Maya, I guess I missed the fact that you have an internship/job since this occurred while I was out of town. That is AWESOME! I hope that when you role gets more settled, you are able to achieve your goals and develop some great portfolio pieces.

(The shoe collection is incredible. Lucky you for being able to see them!)

Well, she knows about my experience. She has my resume and she knows I have been out of school for a while and that I have had paid work in the past. I don't mind doing some grunt work, but I didn't realize this was a permanent thing until she gave me a bulleted list of my job duties, none of which involved actual designing. This does not match the description of the internship nor does it match the description I was given at the interview. She just doesn't know that because she wasn't there.

She is not going to be there next week, so I'll be working with the guy who interviewed me. I'll just ask him about it--not in an accusatory manner but just as a matter of clarification.

Well Maya, it seems to me that you just need to sit down & explain your concerns and expectations in a clear but diplomatic fashion. My suggestion would be to frame it more in terms of what you have to offer rather than what you want to gain. Certainly, if she is aware of your areas of expertise and breadth of experience, she might give you more meaningful and challenging tasks to complete. The other thing is that since you literally JUST started, she might be trying to gauge what your capabilities are before deciding how much responsibility to give you.

Ele & Dawn, isn't there also an exhibit of Audrey Hepburn's clothes somewhere? I saw something about it on BBCI here but I caught it in the middle so I wasn't sure exactly what it was. If I could I would fly out there in a jiffy just for that!

Shana, I think there has just been some miscommunication. The person I interviewed with is not the person I'm working with, so I don't think she has any idea what I'm trying to get out of it. Basically I just want portfolio pieces and real experience. She has me creating mockups, looking up images, and making small edits, which is fine for a very inexperienced college students, but I have paid those dues already and technically I have enough experience for a paying job, so my concern is that this will end up being more dead-end unpaid work (and not even for college credit). I can't be bothered with that. It's too much of a financial and time commitment. If I don't get anything to show for it in my portfolio, why bother? I know the other interns have done "real" work so I think and hope I can work it out somehow.

Maya, before I saw your last post, I was going to say what an amazing internship this is - the Dior exhibit sounds fabulous. Despite the issues, it sounds like fun and like Angie says, at least you are getting out of the house (and your lounge clothes!).

Ele, I love the V&A and I should be over sometime during the summer so I'm putting the Grace Kelly exhibition on my priority list for the trip!

Not to sound like a wet blanket, but the internship hasn't been great so far. I won't go into it now but I'm a bit concerned so I'm going to talk to my supervisor next week. I think once I clarify a few things, it will get better though.

This particular experience, however, was fantastic!

Julie, the assistant at the costume institute would have fainted if I touched anything and probably banned me from ever entering again. A lot of those shoes are solidly enclosed in plastic molds to prevent any handling at all. The rest are only to be handled by the department, with special gloves, and we were not allowed to use flash photography. I know they're not all that old, but they did look extremely delicate. I'm not even sure how women wore them. All the intricate beading, feathers, lace, and other froufrou details surely would have been ruined in due time.

Wow, Maya. That sounds like an amazing way to spend a day- I'd be in heaven!

The Chanel exhibit sounds incredible- I wish I'd been able to see that. I love the Met, but rarely get to actually see all the amazing things they have there. Luckily here in London we have the V&A, which I love even more (if that's possible). In the spring they're having an exhibit on Grace Kelly- lots of her clothes, including her wedding gown, will be there. I can't wait!

I officially started my internship at the Met (which I actually didn't qualify for as I have been out of school for a year, so instead I'm performing the same role as a volunteer...which is in fact a much better deal).

Anyway, my supervisor had an appointment at the costume institute to photograph some of the shoes in the collection. The embellished shoe Christmas cards are a big seller at the gift shop and she is starting a new design this year to be sold in 2010, so the pictures were for reference.

Anyway, I got an exclusive look at a bunch of ornamented Dior shoes from the 50's-60's. They were so stunning and beautiful (but looked terribly painful...though who cares?). I wish I could reproduce them in my size. They absolutely belong in the museum. They are works of art.

http://www.metmuseum.org/works.....&vw=1

There were also racks and racks of clothes from YSL, Chanel, & other fashion giants dating back several decades. Actually, a few years ago, they had a Chanel exhibition that I attended and it was superb. I'm crossing my fingers that I will get to help with the embellished shoe Christmas cards. If I do, you'll all get one next year!
