It was in the early 19th century. Do you have a link to the New Yorker article?</p> <p>I grew up about 15 miles from San Francisco, but never felt an earthquake until I moved to Nevada. Several years ago we experienced a "swarm". There were hundreds of quakes in a three month period, but most were very very small. One was 4.4 that jolted me out of bed. We wondered if it was going to indicate a much larger quake. On the tv news they have shown graphs of flooding at various locations. This website shows points in the US where there are gauges. After you enlarge the map, you can click on one of the points and see what's going on. The color indicates the level of flooding, if any. It shows the actual and the forecast.
