bj, I recall that for years, my mom had a drawer in the kitchen that was nothing but paper grocery bags, neatly folded and placed in the drawer standing up. It was like that my whole childhood and beyond--I did not understand what a luxury it was to have room for that in the kitchen!

Jaileen, DH and I carried our then one year old DS across the hot sand of a beach in one of the LLBean canvas bags. (We didn't want him to burn his tender baby feet!) That's how I remember how old they are! As old as DS +1 year!

I use Whole Foods reusable bags for grocery shopping, and I leave them right behind the driver’s seat so I can grab them as I head in to shop (although usually not at Whole Foods). We always travel for Christmas, by car, and I finally wised up and bought a few of Sierra Trading Post’s huge bags to pack Christmas presents. I also use them to return things to the Rack, etc. Out of curiosity, we had my niece’s 8 YO see if he could fit in one, and he did! And we could lift it up with him in it, so they’re strong, too. As for my handled paper bags, I give them to our food pantry. They use hundreds every month. (Each person gets two bags of food, and each bag is doubled.) Since they have to buy the bags, usable paper bags help cut costs. For plastic bags, I reuse them. I have two dogs. Need I say more?

Yeah, I've got the same picture, with a nervous cat instead. Taken right before I moved, where on I threw them all away except for the biggest bags - used to take stuff to Goodwill. I felt so guilty about throwing those pretty Anthropologie bags away! Now I always bring a reusable bag to the mall and ask the clerks to drop my purchases in it.

There is a certain size of sturdy paper bag with handles that I keep. They're just right to carry my lunch to work - Tupperware and odds and ends. The insulated lunch bags never are big enough. The bags at the tea store are perfect.

I think many of us can identify with your pic. Now that China has stopped accepting so much recycled waste, I try to always carry some type of reusable bag with me when shopping. The plastic grocery bags are the worst. Everything I buy seems to come wrapped in plastic. Especially online purchases.

Many years ago I met the Baggu girl. I was working as a cashier in a mad house grocery store (3000 produce codes to memorise, you had to be a botanist to recognise all the different veg - hardest job I’ve ever had, lol). Anyways, she was just starting out and gave me a freebie. I feel touched by fame! Lolol!

ETA: Was walking thru IKEA today, contemplating buying ANOTHER bag, when my brother whipped out this fold-up bag... and I realised I’d been talking crazy here: NOT Baggu, but Flip & Tumble! Boy, I don’t deserve promo items! I’m so bad... but my brother wants another Flip & Tumble. I’ll make up for it all by getting him one....

I’m so glad to see I’m not alone!

I did manage to cull the collection and organize them better. One bag for paper shopping bags, one for reusable totes (good god, how many times have I actually shopped at Lululemon??). My favorite big reusable bags are those burlap ones from Arhaus — wow, those are sturdy and HUGE. That’s like a valuable gift with purchase!

I already do use these for carting donations away. The ones I actually actively use regularly are in my car trunk for grocery and Target runs — I’ve gotten really good at remembering to take them in to the store. A couple of those are wearing thin at the bottom, so I’m replenishing them from this collection.

Our local recycling stopped taking plastic bags and wrap, so I have to colllect those and take them to Target or the grocery store for recycling. I try not to acquire more of those, but my husband always seems to bring in more!

I am putting some of the paper bags in the recycling box — we just don’t use them as fast as we used to.

I have a few of those Baggu totes that fold up into a little pouch that often stay in my purse for impromptu shopping — that’s cutting down on how often I get home with another bag to deal with.

In the coming year, I’m going to try to be even more careful about refusing store bags (along with single-use plastic ware and drinking straws). I’m glad to hear that Walmart is starting to phase out their plastic bags — I’ve been to some in certain parts of the country where it seems like the cashier will give each item its own bag!

ETA photo of the newly cleaned out floor of the coat closet. The plastic drawers hold my hats, outerwear scarves, and gear (hiking, running, cycling) hats, gloves and buffs/neck warmers. Ahhh, I love a freshly cleaned and organized space. I also donated six old huge umbrellas that we never use.

I do reusable shoppers st grocery store, mostly (I never run back to my car for them if I forget)! Do you see Walmart (I won’t go into a Walmart) is not going to offer plastic bags any more! Walmart! So you’ll have to bring your own, like Aldi. On my last visit to Chicago stores were charging for a bag, to encourage reuse. And even those “re-usable” bags, like lulu lemon, pile up. I mean who reuses those? I want to do better taking bags into all stores. And not always adding to the clutter. I no longer take a bag at a conference, because who needs another bad tote. I keep good shoppers, specially those with a sturdy bottom piece. Also have a couple insulated shoppers with zip top. Those are the best. I do use plastic grocery bags for dog poo!

i think am the last person who actually gets a newspaper delieved daily, so i have a great collection of those little newspaper bags, which unfortunately my curbside recycler will not take, so i have to remember every couple of months to drag them to the grocery store bin!

This must be a popular trend. Bags. I have bags. The majority are reusable and I do put them to work, but I have too many: bags for the groceries which are all folded into a large fabric tote and sit on a shelf in our mud room for easy retrieval. Then I have a tote full of totes on a closet shelf and another tote full of totes at work. I have a a few nice paper totes accumulated. Those live in the cupboard of cleaning products.
When retire I am going to give each colleague a tote and let them pick out items from my personal books and supplies to go live in their classrooms. There are sooo many things I will no longer need and not want to take home. Until then, I think donating some of my many totes will be a good way to start a new year.

Staysfit, do you have a dog? You could use the produce bags on walks. I put them around bowls of things I'm putting in the fridge, when I don't want to transfer them to a container that has a lid. Btw, I recently looked at your posts, because I know I can learn from you, and was sad to see you've removed photos.

Suntiger, I always kept the grocery bags in the car too. If I left them there, I made myself run out to get them, which cut down on the re-buying. When I moved, I used some for donations, and some to pack books in when I ran out of boxes.

Jenni, send mine on over!

LOL! I have the same bag collection! For whatever reason, bags seem to multiply, so I am constantly eliminating them and then they gather again, I keep the best three and recycle the rest. I only keep 5 grocery bags around because my recycles don’t need to go into bags anymore, they go right into the big bin that we drag down the driveway. I have reusable bags for my grocery shopping, and for mall shopping as well. I keep the paper bags in case I need something for transporting food or some other item to work where I will not be able to easily retrieve the reusable bag.

I also have a collection of the plastic bags used in my grocery store for veggies which I purchase there in the winter when my CSA doesn’t provide produce. UGH! Does anyone reuse these? I haven’t come up with any ideas! The store will recycle them, so I collect them in a grocery bag and once every other month return them.

Yep. Have found the same with my shifting house. Fabric type bags and large plastic bags absolutely everywhere! Have given so many items to hospice shops ( charity shops) and to clothing bin( mainly for rags recycling) that a large number have gone for that purpose, to put stuff in to take there.
However the funniest thing, and this only just occurred to me now, is the bagful of wine bottle gift bags. Because Neil and I both work in health, he as a veterinarian and me as a family GP, a number of patients/clients give us a bottle of wine as a thank you. We do like wine, and they often come in a pretty gift bag. So we drink the wine and I keep the bag in case I need to give someone a bottle. I just realised I have enough gift bags ( brought into the new house, what's worse) to give the whole of YLF a bottle of wine or yummy non-alcoholic drink each by buying out a whole drinks store!

Glad to see I'm not the only one. My stash of grocery bags is embarrassing, as every time I don't have any with me (which is 50% of the time), I buy 3 more.

What Kathie said. When all the bags somehow end up in the pantry, I divide them up again and put a bag of bags into each car. I like that my current purse has a nifty side pocket where I can stash a rather large folded up bag when I go shopping. Some places won't even give out bags - you have to pay for one - a couple of cents for a plastic one or several dollars for a recyclable one (MEC I'm looking at you!).

I've been using 4 ginormous LLBean canvas bags for groceries for almost 30 years and they are still going strong. The Lulu bags work for just about everything else.

Ah, the thrift stores will take most bags too! Plastic ones and the more sturdy recyclable types. So, pick a dozen of the best and pack the rest off! Use them to tote your donations!

I just realized this doesn’t count the collection of paper grocery bags in our laundry room that I keep for putting out the paper recycling. But most of the time we have a cardboard box or two for the recycling paper, so those bags slowly accumulate too.

Same here. A paper bag full of paper bags, a plastic bag full of plastic bags, a wide variety of reusable totes stuffed seemingly everywhere...

I have the same issue. But, by the time we’ve stashed some in each car, for groceries, and then I have 4-5 different sizes for when I walk to our little shopping area close by, there really aren’t any that I never use.
