Hmmm...never going to get away from 'fat' and 'middle aged' Im 51. But I would love to have people think 'well-groomed' 'stylish'-not trendy (nothing wrong with that, its just 'not me') 'fun' and 'quietly friendly'- I smile a lot, but am not very talkative....

Fresh, confident, happy, a little stylish, and ready to do whatever is at hand. That last one is actually the bigger challenge for me because living in the country means you never know what's coming - you might be at a business meeting one minute and wind up going over to meet their new horse or something the next. In the city I felt that I knew what to expect. Then again you're not exactly being judged for your fashion out here unless you are wearing heels and then people may definitely smirk.

Hmm, reading some answers made me think more about the why on mine

Not fat is pretty clear for everyone

But the fun one is because no matter how I dress, it doesn't take long for me to be understood as competent in my job. But I don't have to meet and convince new people, like a lawyer does, often. And so I would rather be a bit fun in my clothes so my competence doesn't put people off.

Another thought comes now...when I was young I had a cute sweet face which made me avoid wearing pink....didn't want to be sweet and girly. But now that I am older, pink is one of my favorites!

I was so planning to steal this assignment and post it to the discussion board, too! I gave it some thought and when I walk into a room I want to be perceived as...
confident, polished (both in the elegant sense and the savvy sense), and classy. And I never want to be perceived as someone who is trying too hard.

Nowadays, in most situations:
Approachable
Nurturing
Reliable
Competent
Fun
Calm

(I don't know that I'm all these things, but I'd like people to believe I am!)

Funny how a decade earlier, in my thirties, it was the opposite. I desperately strived to look older, serious, sexy, dynamic.

About a year ago I realized how in most of my wardrobe choices, these satellite ideals were eclipsed by one elephantine, Jupiter size concern: Not To Look Fat.

Now what is strange (and sad, when I think of it) is that I happen to be by nature a rather thin person - waifish even in my bad days, and who could sometimes benefit from a bit of bulk!

"Clothes should first and foremost serve to make you look thinner than you are!" Unfortunately that false precept had been carved into my brain from a tender age, now part of the background. It was due to culture, but also because my beautiful mother had always been chubby naturally and spent her time fighting it. In my case the idea was not so much to look for thinning clothes than to avoid "fattening" ones, a true faux-pas that would inevitably ensure you to be drowned in ridicule for the years to come as soon as you'd step outside.

I never really knew what such a fattening outfit would really look like. I vaguely imagined maxi-on-maxi; elastic waist; ruffle over ruffle; a skirt or pants with undefined, free pleats; big bold prints from head to toe. Oversized flat round-toe shoes.

In other words, a clown's outfit.

I had never given it much thought as I dreaded it so much. So I tried to focus on what could slim you in a garment instead. Long, vertical lines. Crisp material, smart classic cuts. Some heel. Not too many pleats, not too many prints, and, why not, not too many colours either. (Not too much fun either). Darker, classic colours such as: Navy, Forest Green, Plum, Black, Grey. Tucking your tops (I'm a long torso), matching, but not matching your top to your shoes as it gives the eye illusion you are shorter (therefore automatically fatter). Slightly roomier clothes sometimes gave the impression one was smaller inside them. So clothes that were too fitted were risky if not banned. Nude shoes, monochrome outfits, and the list goes on.

When I finally became conscious of this, it was a big turning point in my style journey. I have to admit that some bulkier, Maxi outfits make me feel out of my comfort zone, still. But realizing this has made me wear and love new combinations that I would have never thought of otherwise.

Hmmmm. I'm coming back to this thread now that I'm awake. It might be easier to analyze what people have *already* said about me or how they react to me now.

From new friends I always get, "I thought you were so perfect and serious before I got to know you. I had no idea how funny you were. You're not intimidating at all!"
This has always left me scratching my head. I do have a serious side, but perfect? Intimidating? Puh-lease!

People trust me right away. I can talk to a stranger for ten minutes and often they have the urge to tell me their deepest darkest secrets. I have no idea where this comes from. How do they know I'm not going to blab their business all over town? (I don't, of course!) Maybe something in the way I dress says I'm trustworthy?

I was at Salvation Army the other day (I'm not a regular there) and I asked to be let in the dressing room, which was locked. The checker couldn't leave her post, and started looking around to see if there was someone else to help me. There wasn't so she spontaneously took off her lanyard, with ALL of the store keys on it and said, "Here, just take these and bring them back when you're through." (!) I guess I don't look like a robber.

My kids' friends are usually afraid of me at first, but after they spend some time around me and see what a goofball I am, they always say, "Your mom is so cool!" Too bad *my* kids don't agree, lol! I'm okay with inspiring a little fear with this set. As MK said, I am not to be messed with!

So all in all, things could be worse. They could be better too. All of the men could swoon and all of the women could turn green with envy when I walked in a room, but is that *really* what I want? Not really.

Christieann, we're opposites! Here I am trying to look more serious, and you're going for more approachable. I think it's because I've spent my life trying to get people to take me seriously. I'm very tiny and I laugh all the time, so it's been an uphill battle trying to appear mature and responsible. I'm quite enjoying the fact that I no longer look fourteen. I mean, I'm not rejoicing in the knowledge that the facial lines are only going to get worse, but at least they call me "Ma'am" at the grocery store now. How I look is coming more in line with how I feel. I'm still pretty silly, and I may have the sense of humour of a twelve year old boy, but I am also responsible and capable, and I want that to show!

This is really hard!

I am going to shamelessly borrow a few that have been posted by others that resonate with me. I am totally open to better descriptors.

Approachable. I have gotten feedback over the years that I am a serious person (don't smile enough, etc.) and I suppose I have that element of efficiency and the work ethic that gives the unapproachable vibe.I don't smile when I am thinking and "going through my checklist in my head". Men seem to be told this less than women which truly bothers me. In any case, Approachable means wearing brighter color, a conversation starting accessory, something on trend, nothing uptight.

Relaxed (thanks Helen). I don't want to wear anything or give off a vibe that what I am wearing is a costume or part of an act. This could tie to my first adjective as well.

Modern. In the sense that I want to show that I can combine classic styles and neutrals with fun and sometimes boho elements to create a cohesive point of view. I may be overreaching and will just have to live with having a split personality of preppy/boho! I just think Modern means pulling together the best of what I have available. The anti-frumpy as well.

Hmmm. This is hard and I can't wait to see what others are thinking! Thank you Angela and Jayne and Claire for the homework

I did this exercise for myself about six months ago and said I wanted to be perceived as an "artistic professional." Which, as a professional writer, is basically what I am. The thing is, this could mean so many different things to different people. I need to dig deeper to get at what I'm really after.

So... deep breath. I think I would like my clothes and overall self-presentation to send the message that I am smart, energetic, sophisticated, and a little bit playful.

Am I there yet? Not sure, but this was helpful, similar to Angie's 3 to 5 adjectives exercise, and Shannon's "style rubric." My own style rubric might be identical to hers (structure, retro, urban, classic...those aren't her exact words, I suspect, I am missing something else for the "C"...). Anyway...the urban and the retro take care of the "playful" part. Not sure quite how to work out the rest.

When I walk into a room at work, I want to be perceived as intelligent, competent and classy. One of the problems of working in a support role in an office is people tend to underestimate you.I want the more interesting assignments, not the important but (to me) dull administrative tasks. I want to analyze, not just organize. Dressing a certain way has helped me achieve this time and time again. (Of course, my work product, not my clothes, is what keeps people coming back with those interesting projects.)

The secondary impressions I'd like to make are friendly, humorous, imaginative--but grounded. I do want to be liked, but I don't want to be a magnet for office gossip. Friendly...but professional.

My style for days off is a lot different and less well thought out. It's basically whatever will work for a MOTG.

Oh, fun! Let's see...when I walk in a room, I would like people's first thoughts to be that I look collected and self-assured. There's no one way to dress to achieve this end, though, I think. But style certainly helps.

As it happens, I am friendly and fun, but people don't need to know that right away. I don't dress in an attempt to look approachable. I would prefer to look a little more serious than I actually am.

Smart -- as in "stylish" and also as in "brainy"

Youthful

Fun/approachable

   but

Not to be messed with

   and also

Successful

Basically, I want to look like the Queen Bee! LOL

Hmmm . . . .

I think this is more of a psych exercise for me today.

The first few things that popped up were more cerebral than easily executed:

competent- even when I'm just at the grocery store, representing myself well, someone you'd want to hire, not someone you should/could play around with

creative- good problem solver, has a style point of view, is artistic

aware/in the know- inspired by the local landscape and cultures, practical, respectful of the "ultimate" clientele

Lol @ lamireille! I frequent those types of places too so I know what you mean! I have to remember my *real* life and not my *fantasy* life. Too funny about the high-collared faux fur capelet!

Jayne, I shamelessly told Angela i wanted to do her homework too. I have a hard time with this first assignment. What room? What people? I always imagine a large meeting room in an office building or a conference for some reason, and these do not exist in my life! Dr. Freud (borrowing from lamireile) why is this? And yes, I sometimes have that dream about showing up naked.

Hmm, for in one of the things I always want to be perceived as is 'colourful' which is my reaction to all the neutral colours I see in France!

'Outside the box' is what I thought of first!

Followed by 'not chubby or stumpy or frumpy'.

Finally, 'ageless' --- as in I don't want people to so much as think of my age, never mind whether I'm 'too young' or 'too old' for whatever.

(Everything but the second is going to be tough to define/interpret in stylistic terms, I'm guessing.)
