Interesting and my number is probably similar in pieces exiting. For different reasons but clothes do wear out especially in a tight closet. I hope you find some colours that you like and that complement your existing pieces!!

I am looking forward to see your vests and trouser outfits. I love this feminine tomboy look. Saying goodbye to worn out items is a sweet sorrow. Saying goodbye to the golden cords is a blow, such a shame that they did not go the distance. You put together great capsules and the scarf La Ped found is a great item, pulling together your colours.

I have a pair of lilac cords that I always pair with grey or navy, but I am inspired by your autumnal/earth colors and will try it myself! :)

Good job with the cull and being so organized about it. I wish I'd counted how many pieces I let go of this year; it's a lot...

I love the idea of a waistcoat and pleated menswear trousers! I hope you're able to source some great pieces (or materials) and figure that out; it's such a fun look. Dapper. :)

This Madewell scarf popped up in my feed and made me think of you. Pricey for being synthetic, but the colour scheme is so perfect!

I'm rooting for a few fun red pieces to find their way into your wardrobe. Happy, energizing, and it looks great on you!

Wow, I love how you described a potential color palette as "mourning colors". Those are colors I love to wear. To keep it from reading 'somber', I like to make sure there's lots of texture or shine/sparkle or even a pop of color with a necklace or scarf.

That’s 20 items for the entire year. I sat on earlier discards and made final decisions this week. I have acquired 18 new items this year, and some are replacements: red coat out - lilac coat in, white Skechers out - white Converse in, 3 button downs out - 1 button down in, 1 pr gloves out - one pair mitts in, etc. However 2 pair of trousers out don’t equate with one scarf in!

With a small wardrobe, garments get worn with greater frequency, and thrifted items may have seen some love before they came my way. Turnover can be high. The upside is, it’s fun to update with new things. The downside, it’s a challenge during a pandemic! Destination shopping trips to the Big City did not happen for S/S and F/W, and I’m still figuring my way through online shopping.

@Angie - I’m open to acquiring more yellow, and lilac plays nice with autumn palettes.

Nodding along with Joy and Suz . And yes , 20 pieces is a lot to lose , and I can see how a dark closet is not as appealing . I’m a warm -toned autumn colour lover , but struggle with moving those colours into winter. I am SO seasonal with everything ( clothes , food , home decor especially ) . I like Joy’s idea of red with olive and olive with lavender - although it might be tough to find lavender at this time of year . Anyways- I’ve just completed a thorough rearrangement of our bedroom furniture for winter , and am inspired by you to do a closet edit . Also - tell me how you lost 20 lbs over the past few years .

I'm mourning the loss of your brights with you, Carla. I know they make you happy! That's where I see the biggest wardrobe holes after the edit. And because red is versatile, it will work well with what is left.

I love you in earth colours too - the brighter ones like mustard and cinnamon. (See visual for colours).

Wow, Carla, that's a lot of loss! A moment of mourning for those brights and for the lovely items leaving your closet!

You definitely deserve some retail therapy. You have worn the heck out of your clothes, added new items mindfully, and reaped the benefits with a closet that really works well for you.

I'm not sure it is an either/or proposition in terms of colours to add. I agree with Joy that red gives you pleasure and might be an easy add for the holiday period. It only takes a few items to make you feel like your "pop of colour" self again. A scarf, a new pair of shoes/ boots, a simple top that can coordinate with stuff you still own.

Then, for the next round, your choices might be determined somewhat by what is available. Earth tones are still trending and you wear them well, so you might want to get an upgrade for those Madewell trousers (what a shame about those -- I loved them on you!).

Can't wait to see what direction you go and hope the shopping experience is a fun one, to the extent that is possible these days.

@nemosmom - not sure if it’s a silhouette, but In 1932 Marlene Dietrich started a pants trend when she wore a tuxedo to an opening. I like the shapes in #2, but don’t want to look look vintage. I did order a waistcoat pattern and plan some sewing projects when the weather gets icky. I’m also doing more full tucking of tops. Wore a bulky sweater tucked into elastic waist pants, and quite liked the lines.

@nuancedream - the garments that were edited due to being too large were mostly tops where a little looseness wasn’t an issue at first. Tailoring for shoulder fit issues isn’t something I can do, and the garments are older pieces

@joy, and others - I still have a few red pieces - a skirt, sweater, winter puffer, beret, and cross body bag. The red Converse Sneakers had holes, as did a thrifted linen dress, and thrifted gingham button down. A red raincoat was faded and had become too large.

It is interesting to me that the closet looks so dark - though I haven’t added any black or blue garments this year. I’m guessing that I wore colourful items more, so they just got worn out faster?

The comfort is the most important one for me - recently my fav yellow ECCO 7 sneakers were returned to the Nordy for that reason ( I was so sad to let them go ). The idea of building a yellow capsule ( tops, bag, accessories ) was put on hold sadly.
I'm putting off the seasonal audit since my weight is at the lowest level now but that could change later.
You do colors and textures beautifully @Runcarla - so I'm sure your future color palette will be one to watch .

That is a lot leaving your already small closet. You may want to add a bit of red for the holidays. You can pair it with olive for red and green or lavender to pack a punch. My strategy is to shop thrift shops ( if and when they open again) as an easy ethical way to shop. I am even more lenient with iffy fibers if it means keeping then out of the land fill a while longer.
I can see you in autumn colors, which should become abundant in thrift stores if people edit out last falls color purchases.

Best wishes for the next steps of your style journey. I hope you will choose to wear more warm/autumnal colours, as they look so great with your colouring.

October is wardrobe audit time in our household - and it was my turn this week. I didn’t think there would be much to cull, because I love all my clothes, right?! Well, a hard look at those well loved clothes revealed it was time for some - 20 items for the year, to be exact.

Two items are being passed on due to comfort issues. The golden Madewell corduroys (October 2019) developed a ‘knot’ in the waistband facing, and a pair of white loafers (2018) have arch supports that hit in an uncomfortable spot.) Half the items are being passed on for being too large. Weight loss (I’m around 130 lbs) has resulted in garments from 2-3 years or so ago (when I was closer to 150 lbs) now fitting ill. 8 items were discarded due to wear - holes (!), pilling, stains, fading. My red and white capsules took a hit, and I’m feeling the loss of signature brights. My closet seems dominated by (dark) blue, olive, and black with camel and lilac providing some lightness.

The next two months I’ll be musing over what direction I want my style to take going into 2021, including palette: ‘Mourning Colours’ - black, lilac, grey, and silver (awfully sober, though) or autumnal colours - brown, rust, dark green. How to include some vintage elements into modern outfits. How to work in more pattern. How to add more texture. All while keeping my closet sustainable, individual, manageable, practical, authentic, and therapeutic - or SIMPAT!
