Lol Iron, I will start another thread instead of further threadjacking. I am a bit too short and round to be a model, lol. Vintage is a good tip-- I am a bit afraid I am a bit bigger than most ladies were back in the day though as far as height, shoulders, ect. I don't have a huge amount of access to vintage in my rural community to know though. It can also be a bit feminine for my style-- but gorgeous.

Dang, Elly, you sure you're not a model? You sound like Marilyn Monroe! I'm totally rectangular, so, hm. I would bump your Qs up in a separate thread.

I do know shapelier women who are friends of mine find that vintage clothing fits them better, back when women were supposed to be shaped more like you are. But they were in NYC, which was tolerant of that look.

Cold turkey SYC didn't seem to work for me. I've been allowing replacements and if the perfect item comes along. I am still in the midst of a complete wardrobe overhaul, so I don't have a year round weather appropriate wardrobe of fashionable and well fitting clothes yet. I think once the year round basics are in place for all seasons and capsules, I can begin to focus on a handful of seasonal upgrades instead of the cycle of constant shopping/feeling bad for constant shopping/declaring SYC/declaring SYC failure and starting over...

Thanks iron-- crashing the SYC thread I am (yes, tonight I am Yoda--- it was that or I had to play the villain again).

My biggest fit issues have to do with my long limbs and hourglass figure.

I have been really struggling with tops and pants.

I need LONG sleeves--- both long sleeved items and literally LONG sleeves. I struggle with sleeve length in non-tall sizes.

Broad shoulders-- I am a 12/14 through the shoulders, probably a 8 or 10 through the bust, and a 2 or 4 through the waist. The obvious answer is tailoring for woven items, but the sleeves and armpits on a 12 are too large and often make it difficult to tailor the bust. Everything looks like a man's shirt on me, and shaped shirts look matronly because they are obviously very oversized. This is particularly a problem since I need blazers/jackets and woven shirts -- I can't build and office wardrobe on t-shirts and sweaters (which are still tricky) alone in a cold climate and an interior work environment that is 63 degrees year around.

Large behind and thighs, small waist--- been having problems with slacks. I can have the behind pulling too tight in an 8, the waist would fit in a 2 or 4 (which is an alteration thing, but depending on the pants taking something from a size 10 to a 2 isn't always easy), and then I still have lots of extra front/crotch fabric because I have a larger behind than I do hip width, so the back of the pants need much more fabric than the front. I also need a 37-28" inseam to wear with cowboy boots or 2" heels.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just switch personalities temporarily? Right now I am in full-blown shopping mode and I am about ready to throw in the towel. I am a SYC girl at heart. I love style and fashion, I know what I like. That said, I would much rather remix within my closet and just wear and enjoy my existing beautiful things. I find that re-combining clothing in ways to create different feelings and vibes for different days and activities is enjoyable and creative. Selecting the types of pieces/overall vibe is too. I think the big thing is that I have no problem NOT shopping. I am a less-is-more minimal wardrobe girl and I don't believe in perfect. Two bigger/seasonal hauls a year with maybe a few bobs downtown for accessories in the boutiques or inexpensive fun purchase or two is enough for me.

I just struggle to shop-- mostly because of fit. I just received one of my last orders an my incredibly long list of orders and so far I am keeping possibly 2 pair of shoes and the halogen skirt WITH alterations (out of 16 orders that have arrived, 2 left to go). Oh, and some undies. Nothing else I have ordered can even be altered down to fit properly.

How about I SYC for you and you shop for me? Grrr . . . too bad it doesn't work that way.

Wow Vildy - 40 to 45 items a month is a lot! I used to get about 10 or 12 a month myself. I also did a self imposed budget this year, but in an effort to allow myself less, yet more expensive purchases. I can nickel and dime my way through $100, but have a hard time spending it on one item. I ended up buying about 3 to 6 items a month this way with the new budget. I include bras, running shoes, scarves, you name it. But not cosmetics. Like you, I have my certain products and just replace when they run out.

I've been Shop Your Budget since last winter. It's arbitrary and I don't need to do it but I prefer to do it. The main reason is that I'm fickle plus I don't really know what I want and like until I've worn it in. I don't happen to like the look or feel of Brand New Clothes. That doesn't mean I seek out damaged or distressed items, just that I want the thing to move with me and not surprise me by being unexpectedly constricting.

i prefer to shop in thrift stores, though not exclusively. I shop by color first. That means that I rarely shop online anymore, plus I hate paying for returns. Husband calls that "renting" my clothes. I also have taken a dislike to shopping eBay. I use it for browsing what other kinds of things a brand has, etc. But to me it all has an air of You Want This Bad Enough to Pay My Jacked Up Prices Don't You Now. I'd rather want things less urgently.

So, I have an artificial budget of @$50 month. Some months I am under and some over a bit. I was higher in June $99 and in July, when my few favorite thrifts were on vacation $175. This month I bought a fall fedora and a new winter hat, both of which I'd been on the lookout for, new and on sale. But it sent my month's total up to just under $80.
I don't count any periodic replacement underlayer purchases: bras, undies, socks, tights. I don't count the occasional shoe insole. I don't count the occasional new or replacement cosmetic.

I notice that with clothing I want new stimuli. With cosmetics, I pointedly don't want anything new. I would be happiest having an endless supply of just the few items I always use. I may expand the range to include different shades of eyeliner, for example, but I don't feel a drive to experiment. I do feel some drive to experiment with clothes and often wonder why I can't achieve stasis the way I can with cosmetics. It isn't a body image issue. I notice with cosmetics that when I at last find the shade of blush I want, I am satisfied. With clothing, success seems to breed a desire to replicate it.

I purge clothing all the time. I seem to acquire an average of about 40-45 items a month, though many can be small like scarves or a barrete. The thing I crave to buy the most is coats and secondarily jackets. I like clothing, but have little patience with shopping. I don't like to spend a lot of time at it.

There have been periods when I bought nothing for weeks or months at a time. I didn't see that I leaned anything from it. I do learn from purging my closet but that's more a matter of refining my choices.

Claire, that's a wonderful deal! $125 is a pretty big bonus for opening an account. As long as there aren't any major downsides to opening the account, you should do it. It is so nice of your husband to suggest you spend the bonus on clothes!

Rae, I thought about you as I was hauling things off to my eBay friend. She is a sweet girl, but doesn't have the marketing sense you do. I don't think is the one to maximize my profits, but I really just want these items gone at whatever price and I don't have the time to deal with all the photos, listings, shipping, etc. If it were possible, I'd have you selling for me - no doubt.

I will probably always be on SYB. And I don't even really have a budget...it's just whatever I can skim off the household budget each particular month. Hence my constant trolling at consignment stores with a few dollars in my pocket.

My dear hubby showed me a Chase bank flyer the other day advestising a $125 signing bonus if you open and use a checking account there for 6 months. He suggested I do that and spend the bonus on spring clothes next year. I'm actually considering it!

I am SYC as of yesterday. I am having a bootie issue (as I've belabored a few posts lol). So if I return these, I will allow a replacement pair. Skinny cords are already on the way in the mail, and that is IT until the end of the year. I may try to sell a few things on eBay. I did last month but only had luck with my NWT items so I lost interest.
Good luck on your endeavor! I'm rooting for you!

*resigned sigh* Last night, I carted off my items for resale to consignment and my friend who is an eBayer. Been meaning to do this for some time, but put off the cataloging and prep work involved. Donating and passing on to friends is so much easier!

As penance for my procrastination (and perhaps I am curious to see if I can do it), I am going to SYS = Shop Your Sales in that I will only spend what I profit from reselling for the remainder of the year. Yikes, I hope some things sell! This is my first attempt to do anything like this, but I like the challenge!

Items purchased and ordered prior to October 1 of course do not count, but I can not use the funds generated by returns of any of these items for additional purchases. More on this later. ;)

Who else is in? You can be SYC, SYB, SYS, whatever - share your story and strategy.
