I see cold shoulders everywhere in the stores... yet very little on women around me. This past spring in college where I teach, teens wore them - probably because that was what was sold at Forever 21 and Zara.
Always trying, I don't know in what part of the world you are so this may not apply, but where I am, we've had a very sh***y spring and rainy, colder than usual summer so far. I wonder if this has affected how trends have blossomed - or actually, not.

I am amazed by the explosion of the cold shoulder. It's so big that, when I mentioned trying one on, my husband said, "Oh, those are everywhere all of sudden." My husband! He's been wearing the same daily formula for a decade and notices nothing! I also think released/frayed/step hems are just going mainstream this season.

Denver may be more fashion-forward than I thought, though, because I've seen a lot of recent trends in the wild...kimonos are everywhere here, crops and ankle pants are ubiquitous, and I already told you about the cold shoulders.

Yes yes yes!! I feel that way too. Whether block heeled and cork wedge sandals are in or out I like them and always have. Same with striped tees and ankle pants.

The major trends I am seeing here that I feel are "new" are strong 80s looks with bomber jackets, high waisted jeans and tucked tees.

And the move away from grey to more earthy tones....

The cold-shoulder top is a perfect example : I bought one a year or so ago , not really registering whether it was some new trend or not, just thought it looked kind of cool. Figuratively speaking. I wore it twice, and then it disappeared into the laundry never to be worn again . Over the past year or so, it was a hot topic of conversation here on the forum, but I thought " oh who cares - they are everywhere ,I don't want any part of it". Then a few weeks ago, I was having a drink in my favourite neighbourhood restaurant and bar, and noticed a woman on a first date (that's the story I made up about her) wearing a cold shoulder blouse , jeans, and heels. It was so pretty, and she looked fresh and different. When I got home I pulled mine out of the closet , ironed it, and promptly wore it the next day. I liked it! It may be in every g*d**n store, but it's not on anyone I know or hang out with, and it feels, well, fresh and pretty. I'm not about to buy another one, but it reminded me to form my own opinion outside of what I'm seeing in stores, and to trust my initial instinct , which was to like it. Same happened with the bomber and the released hem jeans.

What Smittie said. I agree that Lisap is in the thick of fashion being in the industry and that many of us don't see a lot of the trends in the wild until they have filtered down to the lower price points. I was idly looking in a " young person's shop" 2-3 months ago in our autumn and some pretty soft peasant-style tops on sale caught my eye... until I pulled at one and saw they were all cold-shoulder, sigh. This would be cheap fast fashion. If they are at that level then everyone will be wearing them and they'll likely end up in the mountains of donated clothes/rubbish. I would have not been very likely to buy that stuff anyway as trying to reduce consumption and churn. But it's an example of this phenomenon.

Lisa p: You are right in the thick of fashion. I always feel slightly behind the times when you say, "I'm so over this" and I didn't even realize it was a thing.

The key to happiness with fashion seems to be not to pay too much attention, lol!

I too find it easier to adpot a trend when t's out in the wild.

We are so bombarded with visual fashion information , and in such a rapid and overwhelming manner, that it can seem old before it's even gained traction in real life. My favourite example is the bomber jacket and the released hem jean. Now i see them in stores and think : "really? you're just getting this in now? My first bomber jacket is now 3 years old! Same with the released hem jeans! " A lot of ideas are chucked out there to see what sticks, and if it does, it finally filters out across all channels. So yeah, any of us who follow the business of fashion and it's trends feel like we are seeing the same stuff over and over again. For me personally, it usually takes seeing a trend "out of context" for me to decide if I like it or not. As in , on a real person out in the real world, as opposed to crammed on some store rack.

Pom poms? Haven't really seen those. Interesting!

What I see are a variety of ideas not snowballing into trends... bombers, cold shoulders, pleated silky skirts, embroidered ornateness... all these things, but I don't think they qualify as trends. Crop trousers are pretty rare too in my real life.

Various cut outs on tops (not cold shoulder but others). And what about all the wide leg crops? Aren't those relatively new? I also seem to be seeing more tunic length tops but maybe they have just caught my attention more this year...

Newest look to catch my eye is cindysmith's artillery patina'd concept line. An actual fringe trend, but I hope to incorporate it soon. Probably combined with conservative tailored wear in my case, though I'll likely start with a very worn EF jacket I've undergrown.

That's all the fresh I need right now.

Mr Max expressed enthusiasm for sleek cold-shoulder tops, which I'm open to for loungewear. The right distressing could work happily.

It's an interesting question about what's happened to fashion trends. There just isn't anything 'sweeping the nation.' No babydoll dresses or dainty mules or palazzo pants or acid wash jeans. No Laura Ashley. No Chanel. No Rachel haircut. I think we live in interesting times. I think fashion is tied to sociopolitical climate when it comes to strong trends, and I think the times are about trying to hold onto what you've got. I'm thinking about Venezuela, for example, of what's happening now. Being a type 1 diabetic, I follow the diabetic news on Twitter. We're talking sending insulin to foreign countries and people looking to do bio manufacturing at home. Seriously. In other decades, I feel it was easier to predict what would be fresh and new. In this one, I don't think fresh and new is where it's at at all. Retro isn't even the right word. It's keeping what was now Now.

You have a really good point! Some seasons do seem to be like that. It's why the split-hem jeans at NAS interested me--it is the *one* new thing I think I've noticed for fall. I really like the version I got (not the Frame ones...they don't come in petite anyway) because (1) they're like bootcuts but don't hide shoes completely and (2) they are designed not to require the high heels that the previous run of bootcut style did.

That said...a low number of new trends can also mean that there's lower pressure to buy, buy, buy and that many styles we already have are lasting longer. I feel like that's a good thing. Well, unless someone really hates what's in style now...that wouldn't be so great. Fortunately, there are other choices than cold shoulders, which I'm not a huge fan of either.

Smittie, I'm with you on the high shaft booties. I've got a pair in stiletto heels but I have no occasion to wear heels anymore. I'd love to see some in lower heels at a moderately reasonable price point.

The step hem is one I like, and I'm definitely considering a wide leg crop. Beyond that, not much inspires me. I'm already sick of seeing all these shirts that have random ruffles across the chest&arms and bows on them and weird sleeves. I'm completely over the cold shoulder, never wanted one to begin with.

The only inspiration I've found lately is colors. I've shifted towards some softer colors lately, lots of pinks and blushes and even some deep berry tones; I've also gravitated towards lighter blues.

I'm hoping something comes along soon that makes my heart sing, but I'm not holding my breath.

I feel like I'm still getting up to speed on LAST year's trends!

Ummlila was sporting an oversized blazer the other day. Like, it's supposed to look a bit too big. That seems like a new trend.

I didn't think the step hem from last year would catch on, but it has, and I actually kind of like it now.

One trend I wish would take more of a foothold are high shaft booties, which work much better with cropped pants and skirts. There are still not many of these at lower prices.

"Cold shoulder" makes me shiver, lol!
I usually call them "sunburnt shoulder", 'cause that's what's happen if I wore one. Sunburn so bad it'd make me shiver.

I haven't seen anything new, and I think I'll croak if I see another cold-shouldered garment. Shopping for nice tops is more difficult thanks to that trend that seemingly isn't going away.

So far I have not seen one new trend that was not around in the spring/summer, or last fall/winter,,bell and big sleeves, cold shoulder, embroidery clothing and footwear, wide legs, crop wides, and others like kimonos and bombers that have been around a while. Slides (that I can not wear) seem to be abundant in flats and heeled ones, far fewer skinny heels and more block heels, but nothing new!!!!!!!
