Fruitful, you might be too young and by the time you got there it was all cleared out. I used to do a lot of thrifting when I was about 16 onwards. I am 46 now and I would find really amazing 60's structured dresses and mens tuxedo jackets and mad coats. Crazy 70's jersey dresses. Sometimes my sister and I would even get 1930's clothes like skirts cut from a full circle of fabric. I dont find it easy now in thrift stores becasue the clothes from about the 80's onwards weren't well made to begin with. I think the good stuff now is in the vintage shops.
I really love a good white shirt so I particulary enjoyed the Patti Smith one. I have an excellent mens shirt I got at a vintage shop for about $30. So beautifully made, quite long, lovely cotton. And it had barely been worn. I wondered about that shirt too No.2. The victor and rolf stuff she mentions is mad genius. and I had forgttten how much I love Patti Smiths shaggy hairdo.
Thanks for posting that link Fruitful.

Missed you Goldenpig! It's been a long time. I see you have a new little one, he is absolutely divine and snuggly-looking! I just checked out your recent posts, saw you are expressing and watching your diet for allergens. I am amazed at how you must be juggling things, what a lucky bubba to have a mum do all that you do for him. And you are still fashion minded and looking great on top of it all!

Agnes, I just listened to the Patti Smith episode! Fascinating to hear what a white shirt meant to her, and the wistfulness of not being able to embody the image yet gaining so much from it. Again, the Salvation Army finds come up; the agency of being able to simply cut off cuffs to make it your own.

It makes me think, though, of how as a teenager (1988-1994) I often read teen magazines' suggestions to get things secondhand. I did, but I could never find the wonderful things they had in their pages, nor could I get things that fit my body nicely or were the right colour. Hearing of the thrifting ease of both Patti Smith and the author brought back that feeling of looking through a window but not being able to get in.

I wonder if a masculine aesthetic (and a figure that suits it) lends itself best to such ease with secondhand clothing, cutting it up and throwing it on. I certainly thought of our menswear-inspired members, especially Angie, in the latter part of the essay, talking about the particulars of the perfect white shirt.

I wonder which shop the author's favourite shirt was from? The BBC won't allow promotion which is probably why she didn't mention it.

I think I'm going to have to make some time to hear the rest of these essays. They have fed me! Even waking up the part of my brain that longs to use words like "intertextuality" (while the other part blushes at my pretentiousness).

I have listened to it twice now and will listen again, knowing I'll notice something new. It's a radio essay by Alexandra Shulman, on how the Leonard Cohen song "Suzanne" captured or inspired a fashion movement, how it affected her as a teenage girl, and how it still moves her. It raises questions about the meaning of thrifted, vintage or simply "secondhand" clothing, and about perceived individuality and conformity.

It is simply beautiful.

I chanced to hear it on the radio in Australia, but it was actually recorded a couple of years ago. I found some links but don't know if they work in various countries.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/e.....a_Shulman/

http://www.abc.net.au/radionat.....ss/4442540

I posted in bookclub, but this is audio, I figured it belongs here though! I would love it if someone else has heard this or will listen to it now and tell me what you think. As usual, nobody in real life would be as excited!
