Well imagine a heel breaking off a shoe. The shoe falls back because it doesn't have the heel to support it. So if you cut an inch off of a 2" shoe, or cut 2" off a 3" shoe, etc. the effect will be the same--just not as dramatic. That's what I am confused about.

I actually had this one pair of boots with a ridiculously high heel and when the cobbler told me he was going to have to shorten them I was so relieved. It certainly made a difference. I should have asked him to lower them even more!

Like I said, I've only had it done in connection with replacing the cap on the heels. I don't know why the shoe would fall backwards but physics aren't my thing. It is a cheap alteration so if you have an unbearably high pair of shoes that you don't wear anyway, it is worth a shot...

Hmm, my impression after reading this (and the blog) is that you can only remove a tiny bit...less than an inch. I'm just confused about how to achieve the right balance. If you remove an inch or more, won't the shoe just fall backwards? It has already been shaped and molded to be on a heel of a certain height. If I'm mistaken I would be interested in hearing more.

Wonderful news! Does this mean that if we find a pair of shoes we love with 3" heels, we might actually be able to turn them into 2" heels (or just a tiny bit higher)?

This is truly a revelation!

Hi Angie,

First I just want to say I love your blog and forum but don't get many chances to post because I often read when I need a break from work and our security settings won't let us posts on blogs like this. So unfortunately you won't hear from me often.

I did want to say though that I don't think shortening the heels of shoes would be expensive. I wear out the plastic caps on the heels of my pumps and boots all the time. When I take them to the cobbler often times the heels are uneven because the way I walk I wear out the outer side of the heel before the inner. Every cobbler I've been to evens the heels before they replace the caps. Most don't charge for the evening of the heels but the most I've ever been charge is $4 for that additional service (the replacing of the caps runs between $8 and $12). So I know it can be done....but I'm not sure about taking several inches off. The most I've ever done was about 1/2 an inch.

Just wanted to share!
