Echo, this is every parents nightmare. I am so thankful that she is well and now you know to always have an epipen handy. It is scandalous how expensive these treatments are, but at least there is treatment and so we must be thankful.

I am so incredibly glad that your story had a happy ending.

Oh, how lucky that she was home with you! Please follow up with an allergist and get tested for ALL allergies, not just bees. My DS developed an Ibuprofen allergy at about 12. We were advised that allergies can change in response to hormone levels, and having one type means you should look into others. He later developed shellfish allergies (around age 19) and now carries an epi-pen at all times.

Sending good wishes to you!

These allergies are scary and much relief for how quickly you were able to address this. Sorry for the ordeal. That is a tough way to find out about an allergy. Agree that consulting an allergist may be worthwhile; have been through multiple work ups with our kids and found it helpful to understand as much as we could. Epi-pens made quite a negative statement with their pricing policies; such a vital component of health care.

Yes, the drug industry needs some work for sure. Maybe as people become more aware it will force something to be done.

Thank goodness your daughter is okay. Good for you and your DH for reacting so quickly. I am extremely allergic to bees and stinging insects (wasps, hornets, etc). I was first stung when I was 4 years old. In the late 1950s they didn't have epipens. Epipens changed my life. I now carry 2 epipens on the advice of my doctor.
My insurance covers the cost of the epipens but they really should be available for those who need them.

Banting did not want to profit off of his discovery of insulin. He felt that was unethical. Don't get me started on that one!

Happy to hear that all is well . I would encourage your daughter to speak with an allergist and get allergy tested for bee stings, just to be sure. If she truly is allergic she can get allergy shots, which would reduce the likelihood of a severe reaction.

Earlier this year I had a reaction to antibiotics (rash over most of my body) except that I did not know which one triggered it as I started on amoxicillin and 4 days later I switched to clindamycin. It was immediately after taking the clindamycin that I saw the rash. Found out that I am not allergic to amoxicillin (penicillin) and decided that I was not going to get tested for clindamycin since that is one antibiotic which is rarely prescribed . I just have on record that I am likely allergic to clindamycin.

Good job reacting so quickly! Praise be.

But yes... The epi-pen pricing is a complete outrage, a complete scandal. $8 to make. List price for the brand is $700 for two pens. At half that for the generic, well, $300 is still absolutely price gouging. There’s no free market there when people’s lives are at stake. And don’t get me started on the vial-and-syringe thing. My healthplan wanted to kick me off insulin injection pens... insulin, 100 years old, $3 to make, over $300 a vial, no advances in 40 years... and many need several vials a month... and no generic allowed to go to market.

Our laws are being gutted from the inside out. How monopolies and price gouging go ignored, I don’t understand.

We had a very scary experience last night. As my daughter came down the stairs for dinner, she complained that she stepped on something. We looked, but could only see what looked like a little sliver, and we could not get it out, even with a tweezers. She sat at dinner, but was not hungry and went to take a shower. Not five minutes later she came out, wrapped in a towel and said something was wrong. Her face was swelling and her foot was angry red and huge.

I told her to put clothes back on immediately and my Dh took her to the hospital. But they didn't get far before he called 911 and the EMTs met him along the road. They administered an epi-pen and took her in the ambulance to the hospital. They hooked her up to an IV to administer more meds and kept her several hours for observation.

She was incredibly pale, and her eyes almost swelled shut, her ears ballooned, as did her lips, and she was entirely covered in hives. She swears that during the whole ordeal she never had difficulty breathing, so we're grateful for that, but there are never any guarantees if there are future reactions.

Most frustrating is that we don't know what it was. The doctor extracted what looked like a stinger, but even after searching the stairs and her room, we cannot find any insects. So we're operating under the assumption it was a bee. We now have epi pens and oral meds for her to take if there are any future reactions.

And last, while I am grateful to live in a time when science can give us medicines to stop reactions like this from being deadly, I am outraged that epi-pens (the generic versions) are $150 each when the vial of medicine and a syringe is $5. Small price to pay for the peace of mind the pen gives in an emergency, but it really is holding people's lives ransom. The medication itself isn't expensive, but the method of administration has people over a barrel because no one is prepared to use a vial and syringe when their eyes are swelling shut.
