cheers Lauren You know what, I may post another pic again tomorrow cos I just looked at myself in the mirror when my shoulders are back and I have good posture, and I am transformed-lol. My tummy almost disappears. I do tend to slouch, which adds weight of course.

you all rock! thanks x

Lucy, sorry I didn't mention this the first time, but YOU are awesome! Kudo's for posting pic's and asking for a little advice about what clothes to be looking for. For what it's worth, the discussion about body types is just a guideline to help us pick clothing that accentuates our natural shape. Having a guideline can save time so you're not trying on everything under the sun to find a great outfit. There isn't a "problem with your stomach" or with any part of you! The fun of fashion, in my opinion, is rocking who you are and feeling great in what you wear. So go forth with that in mind. I like the jeans you're wearing in the pics and agree with Jaime's comment about you rocking the sleeveless look.

Hello Lucy
just wanted to quickly chime in to tell you that I think that you have fantastic arms! I would be so thrilled if mine were as thin as yours are. (Arms are by far my worst part...even when I an underweight mine do not look good.) You really rock the sleeveless look and would probably look terrific in a dress.

Thanks Anne and Lauren- Lauren, I do lose weight off my boobs as well. I am currently a 34c. I do see hourglass in me though. The stomach thing is weird...I never saw a problem with my stomach before. I was always so obsessed by my bigger lower half. Gosh, hopefully getting my fashion sense sorted out will help me come to terms with my body. It is functional, I am healthy, I need to be more accepting of myself. I'm 40 in 4 years and now is the time to start liking myself more!

Hi, Lucy! Haven't posted here in a while, but I'm glad to be back. Everyone's replies so far have great imput for you and I'll give you my two-cents (I'm a personal shopper, BTW):

The body types mentioned (pear, apple, hourglass) are all general guides. Some people fit exactly and it's obvious, but most of us have some or all of each of these.

A true pear does have narrower shoulders than the hip & thigh. A true apple when gaining weight or losing, always comes and goes from the waist/midsection. An hourglass has same width in shoulders and hips, but usually has bigger bust and keeps weight on at the bust.

All this in mind, I would suggest that you are an hourglass with pear tendencies. When shopping for dresses, I think you should act like an hourglass. When shopping for bottoms, think pear because you'll want to accomodate your hips and thighs. I also recommend tops & dresses that have a slight empire waist; just above your belly button. This will show your shape and hide the slight apple tummy. I also suggest that for tops look for length that comes just up to the top of your hips, this also will show your curviness. Avoid tops that come to the widest part of your hips and pull - they will give you too much of a straight torso. Curviness is an asset!

The great thing about Angie & this site is celebrating all body types and people. Hope this helps.

Lucy, I think it is quite possible for some people to change body shapes with the weight gain and loss and also with childbearing and age.

When it comes to pear shapes I think there are at least a couple of different types.
1) the classic really narrow shoulders and wide hips - this is a matter of bone structure and I doesn't vary much with weight
2) with wider shoulders but still with a curvier bottom half - this is probably you (and me too)

Also with apple shapes, I think while some people are apple shapes however thin they get ( I know 2 people with thyroid related skinniness you are in this boat) many people with apple tendencies are those who would otherwise be something else but have put on weight/ stretched muscles (especially after kids)
So you may well look more like a pear if you lost weight if if would come off your stomach.

Sarah, I found a old post from you saying that before you lost weight you were more of an apple shape. Do you still think that was true?
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....replies=18

Anyway I wanted to reassure you that you don't look as bad as you think! Your picture in the dress thread was very pretty. Your legs look long and thin enough to emphasize. Your face is lovely.

I think some new jeans, dark wash without those horizontal marks on the legs would indeed be a good place to start.

Hope there will be some more recommendations for you soon.

Hi, Lucy! I have lost quite a bit of weight over the last two years, and while my body shape didn't completely change, I definitely favored the shapes differently. Before, I was very pear and now I'm hourglass with slight pear tendancies. It's different for every person though, but there may be slight differences.

I have to admit I am stunned by all the responses. All my life I have seen a pear. This is sad and says a lot about my negative body-image, but until last year, I thought there were inches in difference between my hips and shoulders. I looked in a mirror and really studied myself one day and saw they were basically the same width.

Ok, so a question. I am currently 20 lbs more than usual. When I lose weight, it will be come off my stomach and waist mostly, never my bum or thighs. I will then surely look like a pear? Can your weight affect your basic shape?

Also, my new problem is finding clothes for an apple with a pear bottom...lol. Apple advice says flaunt your slim legs (which I don't have) and pear advice says you should emphasize your slim upper half, which I also don't have. What is the best way to proceed so I can dress my body to make it look its best. For example, I thought these jeans were flattering on me, and looking at the picture now, they are a disaster. As I live in jeans, this is maybe a good place to start.

Thanks!

You posted pictures, Lucy! Well done! Congratulations :0)

You look slightly pear shaped, but not overly so. For the most part you’re apple shaped. So Khris and I have the same perception.

apple and pear doesn't seem fair. And I'm a poet! lol Apples have skinny legs...I have the legs of a pear. Sorry, just having a moan...lol. I used to definitely be just a pear I think before having kids- I had a flat stomach and smaller breasts. There is still a difference in sizes between my bottom and top- I currently wear a 12-14 on bottom and a medium or 10 on top. (this top I am wearing is something I had on underneath something else, which is why it is not fitting well.) Ok, off to find a way to dress this body- thanks for the feedback!

I would say an apple with hourglass tendencies. There is (as it seems to me) a fine line between hourglass and pear. But it appears that your shoulders and hips are roughly the same width.

I am pretty sure I am a pear, but my shoulders and hips are a similar width and I carry weight on top as well as bottom. I am more than I want to weigh, but my body resists losing weight like crazy! I'd like to look nice at the weight I am, but being unhappy with my figure I tend to stay away from nice clothes. Anyway, this is a good first step. Here is me: sorry my top is so skew-whiff!
