Runcarla - I am always grateful to those who share their thought processes and challenges. I always either learn something, or start thinking about something a different way.

Admittedly, I'm quite different from you in size, style and shopping habits. I enjoy online shopping, and go for bigger silhouettes than you do. But I love your color palette and how you work in lilacs and ivory (your lightweight puffer is killer).

Winter accessories and specs will be fun to play with. Even a teeny bit of online window shopping can sometimes spark a new idea. Hats - do you do hats?

Wishing you some new and fun inspirations!

Love your palette- and I don't think of it as mourning! I'm totally with you about not wanting bright colors...At All. Mostly black, brown, olive, beige for me these days. Even at home- I'm ready to toss the lot and go with light brown and white only!

Interesting! My palette has been subdued this year, too. Lots of black and dark brown, especially in the second half of the year, some olive and rust, with a smattering of pale blue and white/ecru in spring. At least, that's what I remember! I should go have a look at my 2021 collection in Finds. All I know is, I'm feeling very good about wearing mostly dark neutrals all the time, and have not hit the blahs yet.

I'll be curious to see what kind of refreshers you come up with for the holiday season and heading into 2022. Love the idea of dramatic silhouettes (I hear you on skirts/dresses being a bit tricky outside of summer -- but maybe more wide/pleated trousers?), more texture/pattern, and some bold accessories or jewelry. Lots of ways to add visual interest without going light/bright if you're not feeling drawn to brights at the moment.

Runcarla - I'm so sorry you are feeling like you've lost your way. I can only tell you, every time I click on one of your posts I think you look absolutely smashing - especially in lilac!! I think we are all feeling dissociated playing this weird game of cosmic dodgeball. LIke being trapped in a bad teen dystopian novel with no method of escape. Our world view has changed and we are all learning how to negotiate it and who we are now within it. How can we dress the outside when this sea change has fundamentally changed our inner vision. If it's any consolation because of diet, resistance and aerobic training I'm also down a size and I've had to actually rebuy about 1/2 of my work wardrobe. Thank god for poshmark and everything being discounted because I tried to source same. I too feel most comfortable in what I had, I liked it and I did not want to change. So rather than buy new, or buy now, I've tried to replace exact pieces but a size down. There is nothing wrong with the tried and true. Accepting that when you don't know what you want sitting tight and letting time, calm, and perspective kick in before making purchases that are different for different's sake is probably wise. But hugs to you. Wishing you peace, clarity and joy!!

Oh, I almost forgot you are due for new eyeglasses! New frames can definitely provide a bit of a shot in the arm. I tend to get a little stressed when shopping for frames (one of those items that I find very challenging, plus they’re expensive so a big investment!), but I took my time and had a really excellent SA helping me. He’s the shop manager and has 30+ years of fitting and styling eyeglass frames on faces, so he was terrific at suggesting shapes I would not have necessarily chosen, which surprisingly worked! But I tried on frames in three different places before I went there. So take your time and enjoy it as much as you can. If you’re patient and picky, I think you’ll find some that give you a boost!

Really love your new 'Victorian mourning colours' and I always admired your well thought out and put together stylish but practical outfits!!! :-) But I too, can relate not feeling brights so much this year... but you know what? I don't really miss them either!!!
I just love being creative with some light neutrals including lots of creams for ex. love discovering the practicality of a longer to knee shacket vest in cream thrown over literally everything!! That's just bright- and lightening- enough my darker fall/winter palette, too! Hang in there- you are always a great inspiration to me and your taste for brights will came back eventually!

Your lifestyle doesn’t allow for skirts? I can’t imagine. Of the things you’ve mentioned on here (besides working out), I can’t think of any where a skirt wouldn’t work. I mean, you wouldn’t want any lovely new clothes for heavy landscaping, but kneeling to plant bulbs or stretching to cut spent blooms can certainly be done in a skirt. Then again, you may have more of a life than you show on here.

I find that after a dark color spell I am strongly drawn to color. I think it’s okay to want what we want.

However I had been feeling a little stuck. I purchased something just outside my norm and I found it energizing.

One other suggestion is, if you haven’t already, spend time playing in your closet, Pretend someone with a different eye is with you. What might they suggest? What rules do you have that maybe could be broken? I’ve often found new combinations that way.

Good luck!

Carla, safety and security are top of mind during the pandemic, so it is not surprising that you (and the rest of us) feel this way. Rest assured, your outfits all look great and the colour palette you have been wearing suits your colouring beautifully.

I had to have a partial thyroidectomy in July and to hide the scar, bought two pearl necklaces. I love that pearls add an Angie and Chanel aspect to my style and it has made me feel happier about my style.

Perhaps adding a new bright or light colour that works well with this palette is a style direction to take in 2022. Do you have a favourite colour? If you are not feeling bright colour at the moment, I find the addition of white or cream is always a good remedy for feeling dark and dull which is why I am loving my pearls so much.

Although I'm not in exactly the same situation, I can certainly empathize with the challenges of living in a small market and not being in love with online shopping. And with questioning my style and style direction.

Cat2's comment just keeps echoing in my head: (the pandemic has) taken away almost everything I dressed for... This is so true. For me, it's hard to get excited about buying clothes when I have nowhere to wear the ones I already own! (This week's big outing a trip to the dentist. Woohoo.)

On top of the lack of places to GO, for those of us in small Canadian markets (and probably for others as well), the pandemic has also dramatically altered what we can access and how we can access it.

But while this whole global mess might be affecting your purchases, I don't think it can touch your style. IMO your style is what you do with whatever you have. And you, Carla, do magical things.

If ever there was a time when it has made perfect sense to reach for the comforting and comfortable, it is now. I don't believe that's a failing of style in any way. It's one very natural response to the combination of global and personal stresses hitting you simultaneously and pretty darned persistently.

If 'Victorian mourning colours' are what speaks to you right now, that's what speaks to you. As other have said, your palette is beautiful and sophisticated and flattering, so it's not like you are following in Queen Victoria's all-black footsteps.

If you ask me, it's OK that you don't feel bright colours right now. You will.

Someday, a surely as spring is going to come (oh, how I cling to that thought as winter blows in!), you're going to spot some colourful item and your heart will give a little flutter. And you will know you're ready.

I hope this thread has encouraged you Carla - it has certainly helped me. We are a few months ahead of other places with Covid - earlier to lock down, earlier to open up, rinse and repeat. You might be surprised how quickly there is a bounce back once things reach a reasonable new normal (here we wear masks inside everywhere, but right now everything is open). But I remember the overwhelming tedium of the last lockdown very well.
Anyway, I like the idea of moving slowly with perhaps one interesting novelty (an accessory ordered from Etsy that you can customize?). I have to say your outfits are as fab as ever if not fabber.

Carla, I think I understand what you are saying. Although to me your outfits seem inspired and creative, the constrains of last year and the general feeling around us made everyone look at their fashion/closet choices in a different way.
Who would have guessed that clothing is a magical item that is transformed when it is used for different activities and around different people.
Your outfits are far from flat but if you are in the lookout for a winter coat and winter accessories why not in a vibrant color that can be used with your current color scheme.

There are so many restrictions these days because of the pandemic and it is quite frustrating not being able to go out and try things on.

You always seem very stylish to me but I do understand the need to experiment with new ideas and styles. I am in the midst of an online shopping frustration so I hear you. I don't want to talk about it right now as I'm still frustrated and trying to sort things out, but really will only use click and collect if I can from now on, but maybe that is not always possible. I suppose at least we are saving money.

Carla, first, know that you don't look like you've lost your style mojo at all!

Second, I think we are all feeling a little or a lot like you have expressed. Maybe not now - but at some point in the last 20 months for sure. It will get better! Hang in there.

We have been lucky in the US with respect to online shopping fabness - as long as you don't need appliances (6 to 10 month wait if they are out of stock). I empathize with the lack of as much assortment in Canada. But it will pass.

I like the suggestions of adding some thing(s) WILD and statement-y that change the landscape of your wardrobe....but in the Victorian palette you are feeling at the moment. Skirts are good! Patterned pants, and maybe some wild boots. I see no way around the online shopping thing though....

Wardrobe churn can be very good, and these are all the right reasons for churn.

You are right to give yourself some time. It will come to you soon!

Oh no! Lisa, the way we simply cannot understand the simplest things would make me giggle if I weren’t concerned you were upset. I was agreeing with you that it is awkward to call me by the initials of my newer screen name, as they are the same as two other peoples, so I suggested a different wa to shorten it. I’m sure you & all Canadians have far better French than I. My screen name is only because Bernard, during one of his fleeting memberships, referred to me that way, so I wanted him to feel welcome.

Staigiere F - did I refer to you incorrectly?I'm not sure whether your comment was directed at me or to someone else. It was pure laziness borne from not wanting to go back and look at the spelling of your screen name . I supposed I missed an i - sorry about that. My French is middling at best, so it doesn't flow off of the keyboard.

I think from reading the comments that you have expressed a lot of what we are all feeling nearly two years into the pandemic.l wear my gym kit to do all my home chores and exercise then get into my fleece two piece. All my lovely clothes are hanging unworn. L have no where of any importance to go so no need to wear them and l lack the motivation to do so anyway. As my husband said recently ,what’s the point in getting dressed and for once l agreed with him!Sorry not very cheering for you l know but hopefully expressing solidarity with your feelings.

I'm sorry you're finding online shopping to be less-than-inspiring. I'm certainly finding it to be time-consuming, especially now that I've moved out of "the city" and am still not going into the office there. It's harder to make returns.

That said, whenever I go to a B&M store these days, I am completely underwhelmed. None of the things I like online are ever available in person (in my size). I hope this is something that will ease up a bit with the pandemic, but I fear things were going in this direction already.

Like most others here, I know what you mean and am feeling a lot of the same doldrums. You always have such fun mixes that seem fresh and new so it surprises me but I know what you're saying. I also tend to go the safe route, hate to spend the money on a fail. For me, new shoes always spice things up and are a little but more of a sure thing but I am a diehard shoe person

Hopefully soon you can get back to in person shopping. I know I like to touch things and try them on so the online thing is hard.

I can relate to the malaise part of lockdown - not great when combined with stress. And I agree with Lisa - expressing this can help.

I think the changing retail scene will mean in person shopping will be reduced moving forward - sadly - I also like browsing and touching. Quite where it will end up I don’t know.

You continue to look stylish, original, polished and I admire your lean wardrobe that seems to dress you for all occasions and activities. The muted lavenders and olives suit you - but would also allow for red or a bright colour if you want to.

For me- aside from more online shopping and less in person - my shopping has not increased or decreased. My wardrobe is in a good place - I am just lacking many reasons to get dressed up.

I think lots of people will agree with the current mood. Similarly to you, Suz and others, this year I have been replenishing my essentials albeit in lighter colours, when possible.

I like one of the above suggestions about accessories but I am not sure this solves the main issue. In my case, I am still trying to figure out if my current lifestyle is going to be stable for the next few years and have decided to take a break from big purchases until I have a clearer idea.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling. We all are. At least we get to moan about it together.

I must say, I feel very much like Katerina, having lost interest in fashion for the first time in my life. This seems to have been only temporary. Coming back to it after a long break feels quite refreshing. I’m pushed by changes in my appearance to review the whole package, and I notice I’m being creative again.

I do feel very differently about it now though. I find it hard to be inspired by fashion the way I used to be. Not sure if anyone remembers how disillusioned I was before I stopped posting a few years ago. How my style develops from now on, only time will tell. I know from past experience that none of this will be fixed overnight.

With regard to styles and shopping strategies, obviously we’re very different. At the moment, I’m focused on identifying needs based on lifestyle rather than shopping opportunistically and for fun. This, it turns out, is its own kind of fun, because I need a complete refresher. Also enjoying my personal indoors/outdoors challenge, as well as rediscovering some old favorites.

You never know, it might be good to give it a rest for a while. But even then, my tip would be to always have a few things to wear that give you genuine pleasure, like the floral sneakers or the lilac trench coat. I like Janet’s suggestions for small items to boost your mood, but my remedy would be to splurge on a fantasy signature piece to wear to the supermarket. Or, you could split the difference and buy some extra special jewelry.

Whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up.

For me the pandemic challenge has been that it’s taken away almost everything I dressed for: in person work, large family events, business entertaining, community events, weekends away, etc., and replaced it with a endless loop of days at home interrupted only by either outdoor athletic activity or home exercise, necessary errands and unavoidable medical care. It’s understandable that you have felt uninspired!
