jenanded, I love hands-free crossbody bags, too, and have noticed that the strap, especially if it has a buckle or other interesting hardware, can actually be quite flattering to my thickening over-60 middle. I think the diagonal line across the body creates a waist-narrowing illusion (much like the zip of a moto jacket) especially if the bag itself is shaped and proportioned to suit your frame. For me, a classic 8" x 10" or smaller rectangle with discreet metal details works every time, so I have them in several colors--some more casual, some dressier. Some of them have tuckable or detachable straps and can be carried as clutches, another great feature. Shoulder bags always slip off my shoulder and give me neck & shoulder aches; crossbody bags feel secure, and the weight is better distributed. Try them on in front of mirrors for style and fit, and have the straps shortened if necessary to hit at the right spot, and you might find that you like what they do for your figure after all.

A wider strap cross-body seems like a stylish update. I admit I'm of the "fanny pack" crowd. I avoid the bulky gear ones that stick out like a shelf, instead normally pulling the straps of a cross-body tight and wearing it around the waist.

I have a crossbody with a top handle and a removable strap. I went through a brief period where I didn't use a crossbody, because of how is cuts across the chest and rubs buttons on jackets. I returned to it, however, because having both hands free is necessary for travel (and safer for security). Have you tried satchels with a long drop handle? Those are a good alternative.

I can't say enough good things about my Ameribag Healthy Back Bag that can either be worn on the shoulder or as a crossbody. It comes in various fabrics as well as in leather, and in various sizes:

I usually use my crossbody bags as shoulder bags too.
As much as I like the look of clutches and satchels e. g, for daily use I need bags that can go over my shoulder.

I like a crossbody with an adjustable strap so I can use it as a shoulder bag when the mood strikes. This MZ Wallace is my current weekend/sightseeing bag and it's easy to swap between crossbody and shoulder.

I confess - I have loved a cross body since I first started travelling when I was 17 so thrilled that they have been in fashion for a while. One of my fashion goals is to update my casual and travel wardrobe and I have been thinking for some time that a strap running across my soft 50 year old self is not so flattering even though I love the hands free element. I like to be hands free. Overall my style is modern classic. Oh I might add, that while I love cross body I dislike backpacks equally. What alternative might you suggest? What has worked for you? Thank you.
