Thank you for the hug, Angie I think I needed it!

I am ok with being behind the curve, I guess. I have seen progress since joining YLF and that is the important part. Will I ever be as fashion forward or daring as others? Nope. Not in my nature. But I should give myself credit (like many others on this thread) for trying new things and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I've grown to like things I never thought I would - all as a result of YLF. Sheesh, without Angie and the forum, I would still be wearing my old uniform of black pants, black shoes + patterned top. Boring!

Thanks to everyone for chiming in, making me feel better and sharing your experiences, too.

I have to mull things over for awhile...I don't like to waste my money. If I jump in too early, the latest trend will sit waiting until I gain confidence that it will get worn enough to warrant the price tag. I don't have anything distressed yet and I still love booties:) i better love bottles, I have 4 pair!

For me to adopt anything, I have to like it. There are some trends that I like on others but know that they aren't right for me. And of course there are some that I really don't like on anyone! I like fun, fashion sneakers a lot but I will never wear sneakers/trainers (the bulky ones that look like true sports gear) as a regular shoe.

I LOVE booties and doubt I will ever give them up. I do get that a certain toe shape or heel style might be most current but to declare a whole category of footwear as out of style or dated- when there are so many options within that category- just seems silly to me.

I definitely think it's ok to be behind the curve, and I was, for a long time, I think because I'm really careful with money (well, at least, clothing was a last priority in a long list). I was really risk-averse because I knew I'd have to wear the clothing for a long time.

Now that I've adopted a few more stylish, for-me-cutting-edge clothing items, I feel more confident out in the world, so I think I'll continue to try to get in a bit earlier on the trends. I really have to force myself to keep an open mind because, you know, wearing cropped tops doesn't come naturally at first!

Oh, abc I am so sorry but I am totally laughing over here!! You see back in the 90's I found my beloved long jackets, despite pickings being thin I've continued to wear that silhouette despite various comments about "being stuck in a decade" You see I like what I like and I wear what I like albeit in updated ways. Now I finally see long jackets are coming back, a few last year, many more this year!! I adore boots and booties - I honestly don't wear "shoes" so same deal. I'll be scooping up every fab pair I can find so that they last me! So don't feel badly!! Enjoy what you love in whatever time sequence works for you and if you feel like you're "out of step" then you can come sit on the bench by me!!

Oh yes, I am a slow adopter. I finally get on board with a trend and then wonder how long it will last!

I bought two pairs of heeled sandals with an ankle strap the other day; I think those have been around for at least two years. I actually liked them from the start but just never bought any.

I also bought my first pair of mules, a type of shoe that I have been seeing on YLFers for at least a year. I hated those at first...it took me awhile to warm up to them.

And I just bought a pair of ballet flats too. I've been wearing them a lot. I don't think that ballet flats will ever go completely out of style, since they're just too darn practical.

Anna, yes -- agreed, some super stylish hip people can find a way to make socks work with loafers, etc.

But for me, personally, that won't work.

1. I'm not super stylish and hip.

2. I'm not able to keep those kinds of shoes on my feet in any case. They do not stay on me any better than ballet flats do.

3. It's too cold in my winters to wear socks with that type of shoe. You really need proper boots if you are outdoors at all for at least 4 months a year. Maybe more. Even booties are too lightweight/ not protective enough. (My booties become my "indoor" shoes in winter).

But, by all means -- let those who can play with socks and loafers have at it. I will enjoy watching from the sidelines and snorting at seasonal confusion. While recognizing (of course) that one person's "winter" might be another person's mild autumn. ;)

End of thread jack, and apologies, ABC.

I think anything goes. I wish I had adopted soft jogger style pants much earlier as they are so comfortable. I wish I never adopted boxy tunics about 1998 as they made me look like - a box. I have never really worn ballet flats but I have adopted ankle boots and never want to give them up.

In a recent thread Annagybe mentioned that photos represent a moment in time, and I liked that. I won't mind looking back at my photos from 2015 in ankle boots, blazers and skinny jeans and saying,"OMG, that is sooooooo 2000 and tweeny!".

Abc, I hope you had some red yourself! I'm reading this post in the morning and I'm laughing!

Why should you care if you're a late adopter, darling???? If it makes you feel any better, here goes....

1) I'm yet to BUY my first pair of booties. I've never had them! I've always worn boots that are mid calf length or end just below the knees, in winters. But I'm DYING to buy some cool leather ankle length boots

2) I own and wear ALOT of ballet flats. I don't think they ever go out of style, sweetheart. They're a classic! When I need a covered toe look and comfy shoes, ballet flats it is!

I still do not own ANYTHING distressed. I still DO NOT own BF jeans. Feeling any better? I hope you are!

Thankfully I DO OWN a moto jacket and a leather jacket, or I'd be seriously weeping because those are things everyone on the forum loves and raves about!

Laughing with Carter...that's how I felt recently when wide legs and flares started showing up again. I was ahead of the curve, just from being so far behind!!!

Winter is nearly over here and I have just bought 3 (yes 3!) pairs of booties on super discount which I plan to wear next Winter. I don't care if they're out! In my wardrobe I also have motos, knee highs, mid calf and OTT boots. Some I've had for years and I still wear them. I read Aus and UK Vogue and In Style and now YLF, and it seems that pretty much anything goes, it's just how you style it....like Angie said, just enough fashion. (I love that comment!)

Some trends I will never adopt for all sorts of silly reasons. Brogues remind me of slippers that someone like Hugh Heffner would wear and lace-ups remind me of school shoes I was forced to wear for 12 years of my life! Lol. They look fab on others but on me?...nope.

I am so far behind, I prefer to think of myself as ahead of the item's revival;-). I bought my first pair of tall boots in 2013. My first pair of skinnies and very low rise anything also happened in 2013. My first booties were bought last year, but I ended up returning them when I had foot surgery. I have a NAS pair that I'm considering for this year.

Pre-YLF, I wore mid rise straight and bootcut jeans. I wore cropped/ankle pants. I wore long cardis. I wore mules (major surprise that these are back from Angie's recent post). I wore loafers and pointy-toe flats.

I did a WIW in light denim the other day and commented that they felt 70s to me. Angie said they were 90s instead. I totally missed them in the 90s. Does that make me 20 years ahead or 20 years behind???

Come here for a HUGE hug.

You are doing VERY WELL, abc. Remember that fashion unites us but style sets us apart. Personal Style is about wearing what's best for YOU, with just enough fashion. Some people amp up the fashion - others scale it back. This is a personal choice.

YES. I am a little tired of booties - hence I bought the Tims - but I WILL wear them. I have to. They are extremely practical and I have several pairs. But I'm going to have custom tall tailored riding boots made because I am sick of nothing fitting my 13 inch calves unless there is a stretch panel.

Ballet flats were always in style, btw.

Usually I am behind trends too, but sometimes I am accidentally forward. three years or so ago i saw a drapey front cardi in an off white. just had to have it. this was before YLF, but not seeing this worn I seldom wore it. Now sweaters like it are everywhere.

It is not so much a particular style like skinnies, or other clothing styles, that concerns me. we can all pick and choose what is our own style, wear what fits our lifestyle and bodies. What bothers me are the things like-the no socks, must show ankle or leg skin,,bare legs, outlawing pantynose, the part tuck bit, and other things. It is not so much the clothing or shoes or booties, but the way we are supposed to wear them-or not. What I wonder is who in the #$$$ decides these things.

We all need to decide how, individually, we want to wear something..wear socks with everything we want-even Birkenstalks if we want-wear shirttails out, our flares at the top of shoes instead of dragging the ground, etc.

What else is there for our climate, you mean, Lisa. I mean, honestly. What did we do before them.

Tall boots are super hard to fit (for me at least).

Snowboots are friggin' SNOW BOOTS. (Excuse my French. I have had a glass of red.)

I don't care how many blogs you star in, there are only so many cute outfits with SNOW BOOTS.

And loafers, pumps, sneakers, etc. -- You have to wear those babies without socks!! How in heck are we going to do that.

No, seriously, booties and moto boots and (the rare and expensive) knee high boot are my only options for one half of the year. I have to deal with it or move. I am so tempted to move.

I laugh at myself pretty much everyday :)

btw - I am totally sick of booties too, but what else is there? I think it's because there are only so many iterations of a thing, that they all seem to start looking alike.

I gave a pair of booties that I have not worn in two years to my step-daughter. I am now into oxfords and loafers.

Oh Anna, it wasn't anything you said!! Just a few things at once that really hit home - I am not on the leading edge of fashion. I am ok with it and can even laugh at myself about it a little. But it does kinda suck when I finally decide I like something only to find out its already on the way out fashion/trend wise.

Glad I am not alone

I hear ha. I love booties and just came to the party a bit ago. They are soooo great for my climate, though. I bought my first pair of moto boots, too.

Oh I'm constantly behind! As I'm talking about in NAS, I have just found my first pair of skinny fit...ridiculous! And it seems wearing them with tall boots is old news, when I never even got to try it!

Laughing along with you!

Booties. Even if I wanted to be over them, I couldn't. I don't know what people in my climate will do when they are truly out of style. I guess we'll all move.

I'm neither an early nor a late adopter. I used to be late (super late). Now, with Angie's help and the forum's, I'm much earlier on the curve. But there are some things I can't find in the precise iterations I like until a trend is almost gone.
