The book Isis recommended is a good one. Since you don't know much about your machine, it would be a really good idea to either take a class or enlist the help of a friend who knows a little something about sewing,

If I were you, I'd probably start with a skirt with an elastic waistband and no zipper. The first pattern in Sew What is good.

Another alternative, and equally easy, would be a wrap skirt. There's also a pattern for this in the Sew What book.

The Crescent skirt from Sewaholic patterns is a bit more complicated, but Tasia, the owner walks you through every step of the construction in her excellent tutorials.

I'm not sure which pattern catalogs you have access to where you live, Ottobre publishes a few magazines of women's clothing patterns, but they're generally more advanced and don't necessarily spell out every step.

http://www.ottobredesign.com/

Same thing goes for Knip Mode, Burda, etc.

You can download some patterns from the Burda website and print them out, which has its advantages, but I didn't see anything at first glance that might be good for a beginner. It wouldn't hurt to take a closer look though:

http://www.burdastyle.com

Feel free to PM with any questions about specific projects!

My friend has been sewing skirts from this book (Sew What skirts: 16 simple styles), and they look great.:

http://www.amazon.com/Sew-What.....1580176259

It's aimed at rank beginners, and you make your own pattern.

If you google around, you can find a lot of pics of skirts sewed from this book.....

Missvee- yes a course might be an idea for sure, since I don't even know how to use my sewing machine correctly.

Hi Jayne I can't give you a specific pattern number, but why not head to a fabric store and take a look through their pattern books. A simple A-line skirt is very easy to make - it's just 3 seams, 4 darts and a zipper. It might be a bit tricky if you have never sewn at all before, but there must be some beginners classes that you could take. I think that would be the most fun way to start - learning with other people. Good luck!

I am getting impatient for midi skirts to come to Norway, and asked a friend who works for one of the biggest chain groups here (for Europeans Bik Bok, Cubus are part of them)...and she says Midi's are not coming here. So I am now tempted to learn to sew just so I can have a midi or two in the colors I like.

Could any of you who sew give me a starter type of skirt, nothing but simple panels I hope, to get me started. I am looking for a not too full midi, like an A line.

thanks
