I am a weird American as that I don't like peanut butter. I used to tolerate it and even enjoy it in small amounts, but in the last few years every time I eat it I get a stomache ache. Not having good circulation affects my digestion and I think it just doesn't digest well for me. I can still do other nut butters in moderation and can eat peanuts by the load without repercussions, so IDK what it is.

I love hearing about everyone's snack cupboards and fav snacks. I fall into the category of getting eaten out of house and home by the men in my life. Mine can be downright selfish, extending their snacking onto my expensive specially bought snacks that I had to have when I was put on an elimination diet by a doc. They left me snack-less at a time when I couldn't run to the corner store for more and was constantly hungry and encouraged to snack as much as I wanted. I also had an incident with an ex where we were trying to save on groceries and I ended up cooking on a tiny budget for the week because he couldn't give up his insane amounts of expensive processed snacks. He was spending a good 30 dollars a week or more on snacks and would bypass any of the healthy snacks I made and eating a full meal to snack. This was particularly bad because he was pre-diabetic and didn't digest fat well (gallbladder issues) and would go to work and buy stuff and then come home sick.

Soooooo fun!

Maya - I LOOOOOOVE Nutella...when I was younger (say just pre-teens) I used to buy a Dolly or Girlfriend magazine (oz equivalent of Seventeen or similar...) and a jar of Nutella...and actually eat the entire jar in one sitting with a spoon whilst browsing my magazine.

I know. Disgusting.

I am actually not that keen on Tim Tams...never have been really! I think there are more delicious chocolate biscuits to be had.

Theresa - I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE Shapes Chicken Crimpys, they're pretty much the only ones I will eat!

This thread is lovely

Hehe I have been nicknamed "Tim Tam" by many a person - very much used to it now! Maya if you ever want a care package of Tim Tams please do let me know. There's dark chocolate and double coated choc ones available now......mmmmm. Although I do much prefer regular Cadburys milk chocolate if I am after a chocolate fix!! (and that happens often). My other sweet fix of choice is a tub of caramel flavoured rice pudding.......mmmmm! Or a mug of warm ribena on a cold night!

I'm also into dips and crackers at the moment. Hummus or spinach dip with rice crackers......mmmm.

I also baked this cake the other day. So yummy to take to work!

http://www.exclusivelyfood.com.....-cake.html

I'm also enjoying apples, bananas and strawberries as snacks as the moment. Also fresh dates as a decadent sweet treat. So excited that summer fruits will soon be coming into season though!!!

Wow this has become a bit of an essay hasn't it? Clearly I am more of a snacker than I like to think!!!

This thread is such a fun peek into people's lives.
My snack cupboard seems to change with the seasons. Because we're coming to the end of summer I am still on a pickles and olives kick. With some hummus, fruit salsa and anything home grown tomato. With fall starting cheeses and nuts will definitely take more of a lead role. Savory crackers go with any of these things.
I'm not much of a chocolate eater but when I am, it's definitely dark.
I do love sour treats but have never heard of candian wine gums. Angie, can you enlighten me?
Theresa, Reese's peanut butter cups are DH's very favorite thing. In fact he loves them so much he has asked me not to have them in the house. Peanut butter with chocolate is a very popular treat in my part of the US (smack dab in the middle). In any form. In fact one of my kids favorite treats growing up was rice krispie treats made with peanut butter and chocolate instead of marshmallows. They would ask me to make rice krispie treats, "you know mom, the good kind."

Theresa, Reese's aren't my favorite. There is something funky about the peanut butter. But I have a box of chocolates from a house guest right now that had a few chocolate peanut butter cups and I'm savoring them. They're more natural-tasting and delicious. Peanut butter and chocolate is divine! I just love nuts and chocolate in general, although nothing beats hazelnut and chocolate.

I can't imagine ever having my fill of Tim Tams! I am quite deprived though :(. And yes I have achieved the Tim Tam slam. It took some practice! At first I didnt bite off enough of the corners to make it work, but once I figured out the right proportions it worked. I have to admit I prefer to eat them the boring way though. I like them crisp, not soggy.

My favorite Tim Tams were one of the limited edition flavors...choco-chili something. They were so brilliant I could have eaten the entire box in one sitting. They were like Mexican hot chocolate in a cookie. I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Theresa, Reese cups are a classic American candy. Peanut butter and chocolate are a marriage made in heaven:) It's just as easy to open a jar of peanut butter and dip your own chocolate in the jar!

Also, for those of you in the right growing zone for it (zone 7 and warmer, I think), figs are easy and very satisfying to grow~

Oh and on the topic of snacks...

What's with the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup thingys?

A friend went to the US a few years ago, fell in love with them and couldn't stop raving about them. So, one day I found a tiny stash in a local store so bought one to try...

It was awful! I'm sorry if any one loves them, but it was the most odd combination of flavours, and I just couldn't get my head or tastebuds around it!

So, can you gals enlighten me? Are they a big deal over there, or not really? What is you love about them?

Thanks! LOL

oooh you guys like TimTams!!!! I must admit, having eaten more TimTams as a teenager than some people have hot showers, I'm a tad over them now - don't get me wrong, I still enjoy them, but I can't eat a whole packet in one go anymore LOL

If you do manage to get yourself some Maya, you will have to try a TimTam Slam...

Cut opposite diagonal corners off your TimTam, have a nice hot drink ready (a lot of people use coffee, but I used to use hot chocolate or even tea!), then... dip one cut end of the TimTam in your drink, and suck through the other end!!

The TimTam acts as a straw, but the "slam" bit comes once the TimTam has absorbed enough of the drink to become quite soggy - then you have to "slam" it into your mouth before it disintegrates into a sloshy mess on the table!!

Yes, we Aussies do have some very strange habits LOL

But, all this talk of snacks... well, I think I may have to go out later today to get something totally evil but utterly delicious LOL!!!!

I should add: Aside from M&M's which I grew up with by default (my dad worked for 25 years at the corporate headquarters), I also prefer Euro chocolate. American chocolate is too sugary and acidic by comparison. But I will still eat it. Chocolate is one of my favorite things in the world.

For all the Aussies out there, I absolutely envy you and your Tim Tams :(. I used to get care packages full of assorted Tim Tams before my friend in Australia left for Germany. I have had a hankering for them for YEARS. There must be an Australian grocer somewhere in NYC that I need to find. Incidentally, when Tam first revealed her name and location, the first thing I thought of was Tim Tams, and ever since then I have associated her with the delicious confections.

Of course if I have nothing else, I will absolutely eat Nutella straight from the jar with a spoon...

I forgot to mention multi grain tortilla chips and tomatillo salsa. I don't eat multi grain and wheat for health reasons--I just find them tastier!

Marianna, I've been on a pita chips + hummus kick too. They're just so good!

Snacking on cereal is a very foreign concept in this household. But not in yours!

Marianna, figs are in season and we have them everyday at the moment - it makes me think of you :)

Sparky-Anne, its hard to believe that South Africa makes the best milk chocolate in the world, but they truly do. Try their Cadburys.

Barbara, I like your Euro chocolate selection! High five on those taste buds.

Angie, I ADORE Leonidas Belgian chocolate, which I am convinced is the best chocolate in the world. Having lived in Europe where I practically BATHED in various wonderful chocolates, I know what you mean about American chocolate. Although I DO enjoy an occasional all-American Hershey's kiss or Nestle chocolate, which is actually Swiss-style. I have sampled dozens of European chocolate brands and Ritter Sport, from Germany is, IMHO, the best 'everyday' eating chocolate. Their white chocolate is to die for!

Khris, but I am demented and cannot eat just a *little* snack on most occasions. But I don't feel like discussing that today.

Marianna- I find that I do a lot better if I *do* have between meal snacks. I think it's what you eat and how much of it. For me, a snack is usually under 200 calories. I eat a piece of fruit and a slice of cheese, a handful of almonds, a greek yogurt, veggie sticks with hummus, or a bag of home made microwave poopcorn. Having some protein in my snacks seems to be helpful, too.

All of this sounds so delicious. I'd probably be a LOT thinner if I didn't snack -- it's my weakness. I could make a meal out of snacking. This week I have been on a pita crackers and hummus kick. Yum.
