Emily K -- that is exactly why I very politely dissuade sales people. Even with they best of intentions, they don't help me and I always free so pressured.

I've been trying to buy a tee shirt that is lightweight, slubby, OPAQUE, and flattering. It has been a difficult task and drove me to shop at Goodwill (where I bought something!) and to place an order with Eddie Bauer. I bet I tried on about 50 or more shirts. Why? In part because I was ineffective at dismissing the sales associates at Ann Taylor and Nordstrom. I tried to get into the dressing room with my choice of one or two shirts that appealed to me and, before I knew it, they were bringing in armloads of the most appalling items. Most, I tried-on out of good sportsmanship and the thought that I might find a new-to-me silhouette that I liked. No. It was all just too much. The styles were bad and unflattering. I have NO IDEA why anyone would have chosen those items for someone of my age and shape. I got overwhelmed and frustrated and left with nothing. I understand sales technique, but this was just a waste of everyone's time.

Edited to correct J. Crew to Ann Taylor.

I have little faith in most sales people or store owners' opinions anymore. I did when I was a lot younger, and easier to dress, and maybe I'm just cynical, but I truly trust my own eye and I'm batting over 500 so that's good enough for me. I was really gutted when I witnessed the owner of my favourite boutique sell a woman (whose husband was treating her for her birthday) anything and everything she could squeeze into , regardless of flattery and suitability. The bill came to $38k. The owner seemed to be taking advantage of a big wallet and that kind of did it for me in terms of respecting her opinion .

I watched "scatter my ashes at bergdorf's" and loved seeing Betty, and seeing her co-workers talk about her. They broke the mold when they made that one :-)

I worked in a small boutique for a while in the early days of the new millennium, and the service in that shop was generally good. If the owner's wife wasn't around we were able to REALLY help the clients, but the owner's wife was pushy and good at lines and unimaginative at making outfits. There were no limits on how many garments you could take in the dressing room, and mostly everything a client bought went out the door on hangers in dress bags, not folded or crammed into a plastic sack.

Retail these days has gone to sh*t in far too many stores. I kind of hate going shopping at brick and mortar stores anymore, because it's: a sea of sameness, staff is either pushy or disinterested, there's limits to how many garments I can try on, etcetera etcetera etcetera

I've had to educate myself on how to read size charts, how to read item descriptions, how to read between the lines in item descriptions, how to have a critical eye when looking at pictures of garments online, and that Etsy is a wonderful place to go for personalized service and personalized garments.

So I guess I've had to start becoming a little bit like my own Betty, and it's exhausting.

Similar comments occur when I return items, such as "that is so cute, or unique, or we don't have that one in the store." I think it's intended to make me second guess my return. Often it is easier to order online and retrurn online if needed, and just use my husband as my sounding board!

I can't count how many times I've heard "that looks great on you." That statement falls flat to my ears by now.

Nice article. There are sources I buy from whose honest feedback I've come to trust. As for the persuader lines, the one I hear most is "Not many people can pull that off!" It acts like a dog whistle on me because it's usually true, but I'm getting better at walking away from it. Just because I can, doesn't always mean I should.

There's a local boutique that I visit once a season. I'm always helped by the same SA, who pulls lots of things for me to try. She has gotten to know my style really well and always listens to me. She's a gem.

I can't tell you how many times I heard a sales associate use the persuader lines on me and others in hearing distance. I know I stopped listening to them long ago.
