Thanks everyone these are great ideas. I will start with Vicki since she has had a success and lives in my area. Laughing about the bedazzled--I was really wondering how I would get the jewels on the neckline...

My husband has had mixed results having items custom-made -- he's 6'6" and thin, so dress shirts NEVER fit him correctly, even from the big & tall departments (tall sizes were always too roomy in the body and borderline long enough in the sleeves and back). Some items were brilliant, others were adequate. And then there was the custom order he placed with a well-known designer's NY bespoke shop, only to receive it and realize they cut the shirts to *his exact measurement* with no allowance. Doh! Well, at least now that he's no longer in the corporate world very often, he doesn't need those shirts so often. It's a lot easier to find ranch wear that fits. :-D

But anyway...the one custom items I've had made for myself is my wedding dress. It was made by a really excellent costume designer for a nearby theater department -- she has a side business creating wedding gowns (and in fact was in the news recently for designing a Ebola hazmat suit). If you can find someone in your area who has a great reputation for doing this kind of costume work (shouldn't be that hard in LA!), maybe they can help. Good luck!

I have had a bunch of custom things made, but I have found them all at art shows & the artist has made them for me.

I think that if you can find a good custom clothier (most likely in a big city) it shouldn't be that tough to get this done.

The best thing is that you can get something that fits, that is distinctive/one of a kind, and you can get it made in whatever textile is your personal preference.

Good luck!

I can see a high end tailor in India doing this quite well. I haven't lived there in a long time so I can't provide any useful info but perhaps you should contact Eshakti and ping Manidipa.

ETA: They sell embroidered patches like this with mirrors and beadwork that you can sew onto clothing.

I grew up with a mom that sewed almost all my clothing and have a sister who makes custom wedding dresses for a living. My wedding outfit was modeled off clothing I already owned and loved but
was not fancy enough for the occassion and I've had others turn my own
designs into wearable reality - all artist friends who didn't sew for a living but took it very seriously as a hobby. There are definitely people out there skilled enough to take a photo or a drawing and turn it into a custom fit piece for you. There are probably quite a few skilled tailors and seamstresses near you, if your Southern CA location is near Los Angeles, as it is one of the places that clothing companies send their designs to be turned into patterns and sewn. It has been a while and the designer I knew did casual wear, but try an internet search and see who is in your area or search Yelp for a tailor or seamstress. If I were searching, I would lean heavily towards someone who can show quality samples and specializes in high quality structured clothing for women - especially if I were picking someone freelance who didn't own an established shop.

I made myself a lined velvet sheath dress, and then spent four times as much time as it took to make the dress hand sewing beads in a band around the neck...after seeing a similar designer dress that was beyond my reach. I love hand work--quilting and embroidery--so I enjoyed making the garment as much as wearing it after I made it. I would do it again, but I am very time constrained, so don't have much opportunity these days.

Hand embellishment is very time consuming!

When I lived in Panama there was a woman down the street from my house who would make anything - just from a drawing. I designed a couple of items and she made them come to life! It's a little hard to speak to quality and fit, as I was quite young and not very discriminating. But I was happy with the outcome because they were things that I had in my head that I wanted to wear. The one that I remember most was a white top made of some kind of silky fabric (I probably had no idea what it was even then). It had these flowy full sleeves that ended in tight, wide cuffs that I had crocheted with tiny pearl-like beads interwoven, and a long row of pearl buttons down the front. I'm sure I wouldn't be caught dead in it now, but I felt fabulous in it when I was 19.

On a funnier note, I also decided to try to design and create a dress all by myself as a teenager. I didn't have access to a sewing machine and had more hours of boredom than I knew what to do with! Sleeves were outside of my comfort zone, and zippers and buttons were a no-go, so I ended up with a hand sewn, drop waisted, wide collared dress that I could barely get on. I managed to squirm and shimmy my way into it! Not my finest hour, but I did kill some time.

Anyway... All that to say, there are people out there who can do it, but they are probably hard to find!

K, I've had a few items custom made and never wear them. The one shirt I passed on because the result was awful. The jacket turned out well, but it's too grey - and I'm just not into grey.

The style itself isn't that complicated but I'm not sure about the detail work at the neck and shoulder. It's that beading/jeweled/ embroidered neck and shoulder work which makes the coat so spectacular. The average tailor/seamstress armed with a Be-Dazzler isn't likely to be able to replicate that level of custom, bespoke work. Someone who designs and creates custom, hand-beaded evening wear would be your best bet.

Yes. I had a pair of pants that I loved and ruined with a squirt of Fantastic cleaning spray. Cleaning off my then-5 year old's (yes, I never forget a fashion mishap) painting easel. Took the pants to a menswear tailor - picked out the fabric, and gave it up to , well, God. Worked out beautifully. A good tailor can copy without an actual piece of clothing most assuredly. You probably will have to source out the fabric you want though.....
