I LOVE Blue Q but they are not foldable. You can just flatten. https://www.blueq.com/bags/

I do carry some in my purse like Janet posted and have those in every car. And yes, I still carry stuff in my hands too to avoid bags

I have canvas bags to haul groceries, library books and anything else I might want to tote. My favorite one is an oversize LL Bean type one, but from the college my son teaches at...momma pride! I keep a string market bag in my large purse too.

I use those carry alls from Thirty - One ? Is that what it’s called ) . Big rectangular box totes with handles . When 3 flights of stairs from car to condo front door are your reality , the few bags to carry the better . What am I stumped by however is how to dispose of cat litter in an environmentally friendly way . I use any plastic bags that do show up , but are there not such things as compostable litter / dog poo bags ?

I use thin reusable nylon bags similar to the ones Janet showed. They fold well and fit into small regular bags. Most of the grocery and similar shops I use regularly still give out bags if needed, however I try to really hard no to forget my nylon one. As already mentioned, I do well with pre-planned grocery trips, it's the little random stops on the way back from work o pick up milk or similar where I am trying to remember.

I’ve gotten to the point where I almost never forget reusable bags when going to the store. I always have at least one in my purse (they’re light and take up very little space), and I keep a few more in the little holder in the front door of my car, so it’s hard to miss them when I get out of the car. If I know I’m going to the grocery store that day, sometimes I’ll put a couple of those bags on the front passenger seat just so it’s that much harder to forget them. It’s just habit at this point. I also use them for various other purposes like carrying a change of clothes to Pilates, an impromptu beach combing session, carrying random items to my studio, etc. It seems the more I use them, the less likely I am to forget them.

Bonus: I got bags in prints and pattens that make me happy. I’ll sometimes even grab one that goes with my outfit. And my sister gave me two bags that have dog prints on them. I’ve gotten compliments on them and they’re good conversation starters.

My solution is to accidentally leave the bags in the car and have to run back out to get them. Or I divide them up between the two cars and proceed to leave them in the garage. I have a stash of fabric bags that I made, and when I wash them they get left in the basement. LOL. Seems like I’m always paying for paper bags. As you can see, I need a different solution! I’ve got a personal shopping bag crisis going on.

I keep a few canvas tote bags hanging on the back of my front door, so I don't forget them (I'm sure you've seen them make a few cameos in my WIW posts lol). But then again, I only have to pop downstairs for groceries (usually not even outside, unless for our monthly department store visit)... I feel no shame in clipping them to my belt bag when on the way to the shops, lol!

For those of you who drive/ do bigger grocery hauls, I've heard good things about the Hulken bags on wheels (apologies for the long link, was recommended by WO2 blog):
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W.....s_li_ss_tl

My question is what you do for throwing out rubbish now? We no longer have a stash like we used to (because of the reusable bags), so is there some suitable alternative (for holding wet, stinky food & non-food refuse in a subtropical, humid climate) of which I'm unaware?

This is similar to your recent post on what else if not jeans. I can’t answer either question, because jeans and plastic bags rarely enter my equations. To say what I “substitute” for jeans, I guess I’d have to know what activities you mean, and I could see what I’m wearing then. I had a couple of thin fabric bags I used for 500 m grocery runs in Berlin, but mostly I did what I’m doing now for the .75 mi to the grocery here—just using whatever bag I was carrying anyway, and sticking a few items in with my other stuff.

I’m pretty proud of my bags. I got 14 linen tea towels with retro designs from my MIL when she moved to assisted living. They date back to the 50# and 50s. Most were sent to her as gifts from relatives in Ireland.

I made them into tote bags with linings and handles made from coordinating prints, and used up many yards of inventory fabric, otherwise known as stash. I love the prints and colors, and they feel so nice, sturdy but soft and drape. They work perfectly for groceries, library books, general shopping, art group, and picnics.

If I forget to take them into the grocery store or don’t take enough, I just put the larger items unbagged into the cart and put them into bags or baskets when I get to the car.

For groceries, we use the insulated Trader Joe's bags as well as the coated ones they sell including the one divided for wine. I use LePliage that zips in the middle for my Nordstrom returns, and a small nylon bag that fits in a tiny pouch for my weekly library book/dvd/audio book pick-ups and returns. My husband's aunt in Las Vegas saves her large paper bags for us since we use use them to line our kitchen trash receptacle. At a usage rate of one per week, we are set for years!

These live in our cars when not in use.

Little non-grocery things like clothes shopping, pharmacy, etc go in these. I keep them in my purse/car. They fold into a little attached pocket. https://www.amazon.com/ChicoBa....._id=373786

I'm on Team Hodgepodge, a mix of canvas totes, packable nylon bags, and reusable freebies (the flimsy synthetic ones that fold flat, open up into a cube shape, and disintegrate if you leave them out in the sun for too long ). There was a period of time when everybody -- conferences, festivals, banks, restaurants -- seemed to be handing out promotional reusable bags. They aren't classy, but I'm more or less set for grocery bags for the foreseeable future. I figure using what you already have is inherently lower-carbon than going out and buying a bunch of new bags, whether natural fiber or petroleum-based.

Yes, it is easier to remember for a big weekly shop but the short run-ins are harder for me. I need one of those ones that fold up small to keep in my car.

I remember when we were in Amsterdam the grocery store we went to didn't have bags - we were surprised and not prepared. Still think it is a great idea though.

This folds up very small, holds a lot. A LOT, and has a bit of padding in the strap. I’ve had a fuchsia one for years

For big shops I use the bags that are really boxes with straps. They fold up nicely and are really easy to pack in the line up. I have a collection of canvas and cotton bags too that I keep handy ... And a few old stray plastic bags from the olden days that I keep reusing!

As for remembering, I think that's just time and habit, for me at least ... I used to forget all the time and now I rarely do. When I do though, everything goes in the grocery cart and I just put it loose in the trunk ... Or if that's not feasible I will buy an reusable bag for items that truly can't be left loose.

I have a Le Pliage but rarely use it for shopping. (I do bring it as an extra when travelling). My solution is nylon (or similar) foldable-into-pocket bags that pop into my regular bag or crossbody. Similar to Irina's. I have many of them and they wear like iron, go in the washer, weigh almost nothing.

I use reusable nylon bags like these from Loqi. I love them and use them for everything -- grocery shopping, clothes shopping, etc. They fold down to almost nothing and stuff in a little zip pocket. There is always one in my handbag and at least a half dozen in my car for big grocery shops. They're also great on road trips for all kinds of random uses -- dirty laundry, carrying home souvenirs, etc. They wash great and last for YEARS. I rarely ever use a store plastic bag anymore.

My solution is exactly like yours. Two large canvas bags that I keep on the car (for the supermarket, the greengrocer etc.) and a smaller nylon shopping bag (similar to Irina's one) in my purse for unexpected purchases when I am out and about. I am very sensitive to the plastic problem.

Yes, I used foldable, thin fabric bags. They don’t take much space in my crossbody bags. See the picture below, it folds into a small pocket. I have it in a different color and would buy more if I see them

In the summer I often use cotton shoppers as everyday bags, I keep phone and a wallet in a pouch and put in a shopper.

In a car we keep plastic bins for groceries and a couple of large bags just in case. Those are blue IKEA bags.

I don’t know how things are where you live, but since plastic bags have become a no-no in Canada, most stores don’t provide checkout bags anymore! https://www.canada.ca/en/envir.....n-on-certa. A few stores use paper bags, and larger chains have reusable bags that they will sell you, but no more ‘free’ plastic bags.

30+ years ago, DH and I bought 4 giant canvas totes from LLBean to use as grocery bags. We still have them and use them weekly. With the advance notice of legislative changes, and with concern over pollution and climate issues, I started using reusable bags as much as possible. I have a hodge podge of quilted homemade cloth bags, the heavy duty plastic bags Lululemon has been giving out for years, and similar bags handed out as loot bags at race events.

I’ve divided up the bags between the cars and try to remember to bring one with me when I go into a shop. Grocery shopping is easier, because it’s a big production and a chore DH and I share at a regular weekly time slot. Once all the bags have ended up in the house, I divide them up again, and put them in the cars.

I don’t have a perfect record of remembering a bag. The reusable ones don’t fold down to fit in my purses/cross bodies. Sometimes I leave a shop holding the items I’ve purchased in my hands, or if they are small enough, I pop them in my purse. I make sure to keep the receipt so that I’m not challenged as a shoplifter.

I read about an uptick in the popularity of LePliage totes (copied from an article featured in the January Fashion Round-up Inge put together https://www.theguardian.com/bu.....n-items-of) and I’m wondering if it has to do with the search for a stylish shopping bag? The traditional Lepliage does fold down to a compact package, is light weight, and can hold a lot of stuff! https://www.nssmag.com/en/fash.....-le-pliage

What about you? What is your (shopping) bag solution these days?
