i like how you break down the occasions, locations and seasons for coats. perhaps you could drill down some more so you could make a choice between the red metro coat or the andrew marc black funnel or both. both are in keeping with your style. i think you just have many fashion moods like all of us!

btw, i think you do need several coats. even if two (or more) coats fill the same niche. a girl wants choices!

K can shop I think you're right I need more than one coat. I guess I need to figure out how I will be dressing & where I will be going in each location & climate. I think this coat is good for LA or early fall & early spring in NY. Also fall/winter in Melbourne. I do run cold so I have worn shearling & faux fur in Melbourne & LA but without all the layers. I'm not sure if I would wear a leather jacket under a coat but Angie does. I know that a wool coat with just a sweater & t-shirt will not be warm enough for me if at times so I thought I could wear a leather jacket or wool blazer as well. I remember in January in NY I needed a silk thermal, a cashmere sweater, a polar fleece hoodie & a down puffer. My puffer was only hip length & my legs froze in jeans & boots. I think my puffer needs to be knee length.

Biscuits Mom why do you think they say that thinsulate is twice as warm as down? I think if that were true Canada Goose would be Canada Thinsulate. I don't see Alaskans running around in wool coats in winter either lol.

I would agree, you need more than one coat. That one is great, but for LA not NY. Thinsulate is ok for 40+ degrees, but cant compare to down, for deep winter temps, in my Minnesota born and bred opinion!

I think coat needs depend on your lifestyle needs and your wardrobe goals.

I'm a fan of coats, so I think everyone needs more than one coat. I have lots. Lots of wool coats of varying lengths. A few shorter coats. A dressy dressy coat. A puffer for really cold days. I've collected them over time. They fit my needs and goals, which does require functional, but doesn't require minimalism.

I think you probably need at least two coats, even if you are trying to be minimalist. If you wanted to be super disciplined minimalist and did not travel, then I could see restricting yourself to one coat. Since you travel, you need one coat (at least) for your primary climate (LA), and a second for colder places.

In your other thread, you posted pics with a leather jacket underneath. Would you wear that that often? I've lived in fairly cold areas, and I never wore anything as heavy as a wool coat over a leather jacket. Was the leather jacket just to approximate layers of sweaters and shirts? Or a leather blazer that you would wear?

If you can only buy one coat, do you feel like you otherwise have your bases covered for your home climate? Was this coat an impulse purchase that fits a fantasy of how you'd like to look for your home climate? Or is it a good coat for your local climate and you could actually use it? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm trying to get to the heart of why you are buying and what you want to express in what you buy. If there's one thing that I know, there's a coat out there for you, and the gals on this forum will find it for you if you need help!

I am allergic to down and only wear thinsulate...I live in MA rather close to the coast, so it can get rather cold here. I have some thinsulate coats from Land's End that are uber warm. I know that thinsulate "stadium" coats are super warm. Though I am not sure that a wool thinsulate coat would be warm enough for the dead of winter in NY - like the JCrew ones.

Maybe you could pose that question to the form....

Isabel do you know anything about thinsulate vs down? It claims to be twice as warm as down but folks on YLF say that a down coat is needed for the deep winter in places that snow.

I LOVE this coat. I agree with that it won't work so well with skirts or dresses. But this is definitely an LA coat. And I think that no matter what your style or coat preference, it it hard to get by in NY without a puffer, period.

I've added pics with collar undone different ways. I guess it wont do for colder places or dresses. I live in LA & it could be my LA coat with jeans or NY in the fall. Traveling requires minimalism so I only like to take one raincoat & one warm coat. Depending on time of year that could be a puffer or wool.

Well, I am biased since I live in outerwear-necessary location about 7 months out of the year. I like to have a coat "capsule". With that said, how cold and for how long is it where you are ?

I LOVE the coat in this post and it seems to fit your style ( from you describe ) more than the other coats. But how warm is this one and if it gets windy, the bottom part doesn't button. I say you need one really practical coat first.

I just bought this yesterday. Pics on me later. Am I all over the place? Not being from a place where we need coats a lot I feel coat ignorant. I also have many style personas & fell in love with this coat while shopping even though I originally wanted a knee length single breasted coat so that it would keep me warmer & look better undone. If it is cold enough to wear a coat I wouldn't want it undone. Also this one feels too snug with a leather jacket underneath. I tried a size 10 & managed with the layers but it didn't look as good a fit as the 8. I usually wear a 6. In J Crew coats I am 4 but 6 to fit all the layers. I rarely wear dresses in the cold weather. It would only be for a special occasion, but I'm trying to dress up more since being on YLF. I used to wear jeans for date night. I guess I can't get away with just one coat, like I can't get away with just one pair of booties. There are different outfits & different weather conditions. In the winter or in cities away from my local area I dress more urban & less boho. I wouldn't say I lean towards urban warrior but I like the rock chick look. I like Kate Moss' style.

These are the other coats I was considering.
