Last minute is fine (i.e. the day before with time for last minute laundry) so long as it is a similar formality and climate to mine. If not, I have to try and plan many weeks ahead of time in order to buy some missing bits!

I isolate what I want to bring clothing wise and then launder promptly if I wear before hand. I also pack the day before. Everything toiletry wise I use and put immediately back in the travel case. I HATE rushing at the last minute.

I have a generic packing list and start collecting about a week ahead. I pack for all weather options as I probably will see both sun and rain on holiday. During that week I do laundry and clothes that are meant for the holiday go to the packing area. The day before we leave I pack everything, including toothbrushes. We use them and put them straight back.
DH packs his stuff the morning we leave.

I've been working on refining my packing strategy. A week or two before a trip I start pulling all the clothes I think I'll wear. I usually hang them on the side of my dresser. Then if I pull something from my packing pile I just make a mental note that it needs to be laundered and returned before the trip. The empty hangers help remind me. For my recent trip to dc I took tons of pictures while I was packing, both of outfits on me and the full wardrobe I was planning to take. I didn't really use these pictures once it came time to pack, but they definitely helped me solidify my capsule in my head beforehand.

The fact that four of us are usually packing is actually helpful in the laundry arena for me because if I have one shirt that needs to be washed at the last minute I can always throw it in with a family member's load. My youngest likes to have her suitcase fully packed a week ahead of time, but oldest daughter and dh both do a load or two of laundry the night before a trip and then pack those clothes.

Yes, I do that sometimes, setting aside clothes. My husband takes it to the extreme. One year, we were preparing for a 3 week vacation to see his family. My husband "put aside" almost every summer piece of clothing that our kids had ! All they had left was ill fitting winter clothes.

What Lyn and Jenny said. No wearing of clothes that you think you might take on the trip a couple of days before packing day. Granted Anne, we have a small household compared to you!

Wow; I don't generate a lot of laundry here - 1 load every 2 weeks :p

Like JennyAnne, I wear things the day or two before that I definitely will not bring with me on the trip!

I like to pack the day before, too... to make sure I have the most up-to-date weather. I always preface the two or so days before by doing all my laundry and making sure to only wear things I definitely won't want to pack.

I was rereading Angie's packing for Japan post, and saw how she packs the day before hand. The thought came to mind - are her choices limited by what is clean?

I find this when packing, and sometimes if I am superorganized (not usually) I deliberately start setting aside clothes early so I don't wear them and get them dirty prior to leaving!

Do you do this?

Of course, Angie's small household would not generate the amount of washing mine does (at last count, 16 loads a week, but I think it could have gone up) which can lead to clothes taking a while to get washed.

Off to put on a load to wash overnight...
