These are all great looks to me, BlueJay. I'm a big fan of color columns, so I really like the burgundy and gray columns. I agree with others that you could use a belt with each one. I like the gray turtleneck on you, and I think the belt could help alleviate your discomfort with the look. And/or a pendant necklace. The outfits in 8-10 look sharp to me, and I like all the footwear options! The mustard skirt outfit is brilliant--so glad you felt fab in it, too.

Ladies, thank you so much for all of the great ideas and advice! It seems the consensus to add a belt to outfits #2 and #4, so I will definitely do that!

Olive Green, good idea about the shoes and pants! These pants aren't as exaggerated IRL as they are in my head. haha!

Dee, yes, I should focus more on hues of colour in the same outfit as I do find it makes for more interesting outfits.

Thanks UmmLila and JAileen!

Thanks Joy! Yes, I had forgotten that belts can add shine too and not just matte.

Thank you, Angie for your compliments, advice and ideas! Interesting to have a sneak peek for this year's spring trends and that they align to my preferences and items I already own so I can shop my closet!

Thanks Brooklyn! Yes, I love all the texture in your outfits! I really enjoy texture all year round too. I will have to refer back to your techniques when it is hot and humid here! I don't know why I forget that belts can be shiny? The tip about ribbed textures for tops is a fantastic reminder too!

Thanks Jaime! Yes, what are common themes that make good outfits?

Hi, I am going to give my first impression before I see what everyone else has to say. My favorites are 2/3 and 11-13. What do they have in common - color? texture? proportions? I am not sure. But it does seem you like some visual interest in your outfits, and are very sensitive to texture in particular out of your list. Interesting analysis!

Looking great Blue Jay!

I like texture too and think about it a lot when I put together outfits. Because it’s Summer here (technically early Autumn but still very warm), I generally add texture via beads or other jewellery, pleats, smocking or gathers, ribbing, braided or woven look items (bags, shoes, hats). Occasionally an open knit. I agree things can look flat without it.

I wonder if when buying knitwear you should focus on buying knits that have a good textural element. Even if it’s only just ribbing. That might help with the tonal outfits like the column of grey.

The burgundy column has heaps of texture and really only needs a belt or necklace for a little contrast. Don’t forget that metallic belts can add texture as well as shine. Looks excellent with the jacket.

Love the pleated skirt outfit. Pleats are so good for texture.

Blue Jay! How wonderful to see you post! Missed your outfits, and you're looking extra fab!

KILLER earrings and scarf additions. They add a glam, and polished finishing touch to every look. Goal achieved!

I'm writing the Spring and Summer Trends post for 2024 this week, and you're sporting quite a few of the trends - ahead of the curve :

Coastal Blues - light blues especially

Burgundy!

Grey (new dominant neutral)

Black shoes with skirts

Nicely done!

To answer your questions:

The white boots in #1 are KILLER perfect.

Add a belt to #2. One of your grommet belts!

I see a white or cream belt with #3, and the T-neck looks great in the pic. You can scrunch the sleeves too.

#8 to #10 work well! Slight preference for the cream boots. Biased!

#12 is KILLER. You aced styling the mustard skirt. That outfit loves you right back.

Please carry on!

Shopping, I first notice color, then shine or texture. I add interest most often with interesting shoes or pattern in a scarf. I agree with Dee. A belt is a way to add texture or shine too. #4 needs some finishing …, maybe a belt or patterned scarf or both. I like your plaid pants.

Some great outfits happening here. Adore the burgundy column, I’d simply add a belt to finish it off. Love the ink blue coat with it all too. I’d also add a belt to outfit #4 since you’ve done a tuck-in and that coat is terrific in #7, very elegant. I agree that the white boots in #8 really add some pop to the overall look. Your yellow pleated skirt with the black moto is a fun and chic contrast of colours, texture and styles together.

I don’t wear columns of colour too often but when I do, I tend to focus of combining various textures and hues of the colour to keep it interesting and maybe add some sparkle with jewelry or a belt.

That last outfit seemed to make you happy! The moto is a good look on you. You do maximal well.
I am a tonal outfit girl, and find that some trendy oppositional aspect, like directional shoes or exaggerated pants, is needed to bring it out of the ‘blah’ zone.
Your sculptural jewelry is excellent for that. Very mid-mod.

Thanks Phoebe! Yes, I was wondering about a belt too. Thanks for confirming!

Thanks Carla, you're very sweet! No, I don't have many shiny accessories like a bag or footwear. Maybe I will add that to a wish list as my black bag is starting to look worn so I am thinking of replacing it. I really admire your sense of style. I think you do use colours well, but also patterns too, such as in scarves and footwear which makes for good outfits. Your puffers have the texture of..."puffiness" and the wool of the coats and hats, and pleather are all texture that create great outfits. Yes, the Uniqlo bag is so great! It's light and easy for me to access things inside!

Suz, I must admit, I was eyeing your outfits with the Colette pants and white Ecco boots on the forum, we could be twinning! My pants are SO comfortable and I do agree that I like the structure because they're cropped. Yes, maybe the skirt outfit is the play between masculine/feminine as I do find my clothes could be interpreted more as masculine. I admire your style as well because you use colour and patterns well. It's interesting that you mention "movement" because I also like movement too. I'm starting to realize that diagonal lines are awesome! I notice that you tuck sweaters to give asymmetry and movement. It's interesting about scrunched sleeves and skin. I will have to experiment some more with this idea!

Thank you, Irina! Your outfits have such great structure and are so striking! Yes, I was wondering about a belt for the grey outfit. I was thinking it would maybe be too "horizontal" when trying to make a column? I do agree that a belt looks as though it is "missing." A navy hat would be great. Now would be a good time to look to see if I can find something on sale!

You wear tucked in tops plus belt really well.
I like #2, too, although I would try black boots that would not match the coat and a bag but rather go together. Or keep the burgundy boots but try a navy hat.

Colette fan here! Mine are velvet and yours are corduroy but aren't they great? I like this burgundy column on you. The shorter trousers add a bit of structure that compensates perhaps for the lack of obvious pattern etc.

I also like the version of outfit 8 with the white Ecco boots, but then I am a fan of those. I like with the burgundy boots as well, to work with the plum top.

And I agree, the longer coat in #7 is a fab look.

I can also understand why you enjoyed wearing the last outfit and got compliments on it! Great colours and proportions in addition to the textures/ shine etc, and there is also some juxtaposition between the "tough" leather moto and the feminine pleated skirt which adds another layer of complexity to the look.

I love columns of colour -- on others, mostly! Rarely, I will wear one myself. To make it successful on me, I almost always have to add some element like a printed scarf (pattern) and/or a cropped pant and/or scrunched sleeve (structure), or it just comes across (on me) as flat. Even with textural interest and/or a bit of shine, if it doesn't express movement somehow, I know from experience I won't enjoy wearing it. This is personal. Another person could wear the column without all those styling tweaks and it could look and feel great on them.

I don't necessarily think in terms of colour/ pattern/texture/ shine when I am buying a specific item, but I do think of it when an outfit feels "off," and I also think of structure and what I call "movement" -- my clothes need to suggest movement somehow, and that can be through line (e.g. diagonal or asymmetric lines) or through showing a bit of skin (scrunched sleeve, ankle) or some other way.

#2-3 and #11-13 hit the nail on the head. You have an enviable figure, so shouldn’t be shy regarding something like the body-con turtleneck. I’m wondering if the grey outfit, and #8-10 might need ‘shine’. Do you have anything patent leather (footwear? bag?).

When I’m shopping, I’m always pulled in by colour. Texture is an afterthought, and I can see how that aspect of styling an outfit is where I usually go wrong. Without texture, things can look a little flat. I need to affix a post-it on my wallet the next time I go clothes shopping - or set myself a task of doing a store reconnaissance with a view to looking only at textures as a kind of exercise.

PS: we are Uniqlo bag twins! Isn’t it the niftiest thing?

Feeling inspired today with posting some outfits I wore in January and February to work. Between work and fighting off viruses for most of February, I didn't feel the urge. Hopefully the post isn't too long and navel-gaze-y. Some outfits are hits and some are misses (IMO) and need "something." I have been really inspired with columns of colour, NOT being too matchy-matchy, layering, and improving my accessorizing game which I think perhaps may need some improvement. I think I like outfits with good texture as well as a good colour.

Pic #1: This was worn when we had a cold snap in January. I'm pretty happy with the layering and proportions, colours, and the textures of the wool sweater with the cotton shirt and wool pants, although I'm wondering if a pointy toed boot would have worked better for a "slim" idea? Perhaps not as comfortable.

Pics #2 & 3: Column of burgundy. I like the colour, I also like that there is texture as the top is merino wool, the pants are cords and the booties are suede. Maybe it needs something else? I can't remember which earrings I wore. I like it with the ink blue coat on top and matching hat. Worn with my ink Uniqlo bag (not shown).

Pics #4 & 7: Column of grey. I like the tonal greys with the white boots, but I think the outfit is missing some texture and looks too flat and boring. I really love varying textures in outfits. My daughter told me, "You look like a rock." ahaha! Too funny. So I doubled down on the rock theme and added "rock" earrings. Silver ring and silver bracelet. Black wool coat on top and black bag. I like the cut of the coat. I think it looks elegant and it adds some texture. Also, I'm not sure that a turtleneck is my friend. Maybe not this turtleneck as it makes me look busty (I'm a 34C).

Pics #8-10: I like this, it's simple and comfy. It doesn't have a lot of texture, but I think it makes up for it with the pattern in the pants. I enjoy that the white boots highlight the white in the plaid of the pants and is a more interesting outfit, IMO. It looks better than pic #9 which I think is too matchy matchy with the black boots and black pants, or #10 with the burgundy boots matching the plum top. What do you think?

Pics #11-13: Now this outfit I really love! Yellow isn't "my" colour, but I couldn't resist this skirt bought in 2020 because it's so cheery and has lots of texture! To add to the texture of the skirt, the texture of the cable knit sweater and the leather of the purse. I opted to wear tall black boots because I wasn't happy with the look of the "skin sandwich" with skin showing between the top of the boot and the hem of the skirt. Also, I thought the black bookends my hair. Clip-on earrings (vintage!) from my mom from the 80s. Black moto with lots of zips and snaps, fun colourful scarf and the "extra" earrings. I love how maximal this looks! I did receive compliments for this outfit. I need more fun and interesting outfits!

In trying to analyze why I like certain outfits I think in terms of colour, texture, pattern, shine, and adding a 5th element of structure, I think for me my preferences are:

colour with good texture

structure

pattern

shine (accessories)

I see that the columns of colour perhaps look boring, or maybe it's the "simplicity" that is a good thing. I sometimes feel I am of two minds with what I wear (quiet and simple vs maximal).

When you buy something, do you focus on colour, texture, pattern, shine or structure? If you wear a column of colour, how do you make your outfit more interesting?
