I've been mentally pronouncing everyone's name right - probably because of my philly childhood. My DH would pronounce the names all "wrong" because he says tom-AH-to and I say tom-A-to. ;-)

My username does have a story, but it's been so many years, I'll probably tell it wrong. Someone (a blind date, actually) once told me this story - it was a hindu story or something like that (I may be misremembering - if anyone knows the origins of this story, please let me know). The story was about a boy who wanted a shiny penny. He was told he should just pray every day, "shiny penny shiny penny shiny penny." And so he did. Every day for days on end... until one day, he was praying and lo and behold on the ground he saw... a shiny penny!

I really liked this story and it kinda sums up my whole personality and life philosophy. I'm the uber-optimist, view my life as one long streak of (mostly) luck, and believe if you keep focused on the upbeat and grateful to the universe, good things come to you. I've had my share of drama and trauma and stressful circumstances, but it always seems to turn out okay in the end, somehow, some way. There's always a shiny penny when I go looking for it.

I'll second that emotion! I think Ana ( I've been pronouncing it wrong ) and Nicole both gice very detailed, well thought-out answers and suggestions- you can tell thye are both analytical. What is that ISFJ? I should have been a librarian because I love books and I am very shy-funny thing is , my Mom told me to be a librarian or a researcher when I was like 10- one of the many things I should have listened to.

Shiny’s real name is Jennifer. I think. I knew San was Sandy, so I had that right and I actually had Ana and Lannie right too. Fluke!

I’m Angelique, but it gets mutilated and forgotten and I can’t deal with that so I’m “Angie” to everyone in the world accept my Dutch Family, Euro friends and the whole of France.

Ana, I teach general psychology online for a local community college, and am not required to conduct research. Actually, I am adjunct faculty (part-time with no special title other than "Instructor"); I don't know about requirements for full-time faculty. I know my alma mater (Baylor) instituted a program by which faculty would choose between two professional "tracks," a teaching track or a research track. I would guess other universities may have done the same.

I was thinking Ann-a, but was sure I had it wrong. And I was thinking San correctly too. I assumed it was short for Sandra.

My son's real name is Lowell and it's pronounced LOW el. But in writing some people, especially US southerners, think it rhymes with owl. And my daughter's name is Mia--pronounced Mee Ah. But she get's called My-AH all the time.

Ana, I was wondering about the pronunciation of your name as well but I figured I would just ask you in person :). It's funny because although I know Ana should be pronounced, Ah-na, in my mind you have always been Ann-a. I would try to correct myself and finally gave up. I have a sister named Anna even though we are half hispanic.

San, somehow I just knew you were Sann. Or maybe I'm just consistent.

I too was a tutor in college-- for computer programming.

What a great thread. I'm glad we're learning more about the names. I, too, have mispronounced Ana's name in my mind. And of course I've been dying to know what shiny's real name is (I'm also curious how "shiny" originated, if it's not the shiny personality that we know you as :-))
Quite right, Ana, my name is pronounced more like "Ancha" than "Aunt-J". I know the "j" really throws off American tongues. Oh well, wish my parents had known that I would come to call the US home when they named me... We thought very hard about our daughter's name, wanting it to be pronouncable in both English and German. I always loved the name "Rachel", but you don't want to know what the Germans would make of it, it sounds real awful, so that was out. And I sure didn't want to stick her with a name like mine. But I'd never change my name, either, it just is part of me, so I bear with the baristas calling me everything from Angie to Onchie to - nothing - just staring at me with a puzzled look.

Ana, I used to tutor math, physics and chemistry. I think that with my current and future degrees physics or chemistry or both would be something I'd be qualified to teach. I will be trying to learn more about these pure teaching positions in the future. I have so far seen that some pretty good universities have a lecturer position, which is basically that.

P.S. It's Lan-nee (as opposed to Lahn-ee)... it's actually just a nickname for Alanna (uh-lan-a, not uh-lawn-a, just like Alannah Myles).

Actually, I think it's cool that you guys pronounce it a different way, I don't know--it's interesting and I like it.

What subject did you tutor, Tanya? I want to be a professor at a University or community college. Depending on the institution, sometimes you don't even need to produce any research work, just teach. A friend of mine teaches Government at the community college, and he gets to work at about 7:00am, but is done by 1:00pm and only works 4 days a week. I know he does grading and things too, but all in all, it's really not too bad a gig if you can get into it (and you actually like teaching).

Oh, I've been mentally calling you the wrong way too, probably that's the way it's pronounced in my country. But I'll change that now.

It is indeed awesome that you tutor. I used to that when I was in college, but have no time for it now but I'd love too. A big part of me right now is considering quiting
research once I'm done with my degree and becoming a teacher- either at a high school for talented kids or a lecturer at a university. I think it would probably suit my ISFJ personality better.

San, I've been pronouncing your name wrongly too, but I am correcting myself. You are the only San I have ever 'met' too.

I KNOW I'm miss-thinking some people's names. Antje's name is pronounced like, "Ancha" (I think) but I still think, "Aunt-J" when I see it. I'll have to practice it the right way in case I ever get to meet her in person (I hope I do).

Also, I'm not sure if San's name is "S-ann" or "Sahn." I think of it as "Sahn." And Lannie--"L-annie" or "Lahnnie." And Shiny--I'm not sure if that's her real name or not, but she will forever be "Shiny" to me, even if I meet her in person and find out her real name. I think it's so fitting, because she has a Shiny personality. :D

EVERYBODY asks me that when I tell them how it's spelled (even Starbuck's baristas), but nobody on here has asked, actually, you're the first Nicole! :D

I pronounce it like "Ann" with an 'a' at the end. I actually don't mind if people pronounce it the other way if they want, I'll respond to either. I used to work at a small music store (only about 25 people) and I had a fabulous coworker named Verna. She was in her mid-late seventies, about 4 feet high, stubborn and sassy as hell. Very authoritative, no nonsense grandmother type, but still really sweet, I adored her! She decided that she was going to pronounce my name "Ahna," even after she asked me how I pronounced it (end of discussion). It didn't bother me and after living as long as she did I figured she could call me anything she liked. What's funny is that she was the only one who called me that for a year, and then one day everyone started saying my name that way, after pronouncing it the other way for over a year! It was seriously, overnight. I never figured out why that happened, either.

Anyway, that's my name pronouncing story. There's a name spelling story too, since it's spelled the hispanic way but I have absolutely no hispanic heritage at all, but I won't bore you with that one, also! :D

I love that you were a writing tutor--I bet you were really good! There's a writing tutor I work with named Mary, and I think she's great. She helped me finish the crossword puzzle today (it was sort of slow in the lab).

Hi Ana!

You deserve your own thread cuz you're so Awesome!

Actually, I didn't want to hijack Angies Birthday Thread.

That's cool that you tutor. When I was in college, a bazillion years ago, I tutored several writing courses. It was lot of fun, and I made a little mad money.

I have a question that's been gnawing at my brain. Perhaps this has already been answered, but I missed it. Do you pronounce your name with a short A (Ah-na) or like "Ann" with an "a" at the end?
