but those are my preferences.

What does YOUR inner fashionista say? She is usually right! Have fun on your trip.

Seems like I'm forever getting stuck on black vs. grey! I have a lot of black in my wardrobe but recently I've been somewhat more drawn to grey. But then the issue of whether black is more versatile is always a nagging doubt.

I'll be in the USA shopping with Mom next week (yay!) and I'm thinking about getting this jacket for casual wear and outdoor activities. It's gear but I like the sleek shape. I have a black lightweight parka type jacket that is supposed to fulfill the same goals but the sleeves are just a bit too short, and despite frequent treatment with waterproofing spray it can only withstand a light shower.

The grey has a subtle pattern, I think it's check but the photo is a bit hard to see. The black is just a plain, flat black.
