Thanks all that mentioned my points - they have been swirling around for some time obviously! I am sheepishly in approximately the same level of caffeine right now as when I wrote my first comments, and Una your last pictures reminded me of something else - the first few times I saw my head in the harsh light of a dressing room I recoiled (yours looks gorgeous to me in both pictures btw). I often think of A Streetcar Name Desire and the importance of the right light as I age. And not just regarding my hair, obviously.

Angie, you made my day - I can't wait until I tell my family you want to clone me. I am laughing at their reaction already!

ETA - Thanks Sarah for your super sweet comment!

Una, your grey looks fantastic. I'm so excited to see the "full effect". Way to embrace what feels right to you.

I also have remark that Shevia's grey is sooo gorgeous on her, especially with her current 'do.

Rachy, about 4 years ago (age 52) I started losing a lot of hair. It lasted about a month, and I don't feel it grew back. Then I got another bout of hair loss a year or two later. I am on replacement thyroid meds, and have it regularly checked for proper dosage, so it's not that. It's aging. I have no gray hairs, but have been affected by the thinning hair thing which IS aging I think. Thankfully it has stopped, and I don't have bald spots but this is one of the reasons I don't do highlights which would surely punch up my overall look. But, the chemicals could further encourage hair loss.

Apologies for the cross talk Una. I do think your hair is so thick that it looks fantastic any way you color it. I look at thick hair like yours and drool.

Yes! I agree with all of Shevia's wise points, and hope to espouse her attitude and philosophy (and ability to function so well without caffeine!).

However, I don't know that it's disingenuous to post inspiration pics of younger people with grey hair, any more than it's disingenuous to post inspiration pics of outfits on young, tall, thin, blonde models. I'm not expecting miraculously to become the model in either case. Whether it's realistic to aim for that color to be natural is a different and totally reasonable question. Hopefully, I will find out the answer at my appointment today!

And Jules, exactly. "Cool" is an overwrought term at best, and hair is not the hallmark of it.

For before/after documentation, my own head so far, with and without flash, with bonus Harsh Line of Demarcation! The second photo is probably more accurate for natural light, and the red is faded out blue (however that works).

Jaime, YOU ROCK. Can I clone you? What a brilliant set of points - and sans ample caffeine too.

Una and Anna, I think Kelly Osborne dyed her hair grey shortly after Kate Moss did - and she's in her 20's. I've seen lasses in Seattle do it too - but with lots of black parts still in their 'do. There is no mistaking that they are young and trendy - and that the hair is deliberately dyed grey. I like Echo's description " privilege of youth" too.

Jules, welcome back. Good points.

Thanks for the link Una, I personally do not see grey as cool per se but I do know plenty of cool people who have a full head of grey hair.

What I do find cool is the societal change which is slowly occurring; concepts on age and gender are being challenged in a way I find very exciting.

Oh my I have a lot of thoughts regarding this. And it is early so I am not at the peak of organized thinking (that is a few cups of coffee away at least). Regardless;
1. Totally agree that fake grey hair on a young person is quite different than real grey hair on an older person.
2. However happy I am with my hair, and I am, it is a fact that I would look younger to many people if I colored my hair. No my wrinkles would not magically disappear, actually they would look worse next to dark hair, BUT we are conditioned to associate grey hair with a certain (older) age and many or most people read a few cues when they glance at you and make a split second impression. Grey hair will tilt that towards older.
3. Which is why I say bring on the trend - the more people are conditioned to see young people with grey hair the faster the automatic association between hair color and age will fade (ha ha).
4. I do think many people, including myself, look healthier and more confident with grey hair. For me the choice is not gorgeously colored hair vs. grey hair. It is dried out unhealthy hair with visible roots at least half the time vs. healthy looking hair.
5. I do think that many other people, with different coloring and slower growing hair, who have the means to keep up a good hair color look fantastic that way and would not encourage them to stop at all.
6. A good haircut is key to my feeling good with my hair. If every person who has stopped to ask me who does my hair actually followed through, my haircutter would not have time for me!
Ok, this is already too long and it is time for a refill. Sorry for going on and on!

I have to agree that grey hair on a youthful, unlined, 20-something is a "privilege of youth" and almost completely unrelated to actual grey hair. Both can look great, but to post pics of very young women as "inspiration" is disingenuous. At 44, I will simply not look like that when I grey, so I won't keep pictures like that as "inspiration". They aren't actually grey; they're just pretending, and I think that most people can tell the difference at a glance. Again, that's not to say that natural grey/white is not beautiful and cannot be stunning; it is just so completely different from the "fashion colour of the day" as to be unrelated.

Good comments here. I agree with Janet, but at the same time I don't feel bitterness at the inevitable results of having lived to be 50 (well, in a year) - I've lost some people that would have loved to be old enough to be grey and wrinkled.

Part of it IS laziness for me - I just can't seem to get to the stylist as often as I'd need to, and the time and money spent could be used for other things.

To me the key is what suits you personally and the ability to choose it. If it drags me down when it's all grown out, I'll happily color again. But I have a feeling I'm not going to hate it.

Angie, I do remember that! It's just been so much more in the forefront recently but that was probably a turning point.

Rachy, for real? That's a concern - thyroid check?

And Marley, I have seen you and I forbid you to describe yourself that way. You are one of the coolest people I know style-wise.

I think the grey hair trend on fashion forward youngsters (for lack of a better word) started even earlier than that, Anna. When Kate Moss dyed her hair grey before she was 40. Do you remember that, Una?

The grey hair on young-uns trend started at least a year ago. That grey is a completely different beast than real grey hair. It just seemed to be the edgier version of lilac hair.

I hate my grey hairs because the grow out differently then my normal hair, all curly and kinky. Plus they stick out all over the place. Had they grown normally, I would have totally embraced the gray. Such is life.

These are all great pics of young women sporting the latest "thing" - gray/silver hair. But I don't buy it for a moment that I would look that great if I were to go all gray/silver. I'd still have the wrinkles, sagging eye lids, and chicken-skinned neck - and so I'd never be able to project that edgy coolness that these beautiful young things can do!
Let's talk to them in 30 years and see how cool they think gray/silver hair is then. (Am I bitter? Yes, Yes I am!) ;-)

Team Janet.

I started going gray in my early 20s and stopped coloring for a while in my 40s. Changed back after reading an article about how gray hair was "cool," complete with Photoshopped pictures of middle-aged-and-older celebrities showing what the gray haired ones would look like if they dyed, and what the dyers would look like with gray. Every.single.one. of them looked younger and, to my eye, better with colored hair. I made an appointment at the salon that day and have never looked back.

That said, I am sure you will look super fab with gray hair, Una. You have an edgy style and a distinctive haircut and a youthful face.

The article quotes a stylist (from a spa I've actually been to): “If your decision is about freedom, that’s one thing. But if your decision is about being too lazy to go to a stylist and color your hair every four weeks, then that’s another.” That makes me really angry. Not wanting to spend $100 a month on your hair, not wanting to take a couple hours once a month, not valuing brown hair more than grey hair... none of that is "lazy."

I think Steve Martin was totally grey (or is his hair white?) by his mid twenties. And then I remember this ballet called The Girl With White Hair. So I don't think of it as being some sign that a person is over. What I do think, because of its suggestion of age - and of course it's got that - is that you can wear some pretty whackadoodle things and still seem dignified - so I can see how it would be a trend esp. because of that.

Totally OT: I'm worried that instead of turning grey, my hair is just falling out. OMG!

I have that short cut in my pins, too, Una. Mine would certainly not look like that because it is so much lighter. But I know you are going to look amazing with the grey.

I believe that an edgy (or precision) cut, fashionable clothes, great posture, and a big smile go a long way. They may not make us look "young" but they make us look good, and that is more important.

I hate my white hairs, even though I still have only a small percentage of them. I plan to cover up the evil as long as possible, as the white hair is not a good look up against my ivory skin. Just sayin'

What Janet said! :/

My percentage of grey is still low.....I don't plan to stop using a demi to blend it in any time soon.

Just hoping wrinkles get there real soon in the cool factor department!

I agree with the statement near the end--attitude and presence have more to do with looking young than hair color. It's hard to get rid of stereotypes when we've convinced ourselves that having grey hair makes us look old and faded.

Interesting! I like the pics you posted and wish my roots were dark and the grey was just for effect! I do love that silvery color and how sleek it looks. My greys are like barbed wires.
