Hmm. I've always found the duvets people have plenty toasty. The big thing is to have a robe and not scandalise people by walking around in your pjs...

I'd also go with the thin silk long underwear. Send DH to bed a half hour early to warm up the bed for you ;)
ETA: I'd suggest taking a soft knit beanie or buying one there. I wore mine quite a bit when near the beach for warmth and to hold my hair in the wind.

I live in what's considered the Southern part of the US, Virginia Beach and let's just say in winter my house is heated to 72 degrees and my DH and I like it that way! I sleep in flannels or wicking workout gear in winter...

Silk long underwear. Keeps you warm, can be worn as nightclothes if needed, or as an underlayer under your day clothes, very thin and lightweight and packs down to almost nothing.

I'd go with flanelle pj's, an extra short sleeve t for under that and socks. If you are too warm get rid of the flanelle pj top and socks. The rest should do you fine but not be too warm and if not hot flash time all of them together should keep you warm.
What do you usually wear at home in winter?

I guess it depends what sort of temperatures you're used to? I'm in the Midlands in the UK so not a huge way from Ireland and the thought of thermals layered with flannel PJs and a hat in October is making me sweat! and I run cold. October can still be quite warm here in the UK, I usually don't put my winter duvet on till the end of November, though my winter pjs may have made an appearance if it's particularly cold. My winter pjs consist of thin jersey yoga pants and a thin long sleeve t and of course socks but only regular weight socks not thick ones. That said I guess if you're used to say desert temperatures (sorry I don't know where you're based) then yes you'll need lots of layers and a hat x

Wonderful suggestions.. yes, yes, yes to a hat for sure!
I like the idea of layering options.. When experiencing the hot flashes last Fall I bought wicking workout pants and tops... Perhaps a set ot those under the flannels will do the trick...Warm socks a must...
My husband has such fond memories of his father putting hot water bottles in his bed nightly as a child.. Fahter grew up in Ireland , but came to Boston as and adult where hubby was born.

warm socks, flannel pjs, and possibly thin silk long underwear (also great to wear under skirts or trousers). Also I second bringing a wool beanie, to wear into bed on cold nights, or just walking around outside.

Seconding the flannel pj's and socks. I got into the habit of taking a warm bath at night, and then jumped right into bed. (Been to UK and Ireland month of April and month of September.)

I find that although I am cold natured the hot flashes take priority. In the past I've always slept in flannel, but now I find that only the thinnest cotton (even on the coldest nigh will do.) I usually wear sweats right up to bed time then change quickly into the thin cotton PJs. Then jump in bed, and snuggle down. It doesn't take long to warm up (especially if a flash hits!) Then the next morning, I jump up, quickly put on my sweats and hoodie and I'm ready to go! Hope this helps. Flashes are no fun!!!

Houses aren't insulated as well, and the air tends to be damp. Definitely socks for bed, and a hot water bottle or rice bag you can heat in the microwave. Getting into a clammy cold bed is torture. Oh, and even a hat or nightcap will help too.

Layers! I would personally bring a flannel PJs set with a tank to either go under the top for extra warmth or to wear by itself if you're hot.

A long cardi or similar can also do double duty as a coverup for the plane and to sleep in.

Since I have been planning what to pack for my October Ireland trips now so I don't have to unpack fall/winter before the trip, I was inspired by Angie's post on investing in hidden aspects of style...
From what I've read regarding Ireland they've said not to expect the warmth of home when sleeping ( will be staying in homes owned by my husband's family who live there) I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could purcahse to be ready for this... Note, I can't stand cold and keep my house at 72 degrees in wiinter... And what if by some chance I am having the dreaded hot flashes of menopause going on during that time??? I've only had one bout so far that went away, so who knows? I am planning for everything!
So what's a woman to wear for bed in those circumstances????
Suggestions anyone????
