Thanks, everyone. I am sorry I never got to write individual replies. Thanks for your photos of shorts and non-shorts. I am particularly reminded that I like what I might call a "safari-style" of structured shorts in jean or khaki with a wide leg.

I am also surprised, but encouraged that so many women are still wearing shorts as they get older. I think all the women in my life who are older than me gave up on them a long time ago.

I love shorts for our hot summers. Mid-thigh length is most flattering on me. I do find as I have gotten older I hesitate to wear them for activities like eating out, where I would have when I was younger, but otherwise I wear them all summer. Skirts and dresses with slip shorts make me too hot.

I only wear shorts for hiking and dog walking during the summer months. I like a length that ends about an inch or 2 above the knee. For other occasions and when it’s hot I’ve transitioned to skirts - at or below the knee, midi or maxi length.

To each their own in terms of fashion and style! I'm 56 and wear short-ish shorts (maybe a 4" inseam, always loose) to walk the dog and for gardening/yard work, but wouldn't typically wear them out and about, unless I was going to a very casual outdoor event and it was super hot. I absolutely reject any age-based rules, mandates, or judgments--it's an individual decision.

Ginger, have a look at Everlane’s A-line Denim Shorts. 5” inseam, wide leg openings. Looks like they only have black right now, but I bet they’ll restock other colors in the spring. They’ve been on my wishlist for a couple years!

Unlike a lot of commenters, I don't care how my legs look in shorts. I do care about not being too hot. Summer here is so hot, and so long, that it's either shorts or breezy skirts for me. I can't stand the feeling of tight hot denim. I grew up wearing shorts daily, so they're comfortable to me.

I think I get what La Ped said about the "tree trunk" effect. My legs are not slender. Bermudas (at least the modern skinny stovepipe cut, instead of the true voluminous cut) both look and feel horribly hot and constricting. I prefer flared legs and a shorter inseam. It's tricky to find them longer than a 4" inseam but I scrape by.

I haven't been able to make a Find yet, but my current favorites are by a juniors' brand called Rewash. The "Mom Shorts" are cut with nonstretch denim in front, and stretch denim in back. They work for my shape really well. I've already started to wear out one pair and have started looking for a replacement, but pickings are slim. If anyone has a lead on roomier denim shorts that don't have pleats, let me know!

I am physically and psychologically more comfortable in pants and dresses (worn with slip shorts) in summer. But I'm not in love with shorts as a style item either, so it's no hardship not to wear them. It's funny how people (ok it's just the one friend) might comment that I look too hot in my long, loose pants and sleeves, while I feel relieved my burn-prone skin is not exposed to the sun nor am I sweating where the hem of shorts touches the skin when sitting, which doesn't look comfortable to me...

I'm still wearing shorts and I'm 62. Most of my very small collection of shorts are on the dressier side and have an inseam of 4 to 7 inches. TBH, my preference is for dresses or skirts for summer weather.

I wear two styles of shorts - either Bermudas with about an 11 inch inseam or 2 inch short shorts - some with a bit of flare. Other lengths look weird on me. I try hard to not judge my body.

My legs are short, and stumpy but strong if I don't neglect exercising, so I look best in short and slightly voluminous shorts in a sturdy fabrication (like jeans or khakis). So, this is currently my favorite pair. I also have white denim shorts that I enjoy wearing.
it is not my best look, but our summers are murderous, I wouldn't survive them without shorts.

I wear shorts at home and at the beach. I don’t have good legs, and never have, but I don’t have any shame about showing them. And I don’t think anyone else should either. For me, the main issue is sun protection. If I wear shorts I have to cover my legs completely in sunblock, and that’s such a to do that I would rather cover up with a long skirt. So I only wear them indoors. I wear mid thigh, loose shorts.

In terms of vibe, I also prefer the look of a dress or skirt.

My mum wears shorts, including out and about. She is in her 80s and she looks consistently fabulous.

Roberta, I love your solution! What a great idea.

Like several of the commenters, I've never considered my legs particularly worth showing off, and they are even less lovely now that I am in my 60s and have some swelling on the knees due to incipient arthritis. Having said that, the best way to keep that arthritis at bay is to stay active, and so I do wear shorts and I can't see myself stopping any time soon. They are practical for me on my bike (which I use to commute on, here and there, and for exercise) and on my local suburban rambles, woodsy hikes, and summer beach walks. Like Harmonica, I've recovered from a meniscus tear (and am happy to be moving again!) and like Janet I take pride in my legs' strength. They go the distance and I am grateful for that!

Apart from workout gear (a different category) I tend to wear Bermudas similar to Carla's. While my proportions would be more flattered by a shorter pair like Sal or Roberta illustrate, I just don't feel covered enough in that length.

I rarely wear them in urban settings (only if I have travelled there by bike, really) and wouldn't choose them for socializing in except in the most casual situations. The one exception is a pair of sarong shorts (very old, from Zara) that I adore! They come to the bottom of my kneecap and look like a sarong skirt from the front. I still get compliments every time I wear these and they are so very versatile!

Love your solution Roberta!

I only wear shorts for cycling. Shorts are harder to fit than skirts, break up the body with horizontal lines, and more casual than I ever want to be. For hiking and paddleboarding, I wear skorts, or cropped leggings for the gym. The rest of the time, I wear skirts and dresses if it's warm.
I definitely don't think there's an age limit for shorts, just my preference.

At age 62 I am still wearing them, mostly at home but sometimes out and about to supermarket or shops or taking toddler granddaughter to playgrounds. I now feel most comfortable in ones just above the kneecaps since the bottom of my thighs have gone sort of floppy/wrinkly which I don’t like the look of much and prefer to cover. These are not easy to find. I have two pairs one white one silver, they are linen and crease a lot which I just live with. Our country is very casual in summer so you see people in shorts well into their 80s, and good on them I feel. I’m comfortable having modified the length a little.

Carol, I support anyone who wants to wear shorts at any age in any body. If they feel good in shorts and enjoy wearing them, they should wear them. They can be very practical in the heat!

Most of my clients wear shorts at some point. Some prefer them long and around the knee. Many prefer them mid-thigh length. Some shorter. Client ages run from 18 to 82. Some wear them in certain settings only. Beach, resort, at home, lounging, pool, camping, hiking, BBQ's. Others wear them out and about. Shorts can be VERY ventilating!

That said, shorts can be impractical on public transport. Your legs stick to seats. They can also lack the coverage you need in certain settings for sun and insects. And be uncomfortable in arctic a/c.

Personally, I don't think I will ever wear any type of shorts again. They were an absolute disaster when I wore them in hot and humid Greece last year. I brought the ones you see in Finds below. I am very sun-unfriendly despite ample sunscreen. My legs got a TERRIBLE rash from the sun because they weren't covered in the shorts. Same with my bare arms in long sleeveless dresses. (I wore sunscreen!!!). I could wear shorts at night but don't see the point of that either. I DID wear my sleeveless dresses at night. That worked!

I need a long sleeved long dress as a swimwear cover-up. Again, shorts were a disaster.

So, like cat2, I wear long cotton/linen pants, skirts and dresses in the heat. For trails and the odd bike ride, I wear long cotton cargo pants or jeans. I need to be covered for the sun! Very good for insect protection too. I am very happy with this strategy :)

I think I'm going to pass on my shorts. Or maybe keep one pair for paddling in the lake with the doggies in the shade!

Roberta, I love your tattoo story! I have a bunch of leg tattoos that I enjoy showing off during my brief New England summer season. Like Sal, I find mid-thigh or shorter works best for me. I have muscular legs, especially calves, and longer shorts can result in a bit of a "tree trunk" effect. I strongly dislike fitted/tapered shorts, and pretty much only wear loose billowy ones.

I never particularly liked my legs, and I also had a messy spider vein on one calf that I hated. I considered vein therapy for it, and then it came to me that if I was going to have needles stuck in my leg, I might get a tattoo to cover the vein. This worked really well and I became more comfortable with shorts as a result.

Others are correct in that it is often a case of finding the right shorts for YOU. Mine are a slightly shorter version of the Eddie Bauer shorts that Carla likes. And also I greatly expanded my tattoo after I retired and that makes me more likely to "show off" my legs.

I only wear very long shorts for running. No one sees them as we have a tread mill. Lands End has some at various lengths and I get the longest ones. They are nylon and have pockets. They are longer than some skirts. I also like skorts, skirts with built in shorts. I sized up to get the length. They probably will not fit this coming summer.

I am 70+,and have not ever worn shorts for years although I have good legs. Our summers are not very hot, so I get by easily with carpi pants and skirts. If I lived in an area with a very hot summer, I may think differently. I remember seeing old ladies wearing bikinis in Florida and thought they were brave. I do have a pair of long shorts in my swim capsule but they have not been worn in years. I will not be buying any more.

I skip shorts for flowy skirts and cropped silk or cotton pants. For hiking I wear capris or cropped joggers.

I'm not super keen to wear my shorts as much anymore as my legs aren't what the used to be now that I'm 60+, but when I do, they will be closer to knee-length and looser fitting like the find below.

I’m in my 60s and it gets very hot in the summer here. My philosophy is if you don’t want to see my legs, don’t look at them! The shorts I like are from Macy’s.

I agree with Jaime and Harmonica — age isn’t nearly as important as an individual’s comfort level. I say if you enjoy wearing them, rock them.

I have never loved the look of my legs. They are long and strong and I try to appreciate that. But they are pale, veiny, cellulite-prone, with frequent issues of keratosis pilaris on the thighs. Also, now saggy knees and generally not very shapely, LOL. I fully prefer to cover all that up. But I live in a climate with hot, humid summers and sometimes shorts are simply the most comfortable option. Also, I would never put on a swimsuit if I swore to keep my legs covered!

When I was younger, I sweated through some summers wearing jeans with tank tops. The older I get, the less I’m willing to suffer for some vanity ideal. So sometimes I feel like I just need to desensitize myself to the sight of my legs by wearing shorts from time to time. Let’s normalize less-than-spectacular legs being visible in public, yes?

When I do wear shorts, they tend to be either mid-thigh length, Bermuda, or even a just below the knee length.

I am in my late 50s and I do wear shorts. Mid-thigh like Sal's or longer. Not too short and not too tight. I live by the sea. If I still lived in Johannesburg city I would not. It is totally appropriate here. My legs have always been shapely but obviously there is now wear and tear. For now I am still okay about it.
