Wow, great stories of clothing gone awol! My memory is of a pair of bowling-shoe-style oxfords I bought in Germany (my only trip overseas ever) in 2003. They were so fabulous! Perfect fit, lovely tan suede and smooth leather, leather soles even. Yummy! After wearing them frequently for a couple of years, one went missing. Sadly I put the other one in the box at the bottom of the stack. A few years later the missing shoe was found in suitcase I was going to give away. Also found in the suitcase was a pocket watch my husband had lost!

I always diligently search pockets of garments and thoroughly check the insides of totes or bags before donating - and I'm glad that was my habit then, too. I don't know if I've worn those shoes since, but they are luxurious and sentimental so still in my closet.

I have one for you: I've been going over my parents regularly to help clean out the house they have lived in for 20 years, and have been donating all my old clothes and things to charity. Last week I came home and there was a bag from the thrift store - with the pants I had just given away! Turns out my mum had gone to that huge thrift store, find that exact pair of pants, loved them and bought them - bringing them back to the house I had purged them from!

I'm so glad you found them. They sound lovely! I realized this winter I have a "thing" for gray sweaters. I can't pass one in the store without stopping to admire it, but I already have a nice collection of them at home.

This thread reminds me of when my younger daughter was very little and fairly consistently rejected the lovely, barely-worn things her older sister passed down. She was so insistent in not wanting to wear them that a couple of times she threw them away! I found most of the items and rescued them from her wastebasket, but I think one or two slipped through.

Last summer, I left an entire summer bin in the basement. I kept looking for my favorite asymetrical linen top, and just couldn't find it.

Finally found it and a bunch of tees I had already duplicated when I went to put my summer stuff away!

And then there is the story of my colleague of many years ago who lost a pair of lace panties (the only "pretty" panties she had). All of us in the following days kept asking her if she had found them. It was a mystery that lasted a long time. Then one day she had a light-bulb. It occurred to her that a few days before the disappearance she had replaced her washing machine. A technician had come to bring the new washing machine and take away the old one. Where, apparently, the panties had remained attached to the basket after washing. We all laughed imagining the face of the technician when he found the client's sexy panties inside the old washing machine!

I am often not too bad about culling items I'm not happy with, but I'm not good about taking the bag of culled items to Goodwill. I had a bag of clothes to donate that was sitting in my bedroom for a year. A couple of weeks ago, I decided I couldn't stand the clutter and was resolute about taking the bag to Goodwill. I did a quick once-over of the clothes currently in my dresser and threw a few more pieces in before taking the bag to Goodwill.

Just a few days later, I was looking at some fashion inspiration pics online and found an outfit that I wanted to copy. It used a red t-shirt almost exactly like one I already had, but I didn't wear the t-shirt much because I didn't care for it. Excited to have a use for the t-shirt, I went to my dresser to find it and create the copycat outfit...only to find that it wasn't there. I apparently had edited it out of my closet and threw it in with the Goodwill donations, which I FINALLY had taken to Goodwill after a year.

It has been great to read all these replies after a stressful day at work. Now I find myself wondering if I sleepwalk?!

I suspect my DS may have rearranged some things in his effort to pack for University this summer. He’s the most likely person to move a large stack of grey cashmere sweaters from one place to another without any recollection of doing it. He also is the type of person who would abset mindedly move someone else’s belongings and forget to tell them. He will be the first to apologize, and it’s true as he frequently says “I can’t remember what I can’t remember”.!

I’m going now, to check my freezer to see if I can find anything interesting that I may have left there. My Fit Bit is still on my wrist, but I recently found a clean pair of socks. In fact, socks seem to end up in my freezer fairly often because I am often holding a clean pair as I open the freezer to grab ice for my water bottle after I do my Pilates workout. I must be pretty tired then right!

Joy, I've lost two designer items and a favorite white shirt through that same problem of plastic bags (perhaps) mistaken for trash. I used to use old Gap plastic bags to carry clothes when I was traveling back and forth between SF and Santa Cruz. My best guess is that something was thrown out or maybe fell onto the sidewalk near my car. It's been a few years and I haven't quite given up on finding them... New rule for myself - no clothes in plastic bags.

Oh my goodness you ladies make me laugh with some of your posts on this thread. Thanks I needed that after starting my day at 7am shoveling 20 inches of snow!
I am so glad you found your sweaters, hopefully you will be able to get at least one wearing before you have to put them away for the season.
I hate when I lose something and think I am losing my mind! I had a summer shirt I loved but really needed to let it go. Before I did, I got this brilliant idea to "copy the pattern" in hopes I could replicate it. Put it on the pattern paper, then got distracted. Later that day I had to put it away- rolled it up in pattern paper. Holiday season came and had to store craft things away to make room for company. Summer came- no shirt and no memory of pitching it. Thank goodness a gf needed to borrow a roll of pattern paper. Mystery solved.

Well, I don't have a lot of clothes or space, so I never lost or forgot any clothes in my own closet. But I had been in the opposite situation. I once went to a yoga class with "oddly large" gym shorts just to realize, in the middle of my class, those shorts weren't mine. I have a roommate so I assumed they were hers, but they weren't hers either - some random gym shorts just appeared in my closet, out of nowhere (I still don't have a clue where they came from).

Been there, done that. I have a lined, hip length heavy raincoat that I’d misplaced for about 9 months. Now, mind you, I actually have grown to really dislike this coat - it’s extremely functional and well made (why oh why won’t it wear out?!) but I have come to loathe the drab gray color of it. Just when I thought I had the perfect reason to buy a new one, it turned up in my mother-in-law’s closet! Now if I could just misplace it again...

Currently I have no idea where my puffer is. Once I “lost” my raincoat for many months, looked everywhere, etc. My kids only went to the after school program a few times a year when we needed coverage for some reason. Towards the end of the school year the lost and found box was out near the door. On a lark I checked the box in the highly unlikely case my kids had left something. They hadn’t, but there was my raincoat.

The problem is, i KNOW this so will go through the closet rod item by item , look on floor, etc maybe 3 times, be totally frustrated and perplexed, and the next day Take “ one more look” and there it is ( slipped off hanger or is on a different size hanger that hangs lower). But I could not “ see “ it the times before.

This is indeed worth looking into! How strange but luckily you realized this and found them. Someone for sure thought it was ok to move your clothes but it wasn’t, because as a result you didn’t have then when you might have needed them. Or another possibility: could it be you’re a sleepwalker and you secretly hate these sweaters?

That's pretty funny! I was making plans recently for a striped shirt that I had held onto for years, even though I wasn't wearing it. I loved the fabric and couldn't part with it. So I was planning how I was going to use it in a sewing project. When I went to get it, I couldn't find it. I guess it finally did get into the donate pile last time! I went to Goodwill to get a shirt for my project.

I haven't lost anything but I had an embarrassing moment with a found item. I headed up to Helen, GA with a friend to do some Christmas shopping and didn't have a hat because I forgot how much colder it is in the mountains. I happen to remember my nephew (home for Christmas from college) had left his Christmassy looking stocking cap in my car so I ran back, grabbed it, and put it on. I noticed people kept looking at me and smiling but I just thought everyone was in the Christmas spirit that day. My girlfriend and I didn't figure out what they were smiling about until she snapped a pic of me and posted it on FB. A few minutes later my nephew called my cell to ask if I had taken a close look at his hat. I hadn't. The pattern was reindeer having sex. That's probably the most likes and comments any of my FB pics have ever gotten. I was walking around Helen, GA with that stupid hat on all day and there's even a FB pic of it for posterity.

For me, it might be a good thing if I had to go through an entire season without grey sweaters. It would help me to lose dependency and grow as a person.

Oh yes, and more than once. It happens most with clothes bought at the end of a season that get put away for the next year. Totally forget I have them. I can say it doesn't happen now that I've reduced the size of my wardrobe ;)

Yep, I accidentally gave away a pair of Lucy yoga pants my husband had gotten me for Christmas thinking they were an old worn out pair of Old Navy ones... only to discover the Old Navy pair in my drawer the day after I donated the bag of clothes

Happy you found your grey sweaters!

And yes, I've had strange moments. Like the time I lost a coat for 2 years!!!

It was a favourite, a very useful London Fog red duster rain coat with a quilted black liner -- you could wear the parts separately or together.

We'd moved. We thought we had unpacked every box...and we had indeed opened each box. One box contained some rugs we had no space for, so we'd simply opened, looked inside, and put it under the bed for storage.

When my stepdaughter moved back to our city, we offered her those rugs for her apartment. Opening the box I found we had shoved my coat in there, apparently to fill up the last bit of space in that box....
