JenniNZ, bronze and bright can both go with lots of other colors easily. I know they aren’t technically neutrals, but I don’t think you have to be too careful adding either of those colors to an outfit.

Another who likes the bright blue especially. And the floral pants!
As far as going into new colours, it has tended to be a wild-card thing for me. Prime example was my bright green summer sandals. Bought for love of them, did go well with some grey-green pants at the time and an ombré green/white top: but several years later fell in love with a top with the exact same bright green. Perfect! Now I only have the sandals and the top left.
I think I started the bronze love in a similar way, with just one item initially.

About the different navies—there may have been a time when matching perfectly was the thing to do, but looking at the color stories we see now, with so many “clusters” of colors (ie pink and orange together, or blues & greens, etc), I think slightly different navies look updated and cool.

Thanks, Joy. -- the burgundy velvet sounds like a wonderful find!

Navy does sf eel like a good summer neutral, Bijou, And I prefer pairing summery colours like orange or coral with navy rather than black. I was watching some "French woman style " video the other day and the presenter said "French women don't worry about matching shades of navy. They all go." True or not, I suppose if I can adopt that approach it will certainly make life easier!

As you are replacing your summer wardrobe, it makes perfect sense to me to chose navy as a summer dark neutral, even if you keep black as your winter dark neutral. Blues look sensational on you and the floral pants are a wonderful wardrobe addition.

I wear most colours and accept that whilst some colours are not great on me (such as black), I can still enjoy them. I like the quiet sophistication of black and like adding colourful accessories too. Scarves, shoes and bags are my weakness!

I accidentally added burgundy after not wearing it for years. I wanted some velvet for winter and am trying to buy used clothing. I found a top, skirt, pants, and jacket all in burgundy on consignment just before the holidays and was very happy wearing it. I am giving navy another try as it is so hard to find shades of it that go together. I have lost track as to how many very different shades I have, but I like it as a neutral for spring.

Thanks, Robin -- it IS confusing, isn't it?!??! I think those warm tones still look good, but different when the hair colour changes. For the cooler months, I think I like the idea of mixing camel and tan tones with grey. Sounds like that combo could an option for you, too....

I haven't really changed colors since going gray but I kind of think I need to. I don't think the tans and camels I have always liked look as good on me any more. Although I still have a warmer skin tone so I don't know. So confusing!

Thanks so much, Jenava. I like your comment about not always being flattered. I tend to think some things flatter in an obvious way -- that blue blouse is vivid and pops with my skin -- kind of an overt flattery, I guess. But some colours (the right shade of grey, for example) flatter me in a in a more muted way, and sometimes that's the level of flattery I'm after. And sometimes, I want exactly the effect of just a plain black tee with a pair of jeans. No exactly flattering, but creates the impression I want at that time.

I fully support this direction and agree with everyone else those floral pants are beautiful and beautiful on you.

I like the shape of the tops.

Personally, I've slowly gotten almost completely out of black in my closet. I think after so many years of it I got bored with it, honestly. I know it's not my best color. I think I have 8 black garments, total, 4 of them are eveningwear. I think for me, black is more interesting when it's dressy. I certainly haven't stuck to my best colors in my clothes; I like to play with many colors. But it's pretty clear to me the difference between colors that flatter me vs clash on me (I'm not so stuck on always being flattered by my clothes, though).

I like to think that once we learn to really appreciate ourselves we become more attracted to the colors and shapes that flatter us.

Blue suits you! Why not?

I love the cornflower blue top. That’s a colour I’d love to wear but blue (lighter blues in particular) really drain me.

I’m experimenting a bit with lilac and light purple (again not great colours on me, but sadly most colours are in that category). Nevertheless, I’m drawn to them at the moment and I’m a firm believer in not letting any aspect of fashion (colours included) boss me around.

Well first of all you look fantastic in blue - how fun to be discovering it now! Blue has always been a staple for me (once I graduated from all black all the time), but I have definitely gone through phases with introducing other colors - bright pink is one of my current favorites. I like the pullover in purple on you too!

Thanks so much Rachy and Stag!

Stag, the colours in those pants reminded me of your palette a bit with its mixed berry tones. There's even a slight peachy hue to the background. :-)

Rachy, I used to wear red from time to time and haven't really done so in years either. But the right red can be really magical. Maybe your relationship with red just needs this little break!

Thanks, Angie! In the poplin version I think I prefer the small to the xs. It still pulls a bit across the back but if I wind up losing a bit more weight this summer, I think t will become more comfortable.

In the 100% cotton version (the navy one), the medium actually feels most comfortable across the back at my current weight. No pulling when I reach. Given that the intent of that one in particular is comfort in the heat, I might stick to the larger size. So far I have only found it in M or XS, so I don't yet have an in-between option!

Thanks, Suz. I thought the same about the volume with the semi tuck, but in "try on" mode, I am not finding it to be a problem.

The way the semi-tuck works is actually one of the attractions for me. The weight of the button placket is usually my undoing in a tucked shirt and I feel like it just pokes out and stays poked out.

Since this doesn't have buttons all the way down, even the poplin drapes reasonably well - to an extent I THINK I can handle. The 100% cotton version is very light and falls quite softly

I won't really know, I suppose, until I commit to one of these shirts and take it for a spin in a real life application.

It's so interesting to think about the subtle, and not so subtle shifts our style makes as time changes our appearance.

Blues, whites and greys are soooo good on you, CarolS! Wave to Suz! Excellent match with your eyes, complexion, and hair.

#1 and #4 look the right size. Love them on you. Wear with white pants :)

#2 and #3 look like you need a size down. Loving the silhouette!

I love those floral pants so much! Outfit 4 has all my fave ingredients for a fab pattern mix -- happy floral, plus stripes! You look great in this!

Love the top in that size, whatever it is. I think the oversized nature of the top will make it work more easily untucked at various sizes (though medium might indeed be too much) but if it's too oversized it will be tougher to make it work semi-tucked. That sounds odd, because the semi-tuck reins some of the volume in, but it's just a hunch I have about the particular style and I'm assuming the poplin is quite crisp without a lot of drape, which also affects how it will fall on the body. Anyway -- totally worth experimenting a bit and stocking up on the size that works best if you love the shirt. It's not a style that will date. And it's really useful to have a shirt like that in hot weather for sun coverage.

I love the cornflower blue blouse -- it's pretty on you!

I am overall very cool toned so my core neutrals and colours didn't change when I went grey. But I did notice a few differences.

When my hair was dark blonde, I wore more taupe, oatmeal, and chocolate brown. That was partly because those colours were available. I still like them and could wear them, theoretically, but I'm not adding more to my closet and currently have no dark brown at all.

I stopped wearing gold jewellery or hardware for the most part.

Stopped wearing tortoiseshell eyeglass frames. (This was also true for my husband, but his eyes are dark brown, not blue as mine are, so he has found it a hard adjustment.)

As my hair greyed, I started wearing:

more white, silver, grey (always wore them, added more)

brighter versions of old favourites (which for me mainly means some brighter blues, ha!)

more true reds and blue reds (an ongoing goal -- I would like more in my closet, which currently includes a few "pops" of red)

more black and white patterns. (I rarely wear black but like it mixed with white quite a lot). More patterns that incorporate white or light grey, period.

I also like lilac and purples more on myself, but don't have many items in my closet. I often consider adding more but many veer a bit sweet on me.

Another colour I would like to add more of is green. I currently have almost none, but some sage greens would be most welcome.

I tried to add more pink, but discovered that I just won't wear it as a solid unless we're talking about fuchsia, which I'll gladly wear. A pale pink flatters me but I never, ever reach for it.

cat 2 -- I have always gravitated toward brown eyeglass frames, and am still getting used to the fact that the dark brown or tortoise that I used to love doesn't work quite the same way now that my hair has changed! I am not ready to give up camel yet, though -- I yearned for those tones for years when my hair still had golden brown in its colouring, and NOW they're available when I've let the grey come in!
